We were visiting at the turn of March and April for 10 days. We didn't expect this to be Aman Resorts of course, but we were not surprised to say at least. The reviews about the food was unfortunately not lying. There is no possibility to choose from various hams, cheeses etc.. They provide around 3 types of each, I personally didn't tried the ham at all as it doesn't look like anything I'm use back home in Europe. You are not allowed to pick those by your own but must ask the staff to put it in your plate, after couple of days we were really tired to ask them 3 times to "add" usually they will pick like 1-2 slides max. and put it to your plate, such a joke for so called "5 stars hotel". They also have literally two frying pans so you can imagine the lines in the morning if you want a fried egg/omelettes. Personally I gave up after 2 days, I didn't want to spend 20 minutes in a line for my boyfriend to be waiting for me hungry. If you want to drink something, you have to ask, no one approach you proactively, even though you ask, be prepped to remind them after 5-10 minutes as it's taking while for them to bring you the drink (no matter the occupancy, once we had a really late breakfast around 9:45 and there was almost no one in the bufet, it take them the same amount of time as usual). There is NO possibility to make yourself a coffee or tea from the machine in the morning by your own. They have some selection of "juices" but if you are used for Granini or even Rauch, you will be disappointed. It is possible to have a fresh juice from the fruit they have there. But don't be too exited, the fruits and seafood was huge disappointing. We thought it will be plenty of that over there. No, calamari, if you were lucky, and the fruit was the same everyday - pineapple, cantaloupe (or it looked like that) and one more exotic type of fruit which I'm not familiar, as there is no label, I can't really say. The a-la-carte restaurant - TexMex - whoever is responsible for this obviously never even saw this type of cuisine nor had eaten it. It has nothing in common with Tex Mex. We wanted order margarita, hahaha not a change. Sakura was fine, but I don't rate the sushi, they really don't know how to make it. The best one was surprisingly cubanian one. We went there our last evening and were pretty sad we left it as the least option, because we actually enjoyed the food and the service. Otherwise the servise is really not that great as everyone talking about here. Specially in buffet, you ask something and it seems they have the whole time in the world to bring it. We had two different VISA debit cards, each of them from different bank. Not a single success when we tried to pay with it. It was told us the internet connection is not working. I do understand it may be un stable but c'mon, we tried to pay multiple times, different days, different times. Don't even bother to bring the cards with you, just take a cash. Positive was the beach, you were always able to find the spot even though we were going at 11:00 and it is really nice area. The room itself needs to be repaired, we had to be careful with the handle from bathroom because it was falling off a bit, the foil on the door from the minibar was peeled off. But the housekeeping itself was fine. We wanted to upgrade to level when check-in as it was strongly advised here in reviews but they were fully booked. So do it in advance if you want to have certainty. We considered the Malia Las Americas as it is on the same area and looking back, I'm really sad we choose this one. I did understand this won't be like 5 stars hotels in Mexico but we still expected more and were hopping people in the review exaggerates.

My wife and I visited Melia Varadero from April 3rd to 10th, and what a beautiful week it was. For context, we stayed here with the Level package and had an ocean view room. We stayed at 3 other Melia's before in Cuba, but this one was truly special. Firstly I must admit this has to be our favourite resort to date. We have stayed at Royaltons, iberostars, Valentins, Sanctuary, Angsana, and this one overall was superior due to the Level staff, management, and the offerings of the upgrade. First, thank you to DG Marco for his warm welcome to my wife and I and providing us with such a memorable week. The Level upgrade was a great plus as they made our a la carte reservations, provided us with any info we needed and the best part for us... the Level lounge and the Tex Mex resto for breakfast and lunch. A special thank you goes to the Level Team, who to name a few were Orlaida Carlos, Yanet, Indania and of course Boris who showed us around the resort and explained in detail all the services provided to us. The service they provided us throughout our stay was fantastic. LOVED the Level bar team: Eva, Luisito, Abraham, Eglis, Yainery, and Mini. We enjoyed our cappuccinos, all alcohol drinks, and snacks in this lovely lounge. LUISITO is an absolute star here. His personality is infectious, and he makes amazing cocktails and coffees, and his card tricks were the best ever. We enjoyed our time up here and had some great conversations with other guests. Also loved the staff at the Tex Mex for all meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Special thanks to Contino, Abey the Chef, Elaine, and Lorenley. They made our meals so inviting and special. The lobster will always be a great memory for me. So so good!! A real treat! Also, thanks to Dianeisy for making our 29th Anniversary dinner so special. To our most lovely maid, Yanetsis, who treated us with such special care all week. She responded to all of our requests and kept the beautiful room we had spotless, and well stocked at all times. The food here is very good. We did not miss anything throughout our week. All a la cartes we ate at were all very good. We just missed the Japanese as we've done that numerous times before. Buffet had ample choices for any taste. Loved the pasta choices, fresh salmon, chicken, and pork. The snack bar was basic but good, and the paella was very tasty. The cuban celebration was nice, with lots of food but very crowded and perhaps could have had 2 areas set up to alleviate long lineups. Bar staff everywhere were great and attentive. Lobby bar staff had amazing personalities, especially Roberto. Liked Beatriz and Elainis, too. The beach here is amazing 10/10. The views from the impeccably kept grounds and Cliff area are picture worthy. Lots of seating everywhere. Just wish they had music on the beach. After we left, we heard they did. Hope that continues. Need some dancing down there too from the entertainment team. Weather was sunny 🌞 hot and made for different beach days, depending on the wind. Seaweed rolled in after a cold front, which is normal but sadly with garbage, but it took 2 days to tidy up, which wasn't the best. It is, however, a most amazing beach with ample chairs and if you need umbrellas, they we available, which was great. Didn't need to get up early here to get loungers at the beach. I found the beach bar and pool bar okay but not stocked for Level guests that well, so we walked to the lobby or snack bar for sparkling wine, wines, or other drinks. Loved the seating areas throughout. It's really beautiful artistry and so relaxing with stunning ocean site lines. The sunset pictures were priceless. The shows ...enertainment were nice. I just wished they had that amazing rockband that we've seen at other resorts. Sadly, I missed the aquatic show due to the weather on its slotted night. To end this a huge shoutout to all the incredible management, the most generous hard-working staff who touched every part of our vacation. The front desk who welcomed us so amazingly. We recommend this hotel to anyone. The beauty of this resort is one we won't forget. We hear that they are upgrading all rooms and should be done in the next year or so. This is a true gem architecturely, an old beauty being restored. The 5th floor Level area is already there. Melia Varadero, we love you all, and this will be our new resort of choice in the future for all our visits. Our new home away from home in Varadero. Again thanks to Marco, Oscar and Boris and the entire team. Best regards Chef Oliver and Loulou Ottawa Canada 🇨🇦

We were a little apprehensive about going to Cuba this year considering all the comments re shortages and inconveniences. Boy were we wrong. Great time at the hotel - get the Level package (it is more than worth it). The beach staff, the staff in the Tex Mex restaurant and who can forget Luisito and the team in the Level lounge. Food, wine and booze were great and plenty. The bed was really comfy as well, I actually slept in a few days. One further note - there is no need to play the towel game here. Many days we got to the beach after 11 and still found a nice shady spot! The beach guys work very hard! Would stay again.

Let me start by saying that we have been to Cuba a few times before and have travelled to many other countries. We have stayed at luxury resorts, moderate level resorts and even a few low end ones. We have also stayed at other Melia resorts and all with The Level. This trip we were looking for a tropical getaway and at a reasonable price. We got exactly what we wanted and so much more. I will break down my review into a few categories. Arrival... We arrived by private transportation so I have no idea if this resort would normally welcome guests at the entrance. We were not, which really makes no difference to us. The only thing was that we walked in and had no idea where The Level check in was. There is a rather small sign for The Level (it has guest names on it) that could easily be missed as it's tucked in right beside the door, there is also a table in that corner with self serve sparkling wine. This kind of made me laugh a bit as in our past experiences we have never seen self serve welcome drinks. As we were looking around and noticed the little sign a staff member asked us if we were The Level. He motioned to wait a minute. We waited more than 5 minutes, he did not return and no one else approached us. Finally we went over to the main check in and asked where The Level check in was. That lady got on the phone and called someone. She said the concierge would be right down to get us. The concierge did come but it took a little time. We later discovered that she had to come from the 5th floor and the elevators are pretty slow. Once she greeted us we were then offered a quick tour of the main floor which included where to find the restaurants, bars and services. From there we were taken up to the 5th floor which is exclusive for The Level....all rooms, the concierge desk and the lounge are all there. We were quickly checked in, set up with a dinner reservation, given our bracelets and then taken to our room. All services and inclusions were well explained. Room... Our room was very clean and well set up. Nothing really looked worn or in need of replacement. We had a king sized bed, small sofa bed, table with two chairs, coffee maker (with supplies for coffee/tea including cups and drinking glasses), standard size safe, iron/ironing board and large TV. The bed and pillows were actually very comfortable, a nice medium. All the linens were crispy and clean. Beach towels are in the room for The Level. There were lots of hangers in the closet and shelves but not much in the way of drawers. We never use drawers so we did not care. Each side of the bed has a nightstand with a drawer and a reading lamp. There are hanging pegs on the wall above a luggage bench. The bench is large enough for two large suitcases. There is also a fairly long counter top beside the coffee maker. So lots of space to leave your things. There is also a mini fridge stocked with two beers, pops and one large bottle of water. I'm not sure who replenishes the fridge but the housekeeper has the water. So funny....we did not drink the beers or pop (we kept medication in the fridge) but we noticed a few days in that one of the bottles of pop was missing. It was not replaced and then a few days later the other bottle of pop was also gone. Our room also had a small balcony with a table, two chairs and a rack for drying bathing suits. The bathroom I found to be dark but aside from that there were enough towels, a decent supply of shower gel/shampoo, a personal sized package of tissue and a single roll of TP. The water was always very hot, with great pressure. We generally don't have housekeeping everyday as we just don't require it....we keep things tidy and like to give the housekeeper a little break. The days we did have her in, the bath towels were left on the bed shaped into creatures that resembled people. There were flowers left with them and also our personal belongings were included in the displays. They were cute but I will say that I did not like the fact that our belongings had been included. It felt like our things were being looked through. Most items had been left, by us, sitting out in plain sight but there were a couple of items that were not. I ABSOLUTELY do not believe that there was any ill intent. Be advised if you have towel creatures on your bed, those are ALL the towels from the bathroom and you have to dismantle and take them to the bathroom. Dining... First off, many people comment on shortages and food quality. Only once in the course of a week were we told there was an item on the menu not available. Only once there was an item we were served that we could not eat. All our meals were quite good, in fact better than we expected. Twice we were served meat that was raw in the middle...not rare, actually raw. We were not upset, just sent it back to be cooked some more, but our servers seemed to be horrified. We only went to the buffet once which was breakfast on our first morning. Personally, I do not like buffets at all. I have seen far too many people doing gross things. They have several stations but all seemed to have the same things. There are multiple stations for cook to order omelettes but the lines were really long. Overall, I felt that the buffet has a ton of room for improvement. The tables did not feel clean and the servers seemed to have huge sections so it was hard to get their attention. The buffet is my only really strong negative about this resort. The Cuban restaurant is a nice place to dine in the evening. It's outdoor and has pretty lighting. You are going to have a couple of cats hanging out, begging for food....for me it was literally just like my dog at home, sitting at my feet staring up at me with huge sad eyes. The staff were very nice, food wise it was fine but left no impression. I don't even remember what we ate. They also serve lunch every day but there is no menu, it's only Paella. We tried in once and it was very good. The only thing was that there was almost no protein in it. It was all rice. We would have loved to have gone and had it again but being diabetic, a huge bowl of rice is not a good idea. The Japanese restaurant was excellent! We went twice. As far as the show it's the typical thing....flames, rice shaped in a heart, the flip of something into someone's mouth. They start with a soup course which was the only thing all week we just could not eat. Second course is sushi. Then the main which is chicken, fish, rice and mixed veg. The second time we went we had the same chef but the meal was slightly different. I feel like it might have been better. The International restaurant was also good. We also went here twice. The staff are excellent. Food was good. The second time we had dinner it was on the recommendation of other guests we met at the resort. They had said the BBQ chicken was excellent, so we went back and had the BBQ chicken....yes, they were right. The TexMex restaurant staff are outstanding. Everyone there was so friendly and attentive. There was something I asked for that they did not have but they went out to get it. I certainly did not expect anyone to do that and I told them not to but they insisted. We also had dinner here twice but we added the lobster the second time. It was really good and well worth the money. The Tex Mex is also open for breakfast/lunch for The Level guests only. This is where we mainly had breakfast. It was really nice to sit outdoors with a view of the ocean every morning. The menu is small but there is a good variety...hot items, pastries, yogurt, fruit, crepes. They also bring large platers of cold meat, cheese, bread and will replenish as often as you want. We never did make it for lunch. The 24hr restaurant we went twice for breakfast and once for lunch. The menu is divided up by time slots. They have a coffee bar for cappuccinos etc. One thing to note is that they don't have a menu to hand you...it's a QR code which I love but the Wifi is very hit or miss (mainly miss) so if you can't open the QR you are left with having what the server tells you. One morning for breakfast they had a little mini buffet station set up with coffee/tea, fruit/veg, pastries, meats/cheeses. They also had this set up at lunch on the day we were there. The food we ordered was very good. There is also a restaurant/bar that is outdoors right beside the lobby...I have no idea what it's called. Everything is white...white walls, white tables and white chairs. They serve lunch but then in the evening it's a bar. The menu is mainly pizza and pasta. We had pizzas the day we arrived at the resort. The pasta plates that we saw were enormous. It's the main area that people hang out in the evening. The Level lounge was the place we visited a lot. They have a small snack buffet set up...meats, cheeses, toast, pickles and a few desserts. There is some premium brand alcohol at the bar. The staff there are very quick to tell you to sit and relax while they get you anything you want. We went every morning to get some sparkling water. After the second time the staff started chilling it for us and had it ready everyday after that. We would also stop in there on our way back to our room in the afternoon. Some days we skipped lunch and just got a plate of meats and cheeses with a coffee/tea other days it was just a light snack before going to a late dinner. Every time we were in there we were warmly greeted and well taken care off. Food wise everything was always fresh and stocked. There is a grill out on the beach at lunch. They serve burgers, hotdogs, pork and chicken on a bun. We had burgers, chicken and pork. All were good. They had condiments available...ketchup, mustard, garlic sauce and some other type of spicy sauce. One day they had some lettuce/cucumber but not the next day. The grill is charcoal so from time to time the cooking has to stop while they add more coals and get it going. I was a little concerned to see a large pan of raw chicken sitting out right on the edge of the grill....not chilled in any way. Bars... There are bars all over the place. In the lobby there is the piano bar, the white bar right beside it outside, the 24hr, the pool bar (it's not a swim up), the juice bar beside the pool and the beach bar. Also, The Level lounge. The bartenders will make you pretty much anything you want. Sometimes one bar will have a certain item while another one does not. We noticed this mainly with mint. The juice bar beside the pool makes really good pina coladas. They will also add shots to any fruit juice they have...watermelon and vodka is nice. Entertainment... Every night there is live music in the lobby area. There were shows every night as well but we only went once. They don't start until after 9:45pm. We went on a second night but the weather was bad so they were having it indoors and the room they were using had a really strong smell of mold so we left. During the day the animation staff were around but we really didn't see them much. Granted we are not really interested so it is possible that we just didn't notice them. What we did see was a daily pool volleyball game and dance lessons on the beach in the morning. We felt that overall this is a quiet resort. The Level concierge... We didn't really require much but every time we did go to them for something they were all very nice and very accommodating. Mainly we asked for dinner reservation, aside from that is was a question or two. One evening we stopped to ask where to find the International restaurant and instead of just telling us, we were escorted there. Beach/Pool... The pool area is a little small but you have to remember this is not a large resort. There is an upper and lower section in the pool. The lower section is more suitable for children. The water was a little cold but still ok. There are lots of chairs all around the pool but not much in the way of cabanas or full cover (palapas/umbrella type structures). There are lots of areas with partial shade but it's all trees. The trees do make for a really beautiful atmosphere. I'm a person that can not sit in the sun and I was a little worried about the lack of proper coverage but we made it work. To get to the beach you have to go down a fair number of stairs. It would be very difficult, if not impossible for someone with mobility issues. The beach is very wide with soft white sand. It is exactly what you would hope for in a gorgeous beach. The water is very shallow and clear. There is a section for The Level with beach concierge. They will get you umbrellas, chairs and get you all set up. They will also get you drinks. If you are into long beach walks that is not going to happen here. The resort sits on a rock and the beach is beside that. At the end of the the beach is a large building (it's got a restaurant and bar) that also sits on a rock....it's maybe a 5 minute walk from end to end. There is also beach on the other side of the resort but we never went that way so I have no idea if you could walk further or even if you can walk that way at all...it is the Sol resort. One thing to note, there is no washroom near the beach. You have to go all the way back between the pool and main building. This washroom was not all that clean, an attempt was being made but it was rough. While we were there, a few days in, they closed the men's side for repair. After which, they propped open the door to the ladies side and men were just in and out while there were ladies inside. NOT at all ok! Also, on several occasions I witnessed a waiter coming out of a stall and not washing his hands. Wifi... LOL...we each got connected a couple of times in the first day or two but that was it. It always looked like it was connected but we could not open anything. We never got the resort QR code to open. We tried eveything...connect, disconnect, reconnect. Power off the phone and power back up. Nothing worked. The concierge tried to help with no luck. Now realistically this is not a huge issue but I had some business issues to keep up with while I was away and was expecting to be able to do that. All I needed was access to my email but even the few times I was connected my email would not open. I tried multiple ways to get in and none worked but oddly, I could get my service providers website to open. In the end I turned on my own service and data for one day so that I could check on my business. It looked like everyone had internet access but I have no idea if it was the resort wifi or if they were using their own service. Staff... In general all the staff we encountered were very nice. Of course some nicer than others. There were a few that really seemed that they did not want to be there but they were not unpleasant in anyway. We all have bad days and that's what I'm going to attribute that to. I've already mentioned The Level concierge were excellent. All of them very nice and very helpful. The lounge staff were the same. The a la carte servers were all excellent. The lobby bar servers were very busy but they did a good job at getting around. The only staff interaction we had that we found uncomfortable was when we found a phone and went to turn it in. I went to sit in a chair and saw a phone. I picked it up and sat it on the table while we were there hoping the owner would come back. We told the bartender and he said if no one comes back to take it to the front desk. We were there for about an hour and when we were leaving we took the phone to the front desk. We had to give our name, room number and were asked a few other questions. It felt like we were being accused of something. She said that security needed all that info yet she wrote nothing down. I've never in my life turned in a found item and been grilled about it. A couple of random things... The resort in general is very clean and well kept. You will regularly see cleaning staff busy at work. The washrooms in public spaces are cleaned constantly. The stalls are oddly dark though. The men's/ladies are not clearly marked. The signs are hard to see and only show a silhouette. Look carefully before you enter. The elevators are a bit of a pain. My experience is based only on the ones that are closest to the main entrance...there are other ones over near the bar. There are 3 single elevators and each has it's own button. So what ends up happening is that people push all three buttons, as a result you end up stopping on every single floor going up and down even when no one is getting on or off. I was of the impression from hotel info that one elevator was an express for The Level going between ground and 5th floor only. This is not the case but it really should be. We had no issues at all with language. We understand some Spanish but speak less. I don't think we met any staff that didn't speak English. I had expected to use the translator app (LOL...couldn't anyway without Wifi) but it was never needed. There are nice cabanas beside the pool that over look the ocean. They are only for use by guests booked in The Level suites. The cabanas are numbered and there is a sign up that says The Level. There is kids club that we walked past everyday but it was always empty. In general though, we saw very few kids at the resort. The kids club did look like they had lots to do. There is a little store onsite that has a pretty good assortment of items. We took one quick walk through but didn't really pay any attention to prices. It's probably safe to assume the prices are high. If you have forgotten something there is a mall right next door to the resort that has a little bit of everything. You should be able to find it there. In the back there is a craft market with souvenir type stuff. Unfortunately we witnessed a group of women from our own country being difficult and disrespectful to the staff on more than one occasion. In fact every time we saw this group they were being awful to someone. We had zero interactions with them but at one point they shot some ugly remark at us too. No idea what they thought we had done. If you are the ladies (probably shouldn't call you ladies) that arrived on March 17th decked out in tacky dollar store St Patrick's day decorations. Shame on you! Your behaviour was entitled, which you are not. You treated the staff like they were your servants, which they are not. Overall, we really enjoyed our week. On past trips to Cuba a week was long enough but not this time. We should have stayed longer! We would return to Melia Varadero in a heart beat and would recommend it to almost anyone without reservation.

My husband and I spent two weeks in this beautiful hotel from March 14 to 28. This was our third time there, and we were not disappointed to come again. It became our home away from home. This time, we stayed at the Level and enjoyed the extra services like going for lunch to a Tex-Mex restaurant and other a-la-card restaurants for our diners. We also enjoyed the main buffet restaurant, where there was a good selection of food, and each day there was a particular topic, like sushi day, salad day, etc. The beach improved significantly compared to last year. It was very wide and sandy, and there were many new sunbeds and umbrellas. The beach attendants put umbrellas where you needed them. There was no need to wake up early and reserve a lounger, as many were always available. The views of the ocean from every corner of this resort are truly magnificent. That blue-eyed colour is out of this world. As Level guests, we had the pleasure of enjoying the bar on our floor. The cappuccinos that Eva and Luisito prepared for us were simply the best. Their warm smiles and friendly conversations made our mornings even more delightful. At some point, we even decided to forgo breakfast elsewhere and enjoyed it in our bar, savouring the delicious food and the pleasant company. On our last day, Luisito made me a frappuccino that was so good that I had to come back the following year only for that. The food choices in this resort were abundant. We never felt that we were missing something. During our stay, there were no eggs, but we did not miss them at all, as there were always many other choices available. I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to everyone who works there and makes this hotel special. A special thank you goes to the Level Team: Orlaida, Carlos, Yanet, Indania, Leachet and Damaris. The service they provide is always of high quality. Thank you to the Level bar team: Eva, Luisito, Abraham, Eglis, Yainery and Mini. We enjoyed our cappuccinos, drinks and continental breakfast! Thank you to the food and beverages manager, Xavier! Gracias Señor! Deberían retenerte el mayor tiempo posible. ¡Eres maravilloso! Thank you to a servant from the main restaurant, Rigoberto and his partner, Iris, Julia from the main reception, and, of course, the community managers, Lianne and Yeni! You are special! Thank you so much, ladies and gentlemen! We will be back! PS: As our return flight was delayed at the last minute, Sunwing sent us to Melia Las Americas for the night and the next day so we could compare these two resorts. MLA was good, but the Melia Varadero is better. I will not trade it. MVA, see you soon.

We experienced no shortages like mentioned at other resorts. We received a renovated room, which was amazing. Everything is right by the beach, clean and always enjoyed our meals. Oscar in guest services was an amazing help. Friendly staff everywhere, never had to wait long for a drink and coffee was awesome. We plan on going back, we had such an amazing trip. Senior management keeps this hotel running smooth. Beach was just brilliant.

We just returned from a beautiful week of relaxation at this amazing resort. Melià Varadero is a very nice hotel, with a different and captivating design. We received a very comfortable and renovated room on the 4th floor, with new mattresses, kept spotless clean each day, with fresh towels. The beach is absolutely stunning and is where we spent most of our days, also because right above there is an area with a bar and grill, which is the perfect option for a quick lunch. Also the Las Brasas restaurant, next to the pool, where they offer a delicious charcoal paella, Is ideal for having lunch in a swimsuit. A big shout out to Daylet and Wendy from the Reception, always so gentle and smiling.
