The beaches are beautiful and the resort is in a well kept condition. The staff are very nice and will help with whatever you ask! The excursion are well worth the money, especially if you want to learn a little more about Cuba! Huge recommendation to anyone looking to get away!

I went to this resort mid February by myself, felt safe and I had a great time. The staff are great and there were a few times when I requested a lift to my room on the golf cart just to be sure I made it to my room safe. Urbi was my driver a few times and he was awesome! He even gave me a tour one night as it was too dark for me to be wandering around on my own. He was always ready to stop and pick people up or offer directions if needed. I was in building 10 and I had lots of hot water, a clean room and had bottled water delivered every day. My balcony door locked and the safe worked. When I arrived I needed to get the safe reset as I needed a new code and they did it on the day that I requested it. The only thing was that I didn't get wifi in my room but that was fine by me. I did see other guests hanging around outside the building watching stuff on their phones but I just went to the lobby if I needed to connect. I will take hot water and a clean room over wifi in my room. I was Diamond Club and it was well worth it. I am not a super picky eater but going to the restaurant meant I could get an omelette, scrambled or over easy eggs without waiting in a 20-person long line - and it is table service from the nicest ladies! Lunch in the restaurant was three courses and the portions were perfect for lunch. I even had wine with lunch! The Diamond Club dinner was Thursday night and It was great! We even had some live entertainment! You need to ask at the Diamond Club desk in the lobby for a booking. I had the Italian restaurant and the Asian restaurant for my a la carte dinners and the Italian was the best by far! I had a friend with me and we shared lasagna and pizza. Amazing! Also, there is a snack bar that (sometimes) had chicken nuggets, (sometimes) had pizza as well as burgers and spaghetti. They also (usually) had beer and other drinks. The "party pool" and the lobby usually had beer. So yes they had shortages and all they had for hard alcohol was rum and scotch. There was Anise and a few other options but none of the usual spirits. So if you NEED vodka or gin, bring your own. Wine was also sometimes not available. I am not much of a rum drinker but they can make some tasty options for you and I brought Mio-type stuff and I would sometimes drink it with rum and water. Quite often they an out of beer (there were a lot of young people there at the time I was there) by 10 or 11 at night so I either drank something else or went to bed. They always got more by the next day around 10am or 11am. I didn't see a lot of the entertainment so I can't really comment on it. The week went so fast and I don't know why I missed the entertainment but I am sure I was doing something important at the time :) So yes there were shortages some days. I wish I had brought instant coffee as sometimes the coffee would arrive around 10am or 11am and then the lobby lines for coffee were super long! Of course, I survived. All of my concerns are based on my "home" expectations so I am not holding them against the resort. I knew that there would be shortages before booking and the booking agent also advised me. My only suggestion is that they give some sort of handout to Diamond Club (and Sanctuary) guests as it took me a few days to figure all the perks out and find the Diamond Club restaurant. That restaurant made a huge difference to the enjoyment of my experience at the resort. I did meet people who didn't realize they had the Diamond Club dinner and access to the restaurant until the very en of their trip. I needed a vacation and this one provided the relaxation I needed. I did not get stressed about the little things.

We had the best vacation here. Amelia was the greatest DJ. The housekeeper kept our room clean. It was the best vacation we ever had. We had the best drinks at the bar. They took care of us like no other. The best experience. All the sunshine in the world.

I want to start by saying I love Cuba. It is absolutely beautiful with it's crystal blue and turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. I also understand that this is a third world country and that what makes a 4.5 star in Mexico is very different from a 4.5 star in Cuba but come on...this was ridiculous. I did a little research to find out that Grand Memories is a subsidiary company to Sunwing. So I guess I should title my review, "Shame on you, Sunwing." I know the people of Cuba work hard but to witness the deterioration of a once beautiful resort is saddening. We were at the Riu (Grand Memories was a Riu for the first two years) upon opening. The facility was beautiful. We went again the following year and already bared witness to the deterioration occurring. Small things like toilet seats disappearing, doors swelling, broken tiles, etc. that were never fixed or replaced. Flash forward thirteen years and a two year shutdown due to Covid, and what do you come back to? A joke. Oh my! We purchased diamond club purely for the location of the room as it is closest to the beach. We were to have a stocked fridge (never), premium amenities (nope), all the pomp and circumstance. We got nothing. Nothing. We got a broken room, a couple bottles of water, 2 bath towels and two beach towels. That was it. For the week. We were rationing toilet paper fearing that our roll of toilet paper would not be restocked. Why would I think that? I don't think the pool bathroom had toilet paper for the duration of our stay. None. Hence my apprehension. We were provided two a la cartes - we chose gourmet and Italian. Gourmet consisted of a Maître D' who was so unbelievably rude that I had to walk out. There was a couple, the female was wheelchair bound. The restaurant had two doors however only one was open. At 7:00, when the restaurant opened, the husband tried to push his wife through the door. Her chair was too wide. We went to help and tried to open the second door. The maître d simply yelled, the door is broken. She made NO attempt to assist this couple...AT ALL. Accessibility is a human right and dignity must be maintained. The maître d did nothing but embarrass this couple. Through the determination of the wonderful Canadian spirit, we were able to get her into the restaurant with most of her dignity in tact however I was horrified and appalled by the lack of humanity the maître d demonstrated. The buffet - same food. All day. Every day. Unless they ran out of something. Then it was gone. Maybe it would come back if there was a delivery but for the most part it was the same. Fish. Lamb. Chicken. Two different rices. Two different pastas. All freezing cold. All the time. Desserts were the biggest draw - specifically the ice cream. People, however, are gluttons and it was absolutely embarrassing to watch the amount people would take and waste. Not a Sunwing issue however you need to keep that in mind. It's kind of like Costco - if you see something you like, take some because you will not be guaranteed that there will be any left when you're ready. Also, you better like rum because that's really the only alcohol there. And sometimes they had cola, or sprite(ish) pop, or orange pop. A distribution issue for sure but part of the reality. Were the people nice - for the most part, yes. Do they care or seem to have any sense of pride in their work - not really evident. I would guess they are not really rewarded by going over and above so why would they. I am absolutely torn because Cuba needs tourism to survive however the owners of these resorts need to prioritize them and make it so that tourists want to come. They also need to take care of their employees. Would I rate this resort a 4.5 star? Heck no. I'll give it a three. Was it worth the money we spent? Nope. Are we heading back to Cuba in a month? Yep - they need us. PS - bring USD, basic toiletries, clothing, sandals, balls, etc. This means more to the hotel staff then a tip ever will.

My Husband and I just visited Sanctuary at Grand Memories Varadero, and it was amazing! We enjoyed everything about this resort. The staff were great at getting us to our room and taking our luggage up for us... it was about 1 a.m. The staff friendly and always smiling! Our butler Janet & Thalia were awesome at making sure everything was good and making our a la carte reservations for us! Amparo our cleaning lady was also awesome and so sweet !! We had a great view from our balcony even though it wasn't ocean view and the walk to the beach was short and enjoyable . The food was excellent, tasty and plentiful !! the resort was very clean, well maintained and we felt very safe walking at different times night or day and when we took bus into Varadero for the day. We highly recommend this hotel and we will certainly book here again in the future! THANK YOU for making our first trip to Cuba memorable and amazing!! Brian & Nancy McKinnon

-Awful holiday. And I'm being flattering. 1 Star. Originally, I was happy when I found out that Sunwing bought it figuring they've made improvements & set higher standard (10 yrs ago, when I was here last, this was a legit 4 plus star hotel. WRONG; -Food was very mediocre at best; Powdered eggs; Something they called bacon. The only food I liked was barbequed fish & chicken. Very tasty. Rest?? -Usually ran out of vine half way through lunch or dinner (one dinner had none). And when they had it (red or white) it was poor quality; -Any drink you want as long as its one of 15-20 types of rums; Had Gin one day & Vodka 2 days; Many hours at the time not even beer was available. They had something they called Coke. Awful. No tonic water, soda, Pepsi. -We had to use same bath towel for most of week (only gave us 2/room); Promised to change after 5 days and they came through next day (but only 1 of us got a clean one); -Replaced pillow cases one day. Did not bring new, clean ones till next day. Disgusting. -My friends toilet seat was cracked -pinching "cheek" every time. Asked to be fixed/replaced twice. Nothing. And he was "coned into" upgrading room. Hate to think what regular room was like. -He was lucky. Another couple in our group of over 20 had NO toilet seat at all -YES, JUST BOWL. -Reception: For most part good to very good; Polite & knowledgeable, except: Our plane arrived at noon. Our rooms were not ready. Not unusual. And what do you know: some 50 rooms got ready in the last 5 mins at exactly 4pm. WHY? WHY? WHY? Staff: One thing that Cuba was always know for (my 6th or 7th trip to Cuba)-Always very good to exceptional service & courtesy. Here: a huge drop off; still some very good to excellent but a lot of ??? A lot of them (not all) have come to expect decent tips & more. You tip a dollar or 2 & the disgusted look is: What is this? Seriously: a dollar (or 2 tip) for bringing 2 glasses of water 10 mins after I sat down & cleaning my table after a buffet lunch. -Hotel activities: For most part poor or non existent. Mostly a fat, shirtless guy calling himself Michael Jackson walking around I believe is not what Id call entertainment. -Pool entertainment: Generally non existent. Had some loud music on one side. Most hotels I've been to, they'd have several people walking around pool & asking people to join what ever was going on (pool volleyball, water polo, pool exercise, water games... If they had any, don't know. Shame as pool was huge & very impressive. Beach was very nice. All in all -Im done with Grand memories; Probably done with Varadero & Cuba & sure done with Sunwing (crappy, cramped planes). Speaking about Sunwing: Their rep on the bus was more interested in talking us (succeeded with few people) into selling for "much better rate" US dollars into Cuban pesos. Sunwing had an office there, many times I'd walk bye, nobody there. As this is their business now, one might think a rep would walk by pool, beach, mingle & talk to people. Like: what can we do to improve....Don't care. Well me neither. I left this review hoping to save 1 or 2 people of making the same mistake & coming to Sunwing's Grand Memories. Hasta la vista Varadero.

OUR experience at Grand Memories was not good at all! We arrived at around 8pm, as we get the keys to our room we walk in and the sheets were dirt. No towels or toilet paper, we then walk back to the main office because the phone they have doesn’t work. After getting a new room we walk and you can smell the mold in it. No one helped us with ours bags or nothing! We went back to the other room as it was a little better but still had mold. They said they would change the sheets for us, so we went out to have some drinks and came back at 1am and they still didn’t change them! We never got toilet paper or water in the room. My husband got worse and had a hard time to breathe so they said they would find a better room. We changed room again for the 3 time and you think they would help with the bags nope. Well we got toilet paper in the new room. we didn’t get any new towels and had to use shower towels and beach together. We have not been away in 10 years and to come here and all this happens Is unacceptable. We had book a jeep excursion and well we were told that amazing things it did not happen. There were many things we could not do and everything took forever because they had so many people do it at the same time. Rooms are not 4*. No bottles in dispensers anymore. Furniture is falling apart. Shower was warm most days. We did bring 1 roll of toilet paper from home and kept in the safe to always have some to take when out of room as many times washrooms didn't have any. Food shortage is real. Powdered eggs, bread always, no butter except 1 day, no bacon most days, very little (unripe) fruit (pineapple , guava, maybe watermelon) not even seen fries. There is food you wont starve but we did lose weight on this vacation. Get to buffet early if you want best chance at getting options as the “rare” things like bacon and butter are gone fast. Snack bar hamburger made us sick in bed for a day. The fact that we had to Bring condiments and stuff. Alcohol ran out daily. Many time no vodka gin tequila. Rum always though if you don't mind it with water…maybe juice. Even beer ran out and pop! but when talking to other travelers at other hotels they never ran out of any. This seems to be a resort issue and not a shortage issue. Had too many walks to the desk to reprogram your room key as this is an issue with many guests. We did it at least once a day. Also not very secure when they just ask your room number without asking a name or anything. I could say any room number. Also witnessed guests being told just to get their own bags from the “lock up” so again could take any bag. Towels/sheets aren't always clean and replaced only once when we asked and tipped for it. Many time we saw towels “saving” chairs around the pool and beach and no one used them all day. This is ridiculous and should not happen. Be respectful to others. This was by far the worst experience we have ever had. We both still can’t breathe, no voice and cough. I will never go back again.
