We did not have a great check-in experience as there was not clean bedding available and the keys to my room were given at 7:00 PM instead of 4:00 PM. Food choices are very limited, have in mind that resources are limited and they do what they can with what they have, but it that made the experience less enjoyable as the food was the same over and over. Many items from breakfast were served at lunch and so on... Food on display does not have any type of lids or cover and there are many many flies all over the food. There are not any kind of juices available at any bar or restaurant in the resort, only no-brand name sodas. The alcohol selection is very limited and the quality is the cheapest you can imagine, not good. Some of the rooms smelled moldy. There were water leaks in every floor (I took the stairs many times) as only 2/4 elevators were functional. The beach and the staff are a 10/10.

The resort was beautiful. It had everything I needed to relax with my family. It was really close to the shore so we got to go to the beach often. The view from our room was amazing. The service was also great. Everyone was really helpful and friendly. I loved their sweets as well :). Overall a great experience.

I stayed at Melia Marina Varadero for a week and had an absolutely wonderful experience. They took care of us from the moments we arrived at the resort. It made our experience extremely pleasurable with all the entertainment and activity they provided. Every day we enjoyed nice fresh food with a lot of variety. My rooms every day cleaned and fixed. All the staff was friendly and lovely. Big Thanks for Mr Eduardo and all the staff that was trying there best to keep our trip special and for being professional with there service. Off course we will repeated again.

Absolutely horrible! We were booked to stay here for 7 days and after 1 night we transferred to another resort and are so thankful that we did. No air conditioning, no food, pool was DISGUSTINGLY dirty also pool doesn’t open till 10 am! Anytime we called down to front desk to ask about AC no one would answer the phones. Customer service is absolutely terrible. I would avoid this resort at all costs

only one out 4 elevators is working. And no light in the stairs which can be dangerous for some people, I saw people using their flashlight of their cell phone. toilet in the room can't not flush. hotel did not provide clean towels at all. only fold used towels and put back into shelf. I even put them on the floor for the cleaning lady to know they must be changed, she folded them back and put them back on the shelf for me. This is horrible. I was told there is a problem with laundry, and it might be fixed in month lool.if you ask to speak to a manger or someone who speaks English they look at you as if you are from another planet. They supposedly run out of food all the time but, are too lazy to provide the food always saying we don’t have sorry lady. Snack bar is very terrible, almost no food all the time, every time we go as for cheese pizza, they tell us no more or come back at 8pm. When we go back at night, they tell us no pizza. Horrible and rude staff at the snack bar. They just decide whenever they want to make the food, no management. No beach towel available to be changed every day, they tell you come back tomorrow, and when your return they tell you not today. I changed the beach towels once in 7 days. This hotel has lots of local, I have nothing again them if they are polite and respectful. They are always yelling in the pool, you can not even have time to relax quietly, they scream and talk loudly, and they don’t like to wait in lines for food at the buffet. Long wait at buffet up to 20 minutes or more. Food is bad, everything is with ham or pork, even a la carte staff are rude, and food is bad and salty. You can reserve restaurant a la carte in the morning, I go early, and they tell me it is already full. Nothing makes sense. No ice, no pina colada I even asked for Fanta and was told no Fanta today. Very bad. Beach is very nice; staff are nice at the beach. The snack bar is closed near the beach. Snack bar has no food, the only choice is the buffet that opens from 1 to 3 and half of it is closed. No fresh fruits at all like mango, bananas, etc. but always the same food every singe day. Please do not stay at this hotel.

We did not have enough food,no ice. Fire alarm goes off every day and night which is a disturbance to every body. No lights on so we had to use our phones flashlight. No beach towels for 4 days. Toilet paper shortage, 1 out of 4 elevators worked. Lots of water leaks in hallways. Been there 4 years ago and it was nice but now it is not.

We arrived in the evening, four people with two rooms on “the Level” . We went for dinner at 8.15pm and left at 10.30pm with no food. Day two was better as we were given lobster as a sweetener. The chef cooked it himself as he had promised to. It was over cooked. Start again…… Beach is amazing, enough sun loungers, pool is decent apart from the acceptance of guests with what almost looks like barrels instead of cups getting them filled at the pool bar. Seems to be a thing. I would stop this if I were manager and encourage people just to be conventional with a cup from the bar. Make it fair for everyone! Rooms were ok, not worth the price paid though. Food in the main restaurant presented us with an odour that was less than pleasant! Frankly, Foul! There is a real shortage of “stuff” plates, salt, pepper, butter etc… the worst thing of all is the care shown by some of the people. A good and practical example would be me asking for two beers, being told I could only get one as another guest will be asking for one and “the level” restaurant only had two that evening. Another would be that I asked for ice in a drink and was told there was none in the hotel, 30 mins later the one particular team member was asked by another guest and somehow made the effort to get it from another bar. Most orders taken had no correlation with what would arrive at the table. If the kitchen had taken an order for four meals the server would bring three and inform at the point of serving the meal that plate four would not be served as they had run out of food no alternative would be offered at any point. On one occasion I had a fully plated meal, served but the fish was still rock solid frozen, no idea how someone could actually put a dish together and not notice a fully frozen piece of fish. Crockery and cutlery were filthy on a daily basis with visible food smears and dirt. The level restaurant toilet had lovely flowers on a daily basis by the sink but regularly no toilet roll. The tables in the restaurant had a glass top layer most had large rough chunks broken at the edges. There was also an unexplained and irritating alarm that went off all day every day, sometimes at 3am and for long periods. The lifts were out of action for days at a time, the service lifts obviously didn’t work which would explain why the pig carcasses were in the gusts lifts with dripping blood left in the lobby and lift. On a positive note their is a doctor’s practice within the complex. The doctor was excellent and treated one of my daughters for a serious ear infection. The pool is visibly dirty and they regularly close the pool toilets situated in the pool level lobby prior to the pool daily closure time. This ruined my daughters holiday as she had to keep out of the pool and sea for the remainder of her holiday. To exit the hotel on the Marina side their is a serious safety issue with water leaking out of a downstairs plant room that had a visible layer continuously of water that spilled out to the exit lobby. Yes there was a small janitorial caution water sign my wife walked round the edges as best she could and nearly had a nasty fall she had to clutch the rough cement wall and get help from our daughter to remain on her feet. This exit should have been closed. The stairs have a lot of cracked tiles and some levels have no lighting at all. The wall signage saying what stair level you are on is either there completely missing or lying on the floor. Not great for safety if you are trapped in a stairwell and can’t tell the emergency services what floor you are on. For the 6th floor the corridor is very dark at night due to very few lights working in that particular area again a safety issue. There were some staff in the hotel who were excellent and truly hospitable, the lady at the pool bar, the day trip advisor in the hotel lobby, the beach buggy drivers and the older gentleman who worked in the level he cared greatly about providing a great service and was very friendly and professional. Happy to answer any questions or clarify on anything above. I am sure there will be the obligatory “sorry to hear you were disappointed, we pride ourselves…….. Etc etc etc. you do not. This place is woeful. Happy to take this offline with Melia head office also. Frankly, I did like the brand until now but will never use again due to my experience here.

Fully honest, raw review here from someone who has been to Cuba 30+ times and absolutely love this country. Positives: 1. Room was amazing. Very clean, cool, fresh linens, the maid service was impeccable. The water pressure was amazing, the tub was clean and the water was hot. 2. The staff, when available, were very kind, that true Cuban hospitality was there, they treat you like family. 3. Beaches were pristine, the energy of the entertainment staff was insane, they were giving it their all at all hours. Negatives: 1. The food. Cuba is a great place for a delicious culinary experience if you come with the intention of eating Cuban food. The beans, rice, pork, chicken, fruit, fish, and cheese is always delicious. Obviously there is an attempt made to mimic an “American” style buffet, but with the limited resources they have (not their fault) it becomes extremely repetitive and the quality is low. I wish they would lean into their traditional foods more, as those are always cooked to perfection and are so yummy. That being said, during our stay there was quite the food shortage, this included no salt, pepper, butter, jam, and the deli meats were scarce. I don’t put the blame on the staff, but on other guests who take several plates to their table, only to leave half of it. It’s rude and wasteful, but other’s actions can’t be helped. 2. The snack bar is open all day, or is supposed to be, but little resource goes into maintaining and stocking it. On several occasions we would ask what they were serving, only to be told they didn’t have gas for the stoves/fryers, or any food at all. 3. The bars were stocked with tons of liquor, the problem was the limited mixes. Often there was no soda water, cola, juice, or ice. (Once again, no blame on staff, they have no control over imports and did their best to make due with what they had) 4. The general state of the resort. Obviously this is low season, so not everything will be open, but the a la carte options are so limited, most of the restaurants are closed. There are parts of the resort that are in complete disrepair, with black mold on the lobby ceiling, water flooding the lower levels, and the fire alarms going off constantly throughout the night. The elevators also take a very long time (10-15 mins in some cases) to respond to the button being pressed, so if accessibility is a major issue for you, I wouldn’t consider this place the ideal stay at the moment. 5. Discrepancies in charges/cost. We requested a late check out, as the standard checkout time is 12pm and our transfer to the airport wasn’t until 6pm. We wanted the opportunity to have some air conditioning and a place to change should we want to go to the pool/beach. We were told it was 11 pesos an hour to do so. No problem. On the day of checkout we go to pay for the extended use of the room, only to be told the price has changed to 44 usd an hour. Quite the jump. I asked to speak to the lady who originally quoted us, only to have her tell us again it would be 11 pesos an hour. The gentleman next to her chewed her out in front of me for a good minute before telling me she was wrong, and that it was $44 usd/hr. I asked how that could be possible, when some friends we were travelling with paid $11 CAD per hour, and he said “$44 usd/hr. that’s the rate for you.” That didn’t sit right with me at all. 6. The higher ups will take tips from the bar tenders and other staff, so be weary. When you tip, do it quietly and as discreetly as possible. Management will come up to them and take the cash out of their cups. I have NEVER seen this before in Cuba, it was extremely disheartening because for some, those tips mean more food for their children. When management isn’t around staff will openly disclose this to you, as they are fed up also. I understand that Cuba has been directly affected by global affairs lately, and that every dollar counts, but it’s disgusting to see this type of treatment. All in all, this is not the Cuba I grew up with, the one that I considered a second home. While the people are wonderful, I would in my honest opinion steer clear of the island until they get back on their feet somewhat. If this was my first time here I would never return, so thank god for my prior experience experiences.
