There’s a kind of strange twist in rating a hotel stay in Taiwan. In the 7 times I’ve visited the country since 2012 (9 hotels across 4 cities/regions) never have I encountered what qualifies as “poor service” as in so many other cities around the globe; on the contrary, the staff are often so friendly and polite to the point of rendering everything else – e.g. poor plumbing, odd odors emanating from the room, and sometimes a difficult time communicating directions - a forgettable memory. (The same can be said of the populace – a big part of the reason why I frequent the Formosa so often)
Since the quality of service is, for me, what determines the experience, I have found it hard to give an objective review and have refrained from attempting to do so thus far. However, I think I may just have found my new favorite place to stay the next time we visit (and there *will* be a next time!)
As part of a planned trip to Taiwan to celebrate a date of quarter-centennial significance with my partner, I made several email enquiries in advance to seek advice on which type of room to book, as I wanted to plan a surprise for her. While there was some confusion at first – most staff are more comfortable communicating in Chinese – I eventually received advice to book an executive suite, and clarification on how the check-in process worked. (It’s quite simple – the staff will provide you with a document you need to stamp nearby, on the NTU campus, and return to the front desk before checking out. No need to worry about doing anything prior to check-in, as the staff will take care of this once you arrive.)
Once I had made my reservation, I proceeded to ask about help in decorating the suite for our anniversary. I was promptly contacted by Ms Ariel Zhuang, whose enthusiasm and friendliness jumped off the virtual page. She not only agreed to help me with my planned decorations, but made further suggestions and sent me links to show exactly what everything would look like/cost, providing complete clarity and comfort of mind.
We enjoyed the first week of our trip, in spite of a stay at a very well-reviewed hotel with the three problems mentioned in the first paragraph (although it would be unfair to compare chains, as the budget and target clientele are different); arriving at the hotel on the second-last day of our stay a little bit earlier than the check-in time ( approximately 2pm to the hotel’s stated check-in time of 3pm). As expected, the room was not yet ready – I was in no hurry to rush them, given my planned surprise . However, the staff gave us a very warm welcome, outfitted us with bottles of water and maps of the surrounding area, and proceeded to give us recommendations on where to grab a quick bite to eat around the area. After doing a quick tour, we came back about an hour later and checked in.
The suite itself was perfect. It was split into two floors – the lower consisting of a spacious living room area with a large sofa (sorry, make that two). Both the living room and bathroom on this floor had ceiling-to-floor glass views of the city – the NTU campus and the Taipei 101 in the distance. The second floor was more like a bedroom loft with a gigantic bed and bathroom with tub of to the side. It came equipped with a television facing the bed, perfect for watching TV after a night’s worth of snacking on night market food.
I had made several special requests, mostly to do with decoration – these had all been seen to beautifully. Planning a surprise can take a lot of effort – and it’s worth it or not in those few seconds one walks in the door. It was more than worth it here – and I have to thank the staff for their attention to detail and care.
The next morning, we made our way down to breakfast at the in-house restaurant, Just Italian. There was a good selection. It might not have been on par with some of the more luxurious hotel buffets out there, but it was cozy, clean and quiet – more than sufficient for a relaxing breakfast.
Upon checking out, Rainee helped us with the process speedily, and gave us advice on where to go for a great steak experience that wouldn’t break the bank (Wang Ping), even going so far as to personally run out the door ( she was working the reception, not the entrance) to help us flag down a taxi. As I said at the beginning of the review, it makes it all that much better when you’re treated like a special guest, especially when you aren’t really (to be honest, we are just another couple staying for a night. But it sure was a special one.)
As for location, the hotel itself is about 10 minutes’ walk from the Gongguan MRT station, which can be quite a walk in the summertime. It is located just a few minutes away from the Gongguan night market, which is smaller and lesser-known, but no less characteristic of Taiwanese night markets in general – lots of cheap eats, many of them quality. There are also a number of proper restaurants close by - a hot-pot buffet, a beef noodle shoppe, and possibly the best numb-spice tofu with duck’s blood in the entire Taipei area ( ask the staff about “De Ji or 得記 ”) – rest assured you will not be left wanting for a good meal, only ruing the fact that your stomach isn’t large enough to fit more!
In conclusion, there was absolutely nothing to fault about this stay. Aside from a certain structural defect – the sink is designed so that a lot of space is wasted – and the fact that the ceiling would look a lot better with a brand new layer of paint, I found the first time I’ve stayed at a Just Sleep property to be one of the best, in Taiwan or in any other place across the globe. They are the epitome of friendliness and helpfulness, and while they may not be dressed in the finest suits or offer the grandest suites, they will do all they can to make your stay memorable – as it was for me.
From the start, because we arranged airport car pickup (expensive at 2000NTD vs local car services at 1000NTD), the hotel emailed me the name and number of the driver that would be coming to pick us up and even called the driver while we were in the car to confirm arrival time.
Once we arrived, Marc from the front desk came out to help us with our bags and took us straight up to our rooms to check us in there as we were exhausted and had an even more exhausted baby with us after back to back long-haul flights. We were touched by his caring and thoughtfulness. He was very prepared with all the info that we would need for the first night and it made it so much easier for us to have in-room checkin instead of waiting downstairs in the lobby to checkin.
The room was suitably comfortable (hollywood twin roomy enough for a LARGE king sized bed with a love seat, table and arm chair) and extremely quiet for central Taipei. We had a room facing the NTU campus and didn't have any issues with noise other than from the hallway as there is a gap under the door. (We put a towel against the door each night to block out noise.) The bed is firm, great sheets, and has a tempur pedic topper that was very comfortable. It was so large and wide we could put our toddler on the bed to play without worrying about her falling off.
Room was also very clean and plenty of space to put things. The cleaning staff was equally thoughtful as the front desk. When they saw that we had a baby with us, they put in a baby bathtub and sitting stool for us when they cleaned the room. Our room only had a spacious shower, and it easier to wash the baby with the baby bathtub.
We absolutely loved the location just a 3minute stroll from NTU campus. It's perfect for small children to play in or for a stroll. We noticed that the air quality changed dramatically from Roosevelt Road to the NTU campus and it was wonderful to take walks around the campus for some fresh air and greenery each day. Lots of families and kids are there...just have to watch out for the bikes. Also great snacking/breakfast options inside the campus as well. There's even a barber/hair salon that costs just 70NTD for a shave or hairwash. Not fancy (old school style), but charming ladies inside and feels very local...part of the community even.
The Just Italian restaurant provides free breakfast each morning. It's simple, and not too much variety from day to day, but it was great to be able to just go downstairs each morning and eat without having to venture out. The staff is equally friendly and always provided high chairs for the children. Dinner buffet is slightly expensive at 620NTD a person, but again, it's very clean, great service and easy for families to dine there together.
Aside from Marc, I also want to commend Ray at the front desk. He helped us repeatedly with tasks like how to set up TaipeiFree wifi, ordering flowers, etc. Whatever questions we had, he helped us get answers immediately. We were so impressed with him and his demeanor! It really signifies what "warm and caring hospitality" means.
We had originally requested late checkout, but as this ends at 2pm, had to pay 1600NTU to check out at 6pm. This seems quite expensive for 4 hours, especially as we had been at the hotel for nearly 2 wks. I felt they could have extended this to us as a courtesy, but this was probably the only area where JustSleep let us down.
Lots have already been said about the night market across the street and you can find plenty online about the street eats at "Gongguan night market". This hotel isn't for partiers though. It's best for travelers who value quiet, quality, great service, and comfort.
I am thoroughly impressed with JustSleep@NTU and wouldn't hesitate staying here again on a repeat visit. I'm even interested now in checking out the hotel's other locations around Taiwan.
Thank you JustSleep@NTU for making our visit a fantastic one!
The breakfast in the Just Sleep was a buffet style with fresh cut fruit that included watermelon, pineapple, banana, and oranges. They had fresh mini-croissants that were not delicate, but they were fresh that morning. They also had a handful of cold cereals to choose, with roasted hazelnuts, raisins, sliced almonds, and brown sugar to put on. In addition, they had a selection of DIY salad veggies, that included sprouts, fresh tomatoes, shaved purple cabbages, and several other items. They also had a number of hot dishes that included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hard boiled eggs, and other dishes. In addition they had two kinds of yogurt and two kinds of yogurt drinks in small bottles for individual servings. Finally, they had a table containing dishes associated with a Chinese style breakfast -- soup, rice, fish, and other good things. They had various kinds of coffee and tea, and had cream or soy milk to add to this. It was an excellent breakfast and hands-down beats the standard fare at American hotels that serve a free breakfast buffet.
The floors are fairly small so it's hard not to get a room near the elevator, although there are a number of rooms not directly across from the elevator. I see why others may have felt there was hallway noise. The only point of criticism I have for this hotel is that there is that the bottom of the door to the room is not flush with floor, so there's about a centimeter crack below the door. This crack may be the reason for other reviewers indicating that they heard hallway noise. To be sure, the doors all lock tight and have a chain and bolt to ensure this. I slept well all nights, and did not hear any hallway noise. The king bed in my room was very firm and felt great after 29 hours in transit from the US. The AC in the hotel room was wonderful given that the outside temps in Taipei did not get much below 85 degrees F in the night time with high humidity outside. I've stayed in other hotels in Taiwan and they don't understand American intolerance for poor AC in a hotel room. You will sleep nice and cool in these rooms.
The rooms were fairly spacious -- something I did not expect. They came with a number of nice bathroom amenities, and there was plenty of hot water in the shower (not a tub). There was also a refrigerator in the room's closet, which had a number of hangars on it. The TV had several English language channels, and room had a couch, sitting couch, and desk in it. I had a big bay window in my room that looked out on the garden below. The hotel in actually on land owned by NTU and is at the edge of campus. If you have business with NTU, this is definitely the place to stay. There is a night market across the street with vendors who cater to NTU students. There's also many other shops and restaurants that are lively until 11:00 pm or so. Finally the hotel (like the campus) is a couple blocks from the riverside parkway that runs throughout Taipei. If you like to jog or rent a bicycle, this riverside parkway is wonderful greenspace and runs for miles around Taipei. The parkway encourages people who live in Taipei to get exercise as they have bike paths, jogging paths, soccer fields, and many other kinds of park areas design for fitness.
My room was anything but "just sleep" -- it was a nice hotel room that was an excellent place to relax and enjoy being cool and in a quiet place. I will return to this hotel when in Taipei again.
Rooms are good, clean and comfortable.
Food wise, we had breakfast and three of our dinners in Just Italian (all buffet style) - we especially enjoyed the food selection at dinner, and the presence of the tubs of Häagen Dazs icecream was the delight we looked forward to everyday.
Great location - Metro station was only 2mins walk away, night market just across the road.
We highly recommend JustSleep@NTU for fellow travellers who look for comfort, convenience and a personal touch.
Room was nicely appointed and certainly upgraded from last year when we stayed at same hotel under a different name.
There were hairs that were not ours, on the shower floor and there was an odor emanating from the toilet/sewer.
