Three ladies with bikes on a three night cycling holiday in Essex. Whilst other hotels in the Colchester area showed little interest in offering secure overnight storage for our bikes. The Mistley Thorn whilst not having a dedicated storage area WERE happy for us to lock our bikes in the rear unused dining area. This meant we could be quickly ready to go in the morning. Much appreciated.

We were very puzzled when we arrived in Mistley as the hotel is not the attractive building with the Swan in the front but the drab grey building opposite. Once we did find it no-where to park and this is not a hotel but restaurant with rooms. Unfortunately we did not read the reviews regarding room 8 which we were taken to. Firstly very low sloping ceilings and but was even worse was the constant noise from the kitchen extracter fan and when you closed the small window was boiling hot. When I mentioned this the next morning I was met with a look of suprise but now realise this is a real issue with this room which the staff are well aware of. The housekeeper on our 3rd night must have turned on the heater/aircon which kept coming on in the night making the floor creak sounding as if a ghost in the room. Three sleepless nights was not what I imagined of which was supposed to be a restful break. The room was however well appointed and clean. The car park only has two spaces so you have to park in a busy road or side street which is not idea. I will say though that the food is good, particuarly the breakfast choices and the male staff were very welcoming. The restaurant was very busy which is always a good sign.

We went for a Saturday lunch on a rainy October day whilst visiting the area. I was worried that it might be quite quiet, but there was a great atmosphere with most tables taken. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We ate from the set menu with the highlight being pork shoulder which had been slow roasted for 9 hours. Wine list was good and well priced, As it is a pub/restaurant there are good beers on offer too. Would recommend if you are in the area.

We went with our friends and their elderly father on Saturday for lunch. We had done a rekey with regard to access etc. We were met on the day by staff and a ramp ready for a wheelchair, if needed. They were ready for us and sat us at the table that we requested. Very attentive staff, polite and friendly. We had a fantastic meal and would definitely recommend it. We will definitely be going back.

We grew to quite like the Mistley Thorn, but think it is important to clear a few things up: Firstly, the lovely building that comes up on Trip Advisor – a swan in the foreground and 2/3 brick 1/3 cream rendered brick is NOT the Mistley Thorn. It is in fact the building across the road from the Mistley. The Mistley Thorn hotel is a corner building with a brown door on the left, as shown on a google search for their website, but it is now a gray coloured building. Secondly, for all intents and purposes, it does not have a car park. There is a space at the back for two cars, with very narrow, awkward access. You do need to be comfortable about leaving your car parked overnight on the main road, which is both busy and noisy. We had room 7, mentioned in the reviews, not realising just how low and restrictive the sloping ceilings were. We are 5/8 and 5/10 tall, and we both banged our head several times just moving around the room. We did not find the part of Mistley that the hotel is in that attractive, and the estuary views are, in our opinion, not very scenic. As you can probably gather, we were disappointed when we arrived. However, there is good news. Firstly, all the staff were very pleasant and professional, absolutely first class. Secondly the room was immaculate on arrival, and refreshed to top standards each day. I have saved the best till last – the food. The eating areas have a real buzz, both guests and locals eat here, and it is has a really good atmosphere. The food itself was always excellent, and that included the breakfast. We stayed four nights, we were out and about during the day, but always looked forward to going down to eat in the evening.
