- [ ] The white sandy beach is beautiful, 20 km long so you can walk en masse! There are enough palapas and sun loungers for everyone. We had no seaweed and there are no pebbles or shells so no risk of injury. There are garbage cans on the beach but people, unfortunately, do not always use them and when they are full, not always emptied quickly... There is a bar near the beach and sometimes service to your deck chair...
- [ ] The buffet now because at this Pension there is only the buffet. Lunch is very good, eggs or omelets every day, homemade waffles (they have a waffle maker!) and lots of fruits: mangoes, pineapple, papaya, guava... We had bacon 2-3 times... The coffee is ordinary but they have Italian machines at the Lobby Bar and Snack Bar and we took many excellent cappuccino! The snack bar offers only sandwiches: omelets, ham and cheese...
-[ ] At lunch there are several kinds of rice and grills: beef, pork, fish and squid... Few vegetables, cucumber and sometimes avocados. There are desserts and always excellent ice cream...
- [ ] In the evening it’s not bad the same so redundant, but we had lobster twice (Friday)... To break the routine, we went to dinner at the restaurant every two days. There are excellent ones including the Vaca Rosada within walking distance (charming property owner who speaks fluent French) and two Italians: the Don Alex (excellent pizza) and the Nonna Tina (great atmosphere, it feels like Italy!). We also went to El Aljibe (very short menu but grilled fish and rice with excellent black beans) and Vernissage (I ate better pasta in pesto than in several restaurants in Quebec!)
- [ ] The return went well despite an hour delay due to the storm in Florida. At the airport, few things to eat except sandwiches or pizza at $6 US!... The boarding was a bit messy employees not respecting the priority offered by the More...
[ ] True, there are many Cubans at this Pension. Most behave well but unfortunately, especially at the buffet, some think they are allowed, pass in front of you, empty the dishes and are downright selfish and arrogant!...
**Positives:**
- **Great Staff**: The staff at Club Tropical were a real highlight. They were friendly, accommodating, and always eager to help. They made a noticeable effort to ensure that guests felt welcomed.
- **Great Location**: The hotel is ideally located near beautiful beaches and attractions, offering easy access to the surrounding area.
**Negatives:**
- **Terrible Food & Drinks**: Unfortunately, the food and drinks were a major disappointment even for Cuba. ZERO variety, NO eggs. NO desserts. Fruit was unripe and the quality of the food was subpar at best. Many times, key ingredients or alcohol were out of stock, leaving limited options. The drinks were weak and poorly made, adding to the overall letdown.
- **Overcrowding by Locals**: The hotel allows locals to come in daily, which led to overcrowding at meal times and at the bars. These guests seemed to get priority service, often consuming all the food and drinks before paying guests had a chance. This created frustration, especially during peak times when it was hard to find anything to eat or drink.
- **Uncomfortable Entertainment**: The entertainment staff constantly asked for tips, often in a forceful and uncomfortable manner. It detracted from the enjoyment of the performances and created an awkward atmosphere.
- **Health Concerns & Poor Customer Service**: I became sick during my stay, and instead of offering assistance or arranging transportation to a clinic, I was threatened with being added to a "not fit to fly" list by Sunwing, the travel provider. This response was not only unhelpful but also quite distressing, leaving me feeling unsupported in a time of need.
- **Uncomfortable Atmosphere with Local Women**: There were a lot of women at the hotel who seemed to be looking for relationships with male guests, often with the intention of being "rented" or financially supported. The staff appeared to turn a blind eye to this behavior, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere for many guests. It felt like a part of the resort's culture that went largely unchecked, and it certainly wasn't what I expected from a supposedly family-friendly all-inclusive resort.
Conclusion:
While Club Tropical has a great staff and an excellent location, the quality of food, drinks, and overall guest experience was very disappointing. The overcrowding, forced tipping, and uncomfortable atmosphere with local women looking for relationships all detracted from what could have been a relaxing vacation. Coupled with the lack of support when I became ill, I would not recommend this hotel to others. I won’t be returning.

Manager, Mr. Barbaro Honorio Dias Gonsalez has to be the very best Manager in all the years I have been going to Tropical. Every day he is very hands-on and very visible everywhere in the Hotel . The changes at Club Tropical are totally amazing from the reception area, rooms, dining room to the 2 bars. Kudos (elogios) to the Manager for all his good management and hard work. Tropical is a very well situated quaint hotel in town with a wonderful beach and pool. Because it is a smaller hotel, the staff remembers you from year to year. One has the impression of being part of a family, not just another tourist as we have experienced at larger and pricier hotels in Varadero. I have been to Varadero 56 times and I have stayed in many different hotels 3*, 4* hotels, and I still come back to Club Tropical because of the ambiance. As usual, the excellent Public Relation Representative "Emilce" went out of her way to welcome us and to keep in touch and make sure that I was happy with my accommodation and service. No need to worry because we found our room always well cleaned by smiling and helpful maids whom we have known for many years. The hotel has been making great efforts to improve every year. The number of chairs and beds around the pool and on the beach are plentiful. The staff are always very helpful and friendly. The food and soup were very good but sometimes a bit repetitive. We were a bit disapointed with the fact that there was no pasta bar this year. I assume that pasta was not accessible to the hotel this year. There was plenty and a good variety of fresh fruits, raw or cooked vegetables, meat and fish. I think people need a reality check, when you go to Cuba you are not in Canada so enjoy the beach, the sun, the lovely Cuban people and stop being negative about the food and little things that don't really matter. If you want a 5* hotel go for it. It might not be as good as you might think. Myself I prefer a 3* hotel in the centre of Varadero where you are close to restaurants, the "hop-on, hop-off bus which stops right in front of the hotel, the many flea markets close by. The proximity to downtown Varadero is a bonus if you like to take walks and catch the local scenery/routine.
ClubTropical offers excellent value for an economy hotel and I would not hesitate to recommend it to my family and friends or anyone seeking a pleasant vacation "Without having to break the Bank". Finally, many staff members speak english and some speak french. The only negative issue is that they need to do some work with the hardware in the bathrooms in the rooms and the pipes. The pipes are a bit rusted. Club Tropical was full when we went for our 2 weeks vacation and I know why, it is wonderful place to stay in Varadero.
My disagreement is with the buffet table service, what bothered me most is that a lot of time is wasted waiting in line at the grill, unfortunately there is no other option in the hot part, in the 3 days there was only minced meat and chicken, yesterday For example, the chicken was practically boiled, and the rice was full of stones,
The pork, the fish, the beef, only on the grill, so we have no choice but to go, the vast majority who are in the hotel to that one place, so it is logical that there will be a long queue that this causes.
Last year the buffet service (I mean the clerks) was much better, and this year I don't see it that way, on several occasions I had to get up to carry the empty plates that were bothering me on the table.
I take this opportunity to congratulate Kenya (table buffet), I affectionately called her Run the Road, because she didn't walk, she ran quickly to be able to do her job in the best possible way, always with a smile and very kind.
The relationship that exists between the reception, the waitress and maintenance is very positive. The day we arrived, the maintenance guys were in one of our rooms making repairs. On one occasion I reported the air conditioning and in a very short time they solved it without making any repairs. room change.
The day we arrived, August 28, when we went to the snark, the ham and cheese sandwiches, too simple, a sample of cold cheese and ham, unfortunately of very poor quality.
In the lobby bar it caught my attention that the boy who worked today, August 31, does not wash the glasses, he only rinses them, he does not use detergent or other implements to wash the glasses that are used there.
I hope that this evaluation will help the hotel to further improve its service.

There are no a la carte restaurants at the hotel but the buffet provided a good selection. There are restaurants nearby which are affordable - El Torro, La Sangria, and the Pink Cow come to mind.
The hotel seems determined to raise its star rating. Unfortunately, years of being a bargain hunters destination has left it with a core of regular customers who might not be consistent with becoming a more family oriented operation. The management and staff are motivated but the clientele may hold them back.
All in all it's a good hotel. Lots of hot water, clean, friendly staff, a/c worked well, reasonably good food, and no problem getting at seat poolside or at the beach. The biggest plus is the location - walk out the front door and you're downtown, walk out the back door and you're on the finest beach in the world.
