We had a great time at iberostar varadero. It is the perfect place to enjoy the beach and the sunshine. We had an awesome romantic dinner by the beach and the drinks and the food were the best we’ve had in Varadero taking into account the situation in which many other resorts find themselves right now.

I have so much to say about my stay at Iberostar Selection Varadero and my recent trip to Cuba (first time). First, here is a list of essentials: 1. Bug Spray and Afterbite, Hydrocortisone cream, or Calamine lotion - there nasty sand flies that come out at dusk. Often referred to as "NoSeeUm's" because you don't see them. They travel in swarms. The itch is ridiculous and the bites make it look like you've got the measles. 2. Sunscreen - this is a given for every sun getaway. I didn't find the sun scorching, but this is an essential. 3. Toilet paper or flushable wipes - It is often that toilet paper is not available, and sometimes, finding a seat on the toilet is a luxury. Some places you will also have to pay to use the toilet - $1 USD will do the trick. 4. 220V plug adapter. There are maybe 1 or 2 outlets that have 120V but, the electricity is very weak. At times, it seemed like the electricity was rolling, rather than having a continuous flow. This and the Wi-Fi will test your patience. The standard price for anything seemed to be $20 USD. At the Iberostar, you can take a taxi to the market for a flat $20USD regardless of how many in the car (4-5 passengers max). The catamaran is free, however, if you want to snorkel, it will be $20USD. If you are wanting an old car, like a Desoto or a Convertible, it's also $20, but be aware, they could breakdown on you and you may have to hitch a ride with another one...you may or may not have to pay for the transfer. If you are one that requires Wi-Fi, don't count on the free one they offer at the hotel. It works 70% of the time, if you're you in the lobby. The username and password they give you to use in your room, is printed on thermal paper, so by the second day, you won't be able to read it - I suggest you write it down or take a screenshot. If you are able to get Wi-Fi in the room, then you are one of the elite, as it is virtually impossible to get. I tried to use my cellular, after being frustrated with trying to connect with the Wi-Fi and even then, my Rogers Roam from Home would not connect. As for the food offered on the resort - Everyone seemed to like the Japanese Yakiniku restaurant. Personally, I don't like it but it you like cheesy jokes, stir-fry and a "chef" performing with the food, then, you will definitely like it. DO NOT go to the Mediterranean restaurant - horrible, that's all I have to say - well, not only me, but 36 others in our group, also gave this one a great big X! The Bosque is the Gourmet Restaurant - this one for me was the best. Right amount of portions - starts with an appetizer, then soup, main and then dessert. If you like sweet desserts, you won't find any in Cuba. The dessert portion of any restaurant, including the buffet, was not up to par. It looked good, but lacked taste. The only saving grace was the ice cream - very good! The buffet was standard buffet food - a little bit of everything. I was warned about their bland food, but nothing was bland (except for the dessert); actually, it was sometimes too salty. If you are allergic to shrimp, as I am, do not have the rice, as it is cooked with the water they use to boil shrimp. Every morning, there is the standard egg grill, where you get fried eggs or omelet. Not too many choices for omelet fillings, but suffices. If you love bacon, you will find that they are semi-cooked. For those of you who like crispy bacon, just ask the chef at the grill to crisp it up - or there's a microwave that you can use that also does the trick. If you like toast, then I would cut the bread and then stick it in the toaster, go get your fried eggs, and then come back - and the bread will still be making its way through the toaster. There was never a line up at the buffet. If you tipped well on the first day, your waiter or waitress will likely hold your table for you for the rest of the week, in hopes of getting another hefty tip. We usually had 6-8 of us at a table. The first day we all pooled $1USD each. Then on the third day, half of us tipped, as well as the last day. In between we either had reservations at another restaurant or ate closer to the beach. Your waiter/waitress switch shifts are in 7 day rotations - they work one week in the morning and then the following week, they work in the evening. As for the beverages, the juices are all watered down, so, don't expect too much there. If you like pop, you will find that the "Coke" is more like an off-brand of it. The "Sprite" is basic. The only one that is true to it's name is "Fanta" orange. There is white, red and sparkling wine. Nothing to write home about, but not bad either. One thing to note, you will be given a brochure with a map and info on the restaurants; it states that the restaurants open for dinner at 6:30, however, it is a typo, as it actually opens at 6:30. As for the "entertainment", it's very basic and starts around 9:30-ish. There is an earlier one for children. The only one that was appealing was a synchronized swimming one. The other shows were magic, dirty dancing, boogie, game shows. If you want to go to the spa, I would suggest the Cuban massage. It is 50 minutes and they use a Rum Oil. The massage itself was good, but they use a few different oils, so, it rolls between cooling effect, warming effect and just room temperature. It was awesome. I paid $34USD, but some people paid up to $50USD. You have to negotiate...it also helps if you have a few friends to do it at the same time or at least book at the same time you are. There is a massage you can get on the beach, but it is only for 30 minutes for $22 USD. I asked if I could book back-to-back, to get in an hour and they looked at me like a deer in headlights. Had I find a loop hole? They told me that I couldn't. The spa also has their own pool with showers and cabanas. It is peaceful and relaxing. It is an unwritten rule that you bring "gifts" for the staff. People bring all sorts of things - school supplies, medicine, clothes, feminine hygiene products, chocolates, etc. I took it upon myself to ask some of the locals and staff what they preferred - this is the top 10 list of what they would like: 1. Natural coloured nylons - sizes B or C 2. Socks for men, children and teens 3. Voltaren 4. Creams and Lotions 5. Preferably things that don't run out 6. Chocolates 7. Feminine hygiene products 8. School supplies 9. Soap 10. Manicure/Pedicure items - nail polish, remover, nail files, etc. Shopping - the souvenirs were repetitive - salad tongs, trivets, keychains, shell jewellery, wooden cars, license plates, etc. Bartering was not as easy. Some vendors were very insistent, regardless of how many you wanted or if you walked away...usually, those are the good ones, but a lot of vendors wouldn't bend. The market in Varadero was a good place to go - block of maybe 2 hours to go through it all. It was $20USD to get there by taxi. Our drivers waited for us, but if not, there's a string of them waiting. Havana - it is definitely worth going to Havana. If you pay a little extra ($40USD) and if your cab driver speaks English, you can get a basic tour of the city. Havana is about 2 hours from Varadero. It was a novel idea to go in an old chevy, but the driver was hesitant on putting on the air conditioner. When we really couldn't handle it anymore, it was good, but then, the engine overheated and then we got sidelined. Another taxi came for us about 20 minutes later. Plan on spending about 8 hours, including one sit-down meal. And don't forget your toilet paper. Tipping and taking gifts - You don't need to convert your money into Cuban Pesos, it's complicated and unnecessary to do so. They will accept USD everywhere, and at most places, they would accept Canadian, as well. One thing about the currency - if the money is withered or ripped, they will NOT accept it. Do NOT take loonies and toonies (Canadian $1 and $2). I suggest you take a schwack of $1USD. It's bulky, but incredibly useful. IMPORTANT: If you purchase art, such as paintings, or hand-carved statues, etc. that aren't mass made, look on the back for a stamp of the artist. This will not only act as an sign of authentication, but it will also not be taxed at the airport. If there is no stamp, you will have to pay $10USD at the airport. If you put the art in your checked bag, AND your baggage has been randomly chosen for a search, and they find art that is not stamped, they will reject your bag and it will be confiscated. You can risk it, but I would be upfront about it. Overall, the beaches are amazing, the sand is fine and white. The water is incredibly clear and warm. I hope I was able to help you. Don't hesitate to reach out, if you have any questions. Bon Voyage!

I went to this resorts with my parents and two children (5 and 6). I couldn't say enough good things. The rooms where clean and the maids added great personal touchés daily. The ground are beautiful. The splash pad for the kids was great (but could use à paint job). There wasn't a lot of kids there though so we spent most of our time in the main pool. The bar tenders and event staff where amazing with us, especially my kids. All the bar tenders at the pool bar would remember our order and have them ready for us. They did make the drinks à little strong at first but ones I asked it to be a little less alcohol they remembered and did so everytime. The food was Good for cuba. If you are à picky eater your going to struggle in cuba regardless. Room service has excellent chicken fingers and fries, which our kids love and was the best kept secret. Over all we had a great expérience.

The staff here are amazing! Friendly and courteous. The food was hit or miss. Hope you like tilapia! The shows were great, better on the weekends. The beach was the most amazing thing here. The crystal blue water was mesmerizing. The bugs are a HUGE issue to never make me want to return. The 'no-see-ums" disrupted our vacation. I have returned home with giant pus filled welts that turned into an infection. I can't imagine if elderly or children got these bites, they are an extreme itch. Avoid!!!!!!

Dear guest. Thank you for choosing us and for placing your trust in our personalised service to help you enjoy your holiday. No-see-ums tend to live very close to the water. Being on a peninsula, their extermination is extremely complex. However, we have all the protocols in place to control them and always advise our clients to use insect repellent to prevent bites. We will do everything in our power to provide you with a much better experience in the near future. Kind Regards, Quality Manager Iberostar Selection Varadero

The beach and grounds were beautiful. The weather was perfect - not too hot, plenty of shade. We particularly enjoyed watching the humming birds in the gardens. Our room was clean, peaceful and spacious. The spa, pools and entertainment were all good and the staff were friendly and helpful. We used the hop on hop off bus which stops outside the hotel a few times and walked round the nature trail which is close to the hotel. But the food is awful. We visited Cuba a few times before Covid and never found this to be a problem before. Yes, I know they have shortages of many things, and they do their best with what is available. It is not a shortage of ingredients but a lack of culinary skills. Many poor countries produce amazing food from just a few ingredients. Here it was repetitive and bland. Raw bacon and under cooked meat. No seasoning, very few green vegetables. No citrus fruit or avocados although they grow them on the island. Stodgy, rock hard cakes and pastries. The fried eggs are good. The best meal of the holiday was the one on the plane coming home. If they could get the food right it would be perfect.

We stayed here for my 50th birthday earlier this month. From the moment we arrived we knew we had picked a winner. Beautiful open plan reception with water features, polite and friendly staff, smooth check in and quick transfer to our room. The room was a good size and clean and comfortable' We were at the back of block 11 and it was very quiet. The restaurants on site were good. The buffet, pool and beach restaurants were good, but you must try the Japanese, Mediterranean and gourmet restaurants (all included if you are all inclusive), just book at reception- the food in all of them is exceptional. The only thing I would say is that as it is a set menu with few options, it would be better if a pre printed menu was available so you could pick, rather than have the waitresses explain to you as it is quite noisy and difficult to hear. The cigar bar is also good fun and the sommelier will help you have the full Cuba cigar experience. There is entertainment every night and it is of good standard- plenty of activities during the day too! There is a bit of maintenance going on at the site at the moment, at the pool restaurant, and one of the bridges to the beach (next to the beach bar/restaurant) which is a little noisy, but does not detract from the zen yet vibrant quality of the place. There are plenty of places around the pool and beautiful beach for you to sit. There are no towel reservations as towel rental is a refundable £30 each (by credit/debit card only) so I think a lot of people are worried about them getting stolen. If you travel with Tui, it is not worth booking excursions in advance as the rep (on site daily) has a number of options including daily trips to Havana (a must do). The Tui website indicated these only went twice a week. Currency. UK credit debit cards are widely accepted. if not then US dollars or Euros are preferred over the Cuban peso. Do not change any more than about £10 to pesos as you will not use it and only change at the resort. Get low denomination dollars or euros so you can tip easily. This is a beautiful country with beautiful people- enjoy your trip!

The reasort has geat location with peacfull beach and wonderful nature. It is obvious they have new facilities and keep renovating their rooms keeping them clean and new. Our rooms were clean and fixed. The staff is friendly, mindfull and always ready to help. We didn't have any problems with europeans. But did have a problem with canadian neighbors who were addicted and screamed a lot swearing for a few days, until the security came. The food was as best as it could be regarding cubian situation. We had seafood, europen cheese, rum etc. Everything freash and nobody in our big, 8 people, family got poisoned. Even our baby and toddler had smth to eat in their buffet. Well, it is obvious they have many people and try thier best to feed all of them. Sometimes meat was still raw or we saw sanitary violations. Well, the restaurants were simple, nothing fancy. But we came looking for nature, beach and cubian atmosphere and we got it. Will definitely return, it is visible the resort is improving. Also want to mention entertainments for kids. The staff loved playing with them afternoon and after dinner. My daughter couldn't go to bed if she didn't have dances and games every evening in their disco place close to the bar. Overall, we had a wonderful experience!

This is our 2nd stay - both in building 16. We cannot say enough about the staff, food, beach, pool etc We will return again next year. This is an excellent resort. Aimee, our smiling welcoming buffet hostess, Maryelys who took care of our needs and placed flowers on our dining table! Both made us feel so special! Daniela, Dani, Juan all made us feel at home. The quality and quantity of food was perfect. So many choices at the buffet. The chefs and staff are very creative. The Gourmet restaurant, we went to twice, provided excellent food and impeccable service! Dianelys, our lovely maid in building 16, made our room very clean and perfect every day. We had a nice time speaking with her as we came in and out. The Star Cafe and lobby bar make excellent cappuccinos and frappuccinos. We cannot speak to the quality of alcohol or the entertainment. Congratulations to all!

Just retuned from another wonderful stay at this hotel. I have been here many times. The people from management through all of the other staff are amazing! Whether in the morning by a gardener or at night by bartender you are greeted by a warmth you can only experience in Cuba. There are too many individuals to give praise and I might forget someone. So to my Cuban family thank you again for an amazing stay! I hope to see you again in Feb. Papa Noel
