Yunmingi- A place high up in the mountains, a place isolated from the rest of the world.

(Nah kidding, apparently u can walk down to take a bus to the nearby small town for your city needs.)

But up in the mountains, you are not supposed to be living like how u live in the city like Taipei. Though it has a very modern toilet (self warming toilet seats are a godsend in this cold weather!) TV reception are disrupted when u walk too near the antenna. No mini fridge, no safe. Hot water is communal.

But. And it's a very big but.

You get to see the amazing view here.

U are awoken in the morning by birds chirping like Disney movies, hell u even hear a rooster crow in the morning.

It's first light here at almost 530,u will go by a farmer's schedule because such is the call of nature here. It gets dark here ard 7ish. You will remember how good it feels to wake up early n sleep early.

The view here is spectacular. I managed to capture a sea of cloud here as I arrived but that totally depends on your luck as I dint see any for the rest of my 2 days there.

Sakura flowers.

Cherry blossoms.

I went to alishan for the Sakura experience but turns out I saw the most beautiful Sakura trees nearby the bnb.

The most important and captivating factor is here is the owner, Mr liu. He's like the Asian uncle you have, making sure u are warm and has his own house rules. We are after all staying under another person's roof. I had the chance to chat with him as I return back from alishan and he invited me for a drink. In the end, the whole family joined in and it was a warm n less cold night up in the mountains.

Its one thing to stay at a place, it's another to stay under another person's roof. And i left the place, knowing I met another friend in another part of the world, up in the cold cold mountains of Taiwan.

The host was a very friendly and helpful man. He picked us up from Fenchihu bus stop a little after 3:00 p.m. He also gave us a tea-making demonstration after dinner. Their tea was so excellent that we decided to buy one can of their High Mountain Tea. We felt assured that we were buying directly from the source. We stayed in one of their traditional wooden room and it was clean and cozy. The bathroom even had the Japanese-style bidet with heated toilet seat. Loved it!
We had to walk a short distance from the old building to the new building. It was a nice walk with breathtaking views of rows and rows of tea plants.
The B&B was very close to the Sunset trail and we walked on the trail just before sunset and witnessed the sun coming out from behind the clouds. That itself was worth the trip to Shizhao.
It was a little bit cold in the room at night but it was not a big deal for us. The complimentary breakfast the following morning was good.
We were also dropped off (for free) at Shizhao bus stop upon check-out for our trip up to Alishan.
We were glad we stayed one night at a tea plantation. It was a very tranquil and relaxing experience. The beauty of the place was a soothing balm on our souls.

Stayed for 2 nights at the new wing of this B&B located a few hundred meters from the old one in the middle of its own tea plantation on top of the hill overlooking Shizao village. The views are fabulous, whether it is the sunset views or the sunrise with the sea of clouds. You feel in heaven. The building is new, equipped with all top notch facilities, wifi, cable TV with international channels spacious bright rooms with comfortable beds. We initially booked a room for 3 persons but were upgraded to a family room. All rooms come with balconies overlooking the valley and surrounded by tea plantations. Breakfast and dinner were very fresh with lots of seasonal fresh veggies. The owner and his family all speak English making it easy to communicate. There are several beautiful trails through the cherry blossom trees and the tea plantations starting right outside the compound of the B&B. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy the splendors of Alishan in one of the most serene and peaceful settings that can be found.

Very good views. Big clean rooms in their new 5-storey building. Good breakfast included. Many rules which they convey to guests in a matter-of-fact-tone. This hotel is VERY expensive for this area and it disappoints because of lacklustre service.

They have a rule that one should not bathe after 10pm, which may irritate some but for us it was an acceptable rule.
When we arrived at 8pm, my room did not have the sofa-beds made up although this was communicated to them many time prior to arrival (and we also paid for the extra sofa beds).
Also, there is NO room heating. Rather their mattress are heated (you need to learn how to operate the mattress heater). One of our sofa-beds and my relative room's sofa bed did NOT have a heater attached. We had to ask ( it was not offered) for extra blanket to resolve that). Bathroom has separate heater that you operate (but which they ask you to not use if you are not in bathroom).

Environment maybe not suitable for families with young children. As a family with young kids, we travel 2 to 3 times a year in the last 6 yrs and this is first time we were told to keep quiet at 8pm. While I do appreciate that this is mountainous area and people sleep early, I do think 8pm is pushing it. By the way, my toddler was NOT running in the corridors nor screaming at the top of her lungs. We had just returned to the hotel at 730pm and went straight to our rooms to bathe? Staff generally OK but not the usual kid-friendly attitudes that one usually gets in this part of Taiwan. This experience unfortunately spoiled my 2 night stay here. I would say, adults only guests would probably enjoy this place but perhaps they should tell all guests at point of booking what their rules are.

This B&B is located in a tea plantation, so you can imagine the beautiful views up on the hill among the tea terraces. There are actually 2 blocks of accommodation - the newer one a more modern-looking multi-storey(doesn't blend with its surrounding) block situated further in whilst the original, older block (single-storey) was where the owners live. We stayed in the latter and love the wood-themed rooms with quaint decor. The bathroom is equipped with modern fittings from rain shower to electronic toilet bowl to air dryer. Heater is provided as it gets pretty cold at night. There is free wifi as well.

The B&B may be rather difficult to find on your own - we took the forest train from Chiayi to Fenqihu town, stored our luggage at the train station, explored the town and had lunch before calling the owner to fetch us. The staff at Yunmingi were absolutely friendly and helpful, explaining to us about the tea industry and also advising us on the things to do and see in Alishan Park. They also helped us hire a driver for the following day's trip to catch the sunrise and to tour the park (quite a distance away) .

The views from the tea plantation is amazing - you can also catch the sunset from the top floor of the new building, a short walk from the old block. Watching the clouds rolling in among the hills is truly an unforgettable experience. Do try to wake up early in the morning to catch the sunrise as well and breath in the fresh, cool air.

Breakfast comes in a simple set with unlimited refills of bread, porridge and hot drinks and is served in the new block. For dinner, you can try their hotpot for NTD400 per head or they can drive you to the nearby Shizhuo town to try the local food (specialty : chicken fried in tea oil).

We enjoyed our stay in Alishan Yunmingi and highly recommend this beautiful b&b.

My friend and I stayed at Alishan Yunmingi for one night and it was an amazing experience but with some cons. The B&B is quite modern and a great place to stay but very far from the Alishan National Park!

Pros:
- Staff members were friendly and welcoming
- The room was huge with an enchanting view of the mountains, clouds and tea terraces.
- The bathroom was spacious and most amenities were provided.
- Free wi-fi available in the rooms
- Free car pick up service from Shizhou bus station
- A small rooftop on the top floor to take a look at the breathtaking views

Cons:
- The location of the B&B is quite far from the National Park. We took a bus from Chiayi HSR to Alishan National Park and had to get off at Shizhou and then call the hotel from the Hi Cafe to pick us up. It's a 20-minute ride from the Shizhou bus station to the hotel.
- Breakfast does not have too many options and especially limited for vegetarians!
- If you would like to watch the sunrise from the Alishan National Park, the hotel does not provide free pick-up service in the early mornings and the only way out is to order a taxi which would cost NTD600 per person no matter even if you all can fit in one taxi.

They pick me up from the Fenchihu bus station and explain about the room breakfast and necessary information. I was staying at the traditional house which is the same as owner family staying. They do have new hotel with modern style as well.

The room is big enough for solo traveler. Unfortunately the weather didn't give me the chance for sunrise or sunset. But I have a chance to see the cloud sea.

The breakfast is great with different dishes in each day. I bought the Oolong cha tea from them and the owner say good bye and thanks you to me personally.

I will stay there again if I happen to go Alishan.

A beautiful family-owned hotel surrounded by tea trees. I was lucky during my 2n stay and was wowed by cloud cascades (云瀑) and glass lights (琉璃光). The owners are very friendly and would fetch you from fenqihu when you arrive by bus, and send you down to shizuo to catch the bus back to Chiayi. The highland oolong tea leaves the hotel produces is very fragrant and is a must-buy. Excellent breakfast selection and hotpot dinner.

How to get here : We opted to take the Alishan Scenic Train from Chiayi Train Station to Fenchihu (last stop 1400m above sea level) an ascent of through scenic landscape, valley and numerous mountainous tunnels. The ride lasted 2 hours and a half. There is a running commentary in both Mandarin and English. There is another transport option - the local public bus.
At Fenchihu, we stored our luggage at the train station locker for a fee of NTD 50/ 3 hours. This is a town surrounded by hills on 3 sides. There is also a train museum nearby. Since our free shuttle is only available at 3 pm, we had lunch at a quaint restaurant (up a flight of stairs) the famous bento set, the local mee sua, a dish of bamboo shoot and also beancurd with freshly grated wasabi. After lunch we walked through the old street, the square Bamboo forest and also the cedar Forest trails.
At 3 pm we called the B&B, transport arrived in approx 15 minutes. The ride up to the B&B in Shizuo took about 15 minutes.
Location : surrounded by tea plantations. Fantastic view of the Alishan mountain ranges. Fortunate to be able to see the clouds rolling in ie sea of clouds just as the sun was setting. There is also a timber walkway that cuts through the tea plantation below - the sunset trail. There are a few hiking trails here.

Room : we opted to stay at the traditional quarters. It is a single storey timber building tastefully decorated with modern bathroom. Strong water pressure. Comfortable beds. Water dispenser available outside the room. There is also a covered sitting area right outside with timber sofa and settee. About 20 feet away there is another covered sitting area with an open platform next to it for viewing.

There is another modern 5 storey building with lift about 5 mins walk away which is the new addition to this B & B. Very modern and tastefully furnished with a viewing rooftop. One apparently can catch both the sunrise and sunset here form different vantage points.

Restaurant : located at the ground floor of this modern building. Since this place is quite isolated they cater for steamboat dinner. Although a little pricey at NTD400 per pax it was a sumptuous and satisfying meal. We ordered 3 sets for 4 of us. It was more than sufficient. After dinner we were served fragrant Alishan mountain tea produced locally.
In the morning there is a generous spread of Taiwanese buffet breakfast.

Staff : Effective communication via email in fluent English. Staff and host very friendly and welcoming.

Free Shuttle : Upon checkout we were dropped off at Shizuo bus stop opposite Hi Life Convenience store to catch the bus down to Chiayi train station. Prior arrangement made with staff.

This is probably the best part of our 10 day Taiwan trip. Cool weather. Lovely sceneries of mountain ranges and valleys, rolling tea plantations and floating clouds. Sunset and sunrise. Good food and warm fragrant Oolong tea. Surrounded by flora esp orchids and fauna. One with nature truly relaxing!

We are a family with adult children coming to Fenchihu for the first time.

Pros -
Impeccably clean (linen, towels, room environment)
Very well maintained considering the homestay is 3 years old
The entire area is exclusively for guest use and therefore, very tranquil and relaxing
Situated within the owner's tea farm (views of the tea farm with mountainous terrain is spectacular)
Knowledgable staff who gave us a good session on tea produced by their own tea farm

Cons - Location is on a far end of Shizhuo which means you're not walking distance from almost anywhere (but the homestay compensates with a pick up service from your arrival and a drop off service to Shizhuo to catch a bus to your next destination).

I suggest that you could call the B&B. I had a rental car. It would not surprise me if they picked you up from Fencihu, it's only a few minutes away by car.

I had a rental car and didn't want to wake up that early. I think if you ask at the front desk, they can probably arrange it for you.
