We stayed at the Iberostar Playa Alameda resort in Varadero for 4 days this January. This hotel is very good value for money.

Our connecting rooms were very clean and well appointed. We had lovely renovated bathrooms with rainfall shower heads with lots of hot water and good pressure. Our housekeepers provided extra water for us at our request.

The beach was lovely with lots of lounge chairs and activities during the morning. I would recommend going early and reserving some chairs in the morning as it does fill up.

The food was fine. You won’t starve. Some highlights were the omelette station at breakfast, the fresh grilled fish at lunch and dinner and the paella available at the beach just after lunch. The snack bar had some inconsistencies about what was available when. We did try the Romantico a la cart which was fine, and we did make reservations for the Cuban al a cart, but decided to just eat a the buffet once we saw the menu as it was very similar.

The pool and beach bathrooms did not flush, however the lobby bathrooms were always clean and working fine.

The entertainment and shows were great. We had so much fun at the beach party. If you want to watch the bands at the lobby, go early and grab a table and chairs as it does get busy.

Overall, this place was great! Clean, fairly well maintained and has everything you need for a relaxing get away on a beautiful beach. If consistency and variety of food is very important to you, perhaps try a true 5 star or a place other than Cuba.

Some tips:
- bring your own beach towel for the day you arrive and leave. Beach towels are only available in your rooms and much be left once you check out (there is a fee if you want to rent beyond check out)
- there are showers in the gym located outside the front lobby to shower and rinse off after you’ve checked out of your hotel room. There are small gym towels available to help dry off.
-try to cappuccinos at the piano bar they are delicious!

First time to Cuba and I received wonderful service all around at this resort.

I had the pleasure of being checked in by the Shaila at the front desk who greeted me with a smile and gave me a lovely room with a view of the pool area. All my interactions with her were always pleasant.

The room was spacious, had a very comfortable king bed and sitting area. I also had the pleasure of having Jessie as my housekeeper during my stay and she did a excellent job of maintaining the rooms cleanliness and even putting my wet towels outside to dry.

Even though I didn't have a chance to thank her in person, she commutated to my by leaving a notes introducing herself and wishing me a safe trip home, and even left me a reminder to not forget to leave the towel in the room as to not be charged extra for them.

The dining at the hotel was varied with different snack bars, restaurants and the main buffet. I mostly ate at the buffet which had some of the comforts of home or new substitutes to discover. They have an made to order egg station with a wide range of things to add, and at night, they have the same but for pasta (pick your noodle, sauce and other additions) so everyone gets what the want.

The hotel also has live variety shows in the evening that are done outside near the Lobby for everyone to enjoy.

Not to forget, you're only a 2 minute walk from the beach, with a bar right by the entrance of the beach to keep the fun going.

Just got back from a wonderful 7 night stay at the Iberostar Playa Alameda in Varadero. This was our 12th time to Cuba but our first visit to this resort. The staff were super friendly and catered to all our needs. The check in was quick and efficient with a clear explanation of all the resort amenities. Our room was very clean and tidy upon arrival. Two bottles of water and a mini bar with beer and pop. The maid did an excellent job tiding up the room daily and although they said the mini bar/water would be restocked every other day, all I had to do was ask and we were provided with two large bottles of water daily.
The food was excellent in our opinion and there was plenty of variety at the buffet and beach restaurants. There are three a la carte’s to chose from (we tried the Italian and the International which was actually an authentic Cuban themed menu and very good!)

My only criticism would be some of the selfish vacationers at the beach. My wife and I spent a good amount of time at the beach. Arriving early after breakfast and ready to soak up the sun by 9am or so. Many of the prime spots were already reserved by beach towels before we got there. It was shocking to see how many people didn’t show up to use their place on the beach until several hours later. I admit we spent much of our time at the beach but we never left our place unattended for any longer than to go for a swim, grab a drink or a quick bite. The resort should have more beach chairs available for sure, but more importantly, shame on all you selfish people that thought of no one else but yourselves.
That aside, we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this hotel. *A special shout out to Juan who is one of the main waiters at the beach grill (that guy works so hard to please everybody ... one of the best!)

The beaches in Varadero are absolutely beyond expectation. The water is a beautiful blue and the temperature is perfect. If you are going to Cuba strictly for the beaches this is definitely a good place to stay. The beach at this resort seems quieter than the rest we walked past over our holiday. Since it is an adults only there were no screaming kids. The only downfall to the beach is you do have to go early to snag chairs if it is busy and some chairs are not the best quality. There is also no beach service and the beach bar is often quite busy.

Overall the service at this resort was terrible. It seemed as though the bartenders didn’t care at all what order people arrived they just served whoever they felt like. The front desk staff was rude and not very accomodating, they would talk amongst themselves before helping a line of people. The maid service was average at best, they rarely replaced toilet paper and towels. Some members of our group only had their rooms cleaned once the duration of the 8 day trip. When one member of our group asked for more toilet paper as they were out the maid said no and walked away. The mini fridge in the rooms were restocked every second day if you were lucky. Mine was only replaced once during the trip. When I asked the front desk for water they rudely denied.... They seemed to run out of items throughout the trip, especially at the bar where I asked for several drinks and the bartender just kept saying no.

The hotel is run down there is a renovated section of the resort but we were not located in that building. We had cockroaches in our room and the blankets had blood on them. Our A/C barely worked. Our door barely closed and we couldn’t open the sliding glass patio door.

I would like to highly rate our waitresses at the lunch and breakfast buffet. Yudisley and Martha. They were beyond amazing our whole trip and saved us a table everyday for our large group. They had amazing service from day one. We also had a few nice bartenders at the evening patio bar. The gardeners were all extremely friendly and even made us flowers out of palm trees, all the other staff should take note of these few and learn from them!

Dear guest, Firstly we thank you for contacting us to share your concerns related to your recent holiday. We are very pleased to hear that our beautiful hotel and grounds and spectacular location was to your liking and that the warmth and friendliness of some of our staff shone through and made a wonderful impression on you. We are however sorry you did not feel the same way about all of our employees. Making our guests feel welcome and looked after is a priority for us so we will certainly look into this with our team and use it as a training opportunity. Similarly, we regret that you found there to be a lack of certain amenities and that you found the housekeeping lacking at times. We can assure you we follow a strict cleaning routine of all areas of the hotel including the rooms, linen and towels. We are sorry if this was not the impression you received and rest assured we will pass on your feedback to the relevant department. We sincerely hope that you will allow us another opportunity to demonstrate our true level of hospitality and interest in satisfying you completely. Having been to Cuba a few times, we knew what to expect. We always bring a roll or two of toilet paper, thin travel towels and snacks. Other than those items, we had all we needed. We were given fresh towels, our fridge was restocked when needed and the restaurants had plenty of selection. Yes, it is the same daily but you are in a country that has difficulty getting most items. Based on that, we were impressed with what they offered.
Our room was not fancy and was dated but it was clean and we spend so little time there that it was no big deal.
The staff were friendly, the grounds always clean and it once again made us happy we had picked an Iberostar resort.
My only negative comment relates to the beach and pool chair situation. They most definitely need more. It is frustrating to have to get to the beach by 630am each day in order to secure chairs. I am not certain if they have a difficult time getting more chairs but is should be their first priority. We are accustomed to having to get to the chairs early but this was the most extreme situation we have seen.
Would I return? Most certainly. Cuba is about the beaches, the sun and the friendly people. We had a wonderful week.
Thank-you to all the wonderful staff

We were at the resort the week of March 7-14th for a mother and daughters week get away and this was our first time at the resort. We chose this place because it was a smaller adults only resort and went in knowing that aspects of the resort are a little run down. Arriving at the resort, there are some buildings that have had renovations and updates to the rooms, but it appears that most are still in the condition that we stayed in – outdated, dowdy, but okay comfort and cleanliness. It is a fairly basic room and on the smaller side, although the three of us found enough space. The in-room fridges appear to be refilled only every second day.
By and large the staff are really what make this resort a good value option for travel. The day time entertainment team lead by Charly work hard to engage and bring a level of fun to the day without being overly pushy. Their energy, joy and enthusiasm is wonderful. In the main buffet area, Judi and Martha at breakfast and lunch (in the section immediately to the left of when you first come in the restaurant) and Jacqueline (dinner – left side of the restaurant) are standouts. They will go the extra mile to make you feel special. The food at the buffet is a little repetitive, but there is enough variety and fresh choice. The staff working the special Friday night dinners are excellent – this is an extra charge meal, but it is worth it. However, we found the staff in the speciality restaurants lacking in basic customer service, and frankly the food wasn’t that great. They didn't tell us when we made our reservations for dinner that the Cuban restaurant and the Italian restaurant are in the same space on alternating nights - the old Italian restaurant is still there but empty, so that led to some confusion. At the Cuban restaurant, we liked the "Fried Havana Cow" the best, but it is a weird translation. It is a traditional shredded beef dish with rice and beans that is pretty tasty. At the Italian the pasta bolognese was the best of our three dishes. Can't even remember the meal from Romantic. The front desk staff are among the least helpful and most rude in dealing with customers.
Bar wise, the lobby bar had the best drinks of all the bars that we tried. The pool is lovely and the beach lovely too. I think they heard the feedback about the lack of lounge chairs at the beach (in previous feedback) because there were extra stacks of chairs and we didn’t have a lot of difficulty finding a chair when we went on the nice days. Absolutely avoid the beach bathrooms – the toilets don’t flush well and it doesn’t take long before they are a mess. If you are headed out on an early morning and go to use the bathrooms in the main lobby area, bring toilet paper as they seemed to be empty both times we had early morning departures for something but were filled the rest of the time.
This is a decent value resort – you get what you pay for, but most of the staff really make this a good visit and worth a try. Just keep your expectations modest.

Let's start with the good
The staff was very pleasant and always eager to please.
The checkin process was easy and not time consuming like other larger resorts which is a huge plus for us.
Entertainment was limited however they were talented and fun to watch.
The beach was very nice and generally easy to get loungers under the tiki huts.
Rooms were very spacious and clean, love the showers!
The location is reasonably close to the airport however when you add the extra stops for the other hotels it's just over an hour to get to the hotel however the bus is comfortable and clean.

Stuff we have seen better at other resorts
The grounds are ok and not as lush as some other similar priced resorts but not a big deal for us.
The food is typical for Cuba however if you got to the buffet before the big rush we found we could enjoy what they had prepared - tip - because there is a limit that this island can offer for food variety, dont eat everything you see, spread it out throughout the week....they do what they can with what they have.
The alacart restaurants were not as good as other locations we have been however they were pleasant and generally quick with service

My wife and I stayed here few days ago, Feb/March 2022. This hotel is an older resort but is clean and very quaint. The pool and beach areas are great. The buffet is amazing, the staff are so helpful including the chefs. A special thank you to Anisleidys, Yudisley and a young man at the buffet. To David our house cleaner.
This hotel has a bar area with lots of seating outside some of it covered areas. It is extremely popular, it reminds me of sitting at a cafe in Spain, France, Italy, Greece etc.
The coffee is awesome, the Spanish red wine is great, beer Crystal is great too.
I heard more laughing and people having a good time at this hotel than most others put together!
There is a small bar where Frank and his colleague explain cigars, lots of selection, individual cigars for $7.50 to $11 USA Cohiba's etc.
Beach towels, reception reserves $30 per towel on your credit card, gives you ticket to collect towels. Upon leaving the hotel, you hand in your towels, collect the ticket and reception don't charge your credit card.
Few niggling issues, air con not working upon arrival, few hours later fixed.
Third floor patio door, the lock had grown legs and walked. Early check in, room was ready but due to a towel fixture missing from previous clients, delayed the room till 5 pm.
Fridge did not work but no beer or fizzy drinks anyway. Shower awesome, but requires unblocking so drainage would be better.
We did not let these few issues annoy us, this hotel has fantastic staff, great ambiance and we loved it. No booze after 1 am which may bother other people. We loved the staff here, the pool, bars, service, food. It's adults only, I read over 11 yrs only, most hotels are over 16 yrs, zero kids during our stay so unlike other hotels the staff were not lumbered with guests kids whilst mummy and daddy got drunk at the bar, ( saw this in Mexico yikes!) Enjoy your stay.

We booked this as a low cost hot vacation but knowing that Cuba has limitations with accessing food, drinks and other supplies. The hotel was in good condition but some areas were clearly tired. Although the bar had an extensive drink menu there was no whiskey, tequila, vodka or gin. They did have a good selection of Havana Club Rum including some top shelf that made for good sipping but beware. The lobby bar did make some good Spanish coffee and cappuccino.

We upgraded to a Suite that was in Building 15. The suite was a double adjoining room with one configured for sleeping and one for sitting but the second TV shut off by itself so never got used. We had 2 balconies but the door on the second one was too stiff to open. The furniture is tired and stiff but did the job and the room was cool so we got a blanket delivered. As for public rest rooms be sure ladies keep some toilet paper/hand sanitizer with you and that some may not work. We did call in and some issues were resolved and others, well...

The main buffet has a pretty good selection but don't set your expectations too high and you won't be disappointed. Cereal choices were corn flakes or frosted flakes and was with either skim or powdered milk. Fruits and vegetables are limited and kind of bland. There is a few good cooking stations for fish, pasta, and omelets at breakfast. They had a decent selection of cakes at lunch and dinner and usually chocolate ice cream. We went to the Romantic, Cuban and Italian a la carts which all had a limited menu with average food but you do get served in more pleasant environment with wine or beer.

The staff are friendly and accommodating and there is entertainment by the animation staff all day long. They are operating on limited capacity so rather than having shows in the theatre each night they perform in the courtyard beside the lobby. We did see a Cuba and International show on the stage and a Water show in the pool and all were well done. This and the beach raised my review to a 4.

The Beach is outstanding and once the waves settled down it was crystal clear. There were lots of beach chairs and you could access them after 9am, although some do place towels on them to reserve them prior to going to breakfast. Looking at the water the area to the left has a mostly sandy bottom. To the right is where the Catamarans go out but they have a limited supply and you have to go out with one of the attendants who sometimes paddle when winds are low. You have to walk up to the beach bar and there is music, dance, exercise and games led by staff.

Staff appreciate tips and/or gifts and we brought some small kids toys, toothpaste, but the real winner seemed to be M&M peanuts.

First our room was wrong, asked for a king bed and got two doubles. They corrected the second day. Beds are so uncomfortable we considered sleeping on the floor. Washrooms are not cleaned regularly or stocked with toilet paper. Food was average. Ran out of butter, some alcohol, towels one day too.
Such a lack of beach chairs that you had to be at the beach or pool by dawn (not exaggerating) to be able to get a chair.
The people were great, especially our maid Regla was fantastic.

There are a number of tours available from your rep. Although, if you want to see something else, do your homework before you go and speak to the rep when you arrive. For example, the wife and I wanted to visit Vinales, (it's beautiful, look it up!). So we spoke to our Sunwing rep, who was fantastic, and she had us booked on a two day tour which included a day and night in Havana, with the Copacabana if you wanted, all meals with beverage, a day in Vinales including a guided tour of a cigar factory, river caves and painted cliffs, and transportation with accommodation for 2, all for under $700USD. So check what you want to do, and if you want to do it, they will make it happen, and enjoy your trip.

What upgrade would give me a room in a quiet area with a good view
Answer from John Krysa
Seba Beach, Canada5 contributions10 helpful votes
For a quiet room with a view, best bets are in buildings 14, 15, and 19. For just quiet, buildings 1 and 2, and 20 to 23. For quietest, get a room facing away from the promenade. The buildings are numbered 1 to about 26 or so.

It depends on what you want. If you spend plenty of time at the pool, then most definitely, you can walk right out to the pool. Plus, if you are in buildings near there, it is a short walk to the buffet, restaurant, bar and theater.
