We stayed for four nights as a group of ten friends and for me, this was my favourite accommodation on the trip. The whole property is relaxing and beautiful. All the rooms are lovely, but perhaps those separate to the main house are especially nice. My favourite was the Peacock room with a large bedroom and two terraces with doors...

We stayed 4 nights in the mud house. Hosts were superb and arranged everything for us and the breakfasts and food generally were superb. Pool and surroundings perfect for chilling out. We were very sorry to move on. Kids loved their little bunks in the house and watching the monkeys from the terrace. It was v hot when we were...

We spent 6 days at the Spice House, 3 nights in the Peacock and 3 in Cardamom room. Each room is tastefully and beautifully appointed as is the rest of the house and gardens. We never ceased to be amazed at the variety of both plants and wildlife and the fabulous views from every aspect. The pool is of course,...

What a fantastic guest-house with great attention to detail and comfort! The setting is superb, the service is excellent and the staff and owners are extremely friendly and helpful. We booked The Peacock room which is set at the bottom of the garden, it has 2 patios - one with it’s own "moat" full of tropical fish and the other...

We (a female couple) second all the praise heaped upon this place. We’d like to add that the garden has an incredible natural soundscape of birdsong, insects singing, rustling leaves, and the occasional bark of a dog. There’s no music during breakfast or dining or at all, in fact, which is a welcome change from most restaurants and hotels in...

You can tell that Phil the owner of spice house and his lovely wife have got it so right with the spice house. The place just feels so relaxed and its location is very peaceful. I wouldn't want to be in any of the other places near by. Do not hesitate to book in! We were with two kids who...

We slept in the Clove Cabin... There are shutters, blinds and curtains, but no glass windows!! You have the outdoor experience but indoors ! I got used to that ...eventually ! 😄 The food here was excellent. The chef prepared dinner for us and our friends and it was the best meal I had in Sri Lanka. He even shared...

I recently spent ten extra-ordinarily relaxing days in Phil’s and Wathsala’s paradise at the south coast of Sri Lanka. What both of them created offers the quality of a premium boutique hotel: great atmosphere, best service and excellent food! What impressed me most was Phil’s and Wathsala’s kindness. The way they look after their guests is amazing – they will...

What a nice place, a great house, garden and pool. We stayed in the mudhouse in the back of the garden. A super place with outdoor shower, private terrace overlooking the forest, where we saw 3 sort of monkeys, birds (o.a. Kingfishers), mongoose and chipmunks. The breakfast was good, with every day a special Sri Lanka dish. We have also...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Spice House, Mirissa is a beautiful Colonial style guesthouse with its own private swimming pool set in a peaceful, landscaped garden full of tropical flowers, fruits, spices, ponds & hammocks. It is ideally situated only one minute from a beautiful, reef protected bay & 1km from the main bustle of Mirissa beach. The guesthouse is English owned by an experienced traveller and his Sri Lankan Wife which allows us to offer our guests the perfect mix of Western comfort & luxury alongside Sri Lankan charm & service - we like our guests to feel like part of the family. The house is shaded by coconut palms & cinnamon trees to the front while the back is terraced which allows wonderful views over the surrounding jungle. Local wildlife is often seen in our garden with daily visits from monkeys, kingfishers, peacocks, woodpeckers & squirrels. We can also help with Airport transfers & booking whale watching trips during the season (November - April). ... more   less
