1.) The food was average. Very repetitive in the buffet but definitely not bland. We were always able to find enjoyable options.
*Laura at the buffet was wonderful. She is lovely to speak with and provided impeccable service.

2.) Room was perfect. Our maid was phenomenal and ensured that we had bottled water, toilet paper and fresh towels daily. No issues with A/C.

3.) Lots of pool options. With little kids, this was great.

4.) Sports bar was great to have a drink before dinner. Very cool atmosphere

5.) The entertainment staff (Especially Julio) waiters, baristas, cleaning staff were all lovely. Helpful to the best of their capabilities. No one is ever sitting around, always working.

👎
1.) Ice was an issue. The machine had broken down so ice in drinks was scarce for 6 of our days

2.) Toilet paper is a hot commodity by the evening. Make sure you have wipes for dinners out.

3.) Skip the Cuban a la carte restaurant. The buffet meals were more enjoyable.

4.) Hot Dogs also become scarce later in the afternoons. Hit up the snack bars before 1pm to ensure you get one.

This resort is huge; expect walking and a lot of it. Also, bring a flashlight or use the one on your phone as the path lights didn’t appear to be on some evenings

This was my first trip to Cuba and it was quickly clear that due to import/export and economy, this would
be a different vacation than other warm destinations.

With that being said, what was lacking was made up by the beautiful weather, beaches, and most importantly, the Cuban people.

We just got back from a week at Memories Varadero Beach resort and found that prior to leaving, reading all the reviews helped us prepare for our trip, so here is ours!
Food: the food is buffet style meaning it is meant to feed hundreds of people in a short amount of time so it will not be as warm and fresh as you’d like. we did not particularly enjoy the food at first but once you find something you like, stick with it. Had no shortage of condiments. We liked to snack at the buffet then go to the 24hour snack bar beside the quiet pool to fill up on burgers/hotdogs/fries which were very good! Omelette bar for breakfast was by far the best thing. Watch out for the Russians in the buffets as they will bump into you and act like it was your fault and will cut you in lines expecting service before you.
Staff: honestly, we were the most disappointed with the staff this week. They were not very welcoming or cheery and made us feel like a hassle. As Canadians, we were always very polite when asking for drinks etc.. and the bartenders rolled their eyes at us on multiple occasions when all we asked for was ice water... we got the vibe that most did not enjoy their jobs!
Rooms/Facilities: we did not have very high expectations when it came to the rooms after reading reviews but we were very pleased. if you want a newer/updated building, the high 30’s will do the trick! however, our door broke and we had to walk back and forth from building 34 to the lobby 3 times until the staff finally suggested they would send a maintenance guy over (make sure you keep room keys away from cellular devices) Our maid was very sweet and thoughtful but if you skipped a day without tipping, you wouldn’t get any fresh clean towels. Grounds were well kept and beautifully done. Lots of walking and carts ignore you unless you waive a tip in front of them! Tons of resort dogs that are cute to watch roam around.
Entertainment: Typical resort entertainment. Band in theatre played good tunes before the shows every night that every one seemed to enjoy. Zumba at the activity pool was extremely fun and entertaining to watch. The staff have some great moves! Regla from the entertainment team always had a smile on her face and offered the idea of partying at the activity pool!
Pools/Beach: We loved the pools and beach here at Memories! Spent majority of our time at the quiet pool as they have newer chairs and it was less busy. The beach was beautiful but very busy at times and had more shaded spots/huts available rather than pools if you want to be out of sun. Locals selling items on the beach sometimes got annoying as we found them quite pushy and in your face. Overall, we had a fine time and weather was great but we would maybe look into booking at another resort before coming back to memories. Great for the price

We are a family of 15, ranging from 3-67 and we had a wonderful time.
We had VIP/returning guest status. We were in building 32. Check in was easy and we had two carts carry all of us and our luggage to our rooms. The beach was busy this week but our VIP got us the private section of the beach where the workers would help us set up all our beach chairs. The pool was great and always had a large selection of chairs (activity pool, we were too loud for the quiet pool). The activity crew is wonderful and works hard to keep people entertained. The water slide was a huge bonus especially for the kids. Never more than 5 people waiting to go down. The bars all varied with the lobby bar being the best. Depending on the heat, time of day and number of people, at times the swim up bar would run out of ice. The snack bar above the swim up bar was a hit with my kids - hotdogs etc. The little buffet near building 32 was awesome for breakfast and lunch. For supper the Japanese is the best for sure but there’s always something to eat at the buffet. With VIP/diamond club there is a special section of the buffet - totally worth it as there were lines to be seated at peak times. Our room was clean and well maintained. Basic but we weren’t here for the rooms! Took a while sometimes to get hot water going but able to have a hot shower daily. Arletty (customer service) was so kind and helpful with late check out, room requests and getting us all into the same building. She was so kind and wonderful! Overall this was a great trip, cold drinks, hot weather, food for everyone. We loved the resort, big, friendly, lots to do and see and I would come back.

This was our 7th vacation, in the past 2 years, to the Caribbean, and definitely the worst experience of any of the resorts we stayed in. Our room was dated and musky smelling. There were thousands of small ants infesting the room. The bed mattress was thin, hard and uncomfortable. The shower (only) was raised off the floor and you had to step over a large bathtub to shower, my head hit the ceiling...also no hot water! The television didn't work in the room, or elsewhere in the resort. The toilet doesn't flush toilet paper. I could go but instead will move on. The "Diamond Club” customer service representative, when given a written detailed list of what our complaints, told us if we don't like it we should move to another resort at our own expense! We promptly spoke to our Sunwing Rep. who escalated our issue...we were moved to Grand Memories two days later. The beach at Memories is beautiful but requires walking and cannot be seen anywhere in the resort, the pools are cool but nice, and everything else at the resort requires major work. Food was okay but sometimes undercooked (hamburgers raw in the middle even after asking for it be recooked). The dining area and generally the whole resort was not hygienically maintained. Light bulbs were burnt out on common pathways, so take a flashlight with you at night. No place to go at night except for the very crowded lobby. The show doesn’t start until 9:30 and you will not want to stay in your room. The few bars and coffee services are understaffed and long waits are normal. Serving yourself is normal as waiters only pick up the glasses to be reused. It is also normal for the bars to run out of vodka, beer, etc. Hotel security is poor so do not leave pool towels out on ground level floors or unattended when at the pools. It cost 16 CUC ($16 USD) to replace them. Having lost 2 towels you should bring very light colorful cheap towels from Wal-Mart to mark your chairs. The bed lined is sketchy so you should bring 2 large pillow protective cases to use between your pillows and the pillow covers provided. Our trip to Varadero by double-decker bus was scenic and enjoyable as well as our one-day trip into Havana.

As another review stated "where to start?" Upon our arrival , at approx 9pm , we approached the front desk to book in and the mentioned the Diamond Club upgrade. The clerk said we did not have the upgrade, I had to pull the paper copies from my luggage and she still insisted we did not have upgrade until another clerk came to point it out to her. We were then directed to the Diamond club office when a lobby individual, who's name I later discovered to be "Ever" firmly asked me where I was going. I said the office. When we returned to the front desk for our key cards, "Ever" took our luggage onto a cart to drive us to our room. This was a 2 second drive. He was not particularly pleasant but we did ask him his name. When we got into our main floor room I was shocked, falling broken plaster, long dead bugs everywhere , broken stained furnishings, and the worst smell. "Ever" was standing there when I realized he was waiting for a tip, tired & exhausted, I apologized to him saying I have yet to change our Canadian money at which point he showed me his wallet, I took this to mean he would change our money?, knowing I had very large Canadian bills, I ask if we could bring him his tip to the lobby, he then SLAMMED the door in my face! This was our welcome to Cuba.
Upon our return to the lobby we exchanged our money and my husband gave EVER a generous tip. Canadians are honourable people.
We did not unpack our luggage and it was a good thing too. The room, especially in the evening had the largest cockroaches I have ever seen. I woke to one right beside me on the headboard. There were other various bugs but these were the worst. I discovered their entry into the room was through the bathroom sink. I discovered this while brushing my teeth looking into the drain, there they were.Although Diamond club members , it was late on the second day before any drinks appeared in our refrigerator. Our blankets & bed sheets did not feel clean . The bedcover actually smelled. The second day our bathroom floor was full of water, we thought it was the toilet, turned out to be the sink, a/c stopped working also ,took 2 days of requests to have things fixed. We made every effort to spend as little time as possible in our room and although we tipped pretty much every day, the dead bugs did not disappear.
The entire week we would get the rare occasional forced smile and we really felt we were burdening these people with our presence. It was so hard to tip these people but we did.We felt like we had to beg for a drink at the bar ,which was dominated by one particular nationality of people that pushed & shoved their way into place , then were rude & disrespectful to the staff and yet I never saw these people give a tip! Not at the bar or the dining room.Never.
I will not return to this resort, it is very unsafe in so many ways.
I was in in Cuba 30 years ago & what I remembered was the beautiful ocean & sand beaches. That was the one part that did not disappoint.Cuba is a very beautiful island but this resort needs to get its act together. So much that was so wrong.

Let me start off by saying I love Cuba and have been 5 times, however this was the worst hotel experiance, thank god this was not our first trip. Pools are good, beach is beautiful thats about it. The hotel is dirty, hardly any toilet paper. The staff were rude and didnt care, would just talk about people as they walked away. I have also tipped the bar tenders very well, which usually gets you good service all the time. Tipping didnt matter, because the still treated you like you were no one. Very unappreciative. Paid for Diamond club upgrade, waste of money. No beach service, hardly ever had top shelf alchol and the no wine. The buffet was horrible, diamond club resturant was never cleaned, had to wait for clean table or clean it ourselves. Maid started out good as long as we left a good tip daily, can say they really dont clean the rooms or change the bedding often enough. One day apparently we didnt leave enough of a tip, and the maid took our toilet paper and left no rolls for us. We had to wait 8 hours after numerous calls to the front desk to get toilet paper for a family of four. Extremely unhappy with Memories Varadero resort and the horrible service recieved. We were treated like we were bothering everyone, everytime we needed or asked for something. I will never go back to this resort or support a Memories hotel again.

We had a great time over our 1 week stay. The people and employees made our stay really enjoyable. The beach was the best part of the trip, the water is absolutely pristine and helped create the most amazing pictures ever. We had an issue with our room however we contacted the Diamond Club manager named Diosdada who promptly found us a new room which was much better. During out trip we saw Diosdada multiple times, he was always pleasant and helped us feel comfortable. We chose the resort because it was kid friendly. Our kids loved the kids club and my son spent hours playing soccer while we hung out pool since its right next door. One of the best parts of the trip was meeting and chatting with the girls Arileidi and Arlette working in the Diamond club eating area. They were extremely nice, easy to chat with and were quick to serve us. We can't wait to return back!

We spent Feb. 10-17 at the resort, Bldg 37 which was a great location central to the activity pool & the beach. Our room was excellent & well attended by Yanira who was a delight, attentive & kind to us throughout, so welcoming to all! Our room was spotless & the air conditioning perfect. Our safe didn’t work despite efforts to fix it, we were able to share a friend’s otherwise we would have asked to relocate.
Check in was smooth thx to Amauri & we are especially grateful to Arletty who arranged so many aspects of our stay & remembers & cares for everyone. The resort is large but very well laid out. There are large golf carts that can be flagged or arranged but we found the walking fine, a flashlight is a bonus at night.
The grounds, pool & buildings are well maintained compared to many Cuban resorts that I’ve stayed at …for considerable more money.
We found being upgraded so beneficial, able to: enjoy excellent a la carte restaurants nightly; go to the Italian a la carte restaurant for lunch; take part in a wonderful surf & turf dinner with great music(Wed. night); use the Diamond beach & bar with no line up, great service by Yordan & Lizbette (my spelling may not be right!)as well as the Diamond Lobby bar with excellent service by Glenda.
The buffet breakfast was fine however during the wk. things became busier with line ups & some people took huge amts. of food which we often saw being wasted, so frustrating to see! Our server Yuni was wonderful so we followed her to a quiet breakfast restaurant by the quiet pool, excellent omelettes, toast, pastries, juice etc. Bring coffee whitener, no milk or cream available on the resort, You can also eat lunch here or at the restaurant by the Activity pool, burgers, hot dogs, some sandwiches. We found we preferred other options to the buffet just because of the influx of guests.
Not to be missed— pig roast buffet at beach restaurant every Fri, lunch.
Nightly entertainment, we didn’t attend but others in our group enjoyed.
We did attend the Sunwing orientation, helpful re the PCR process for returning to Canada. The process with the resort medical staff was smooth.
Great wk., excellent dollar value & very welcoming & attentive staff.

Our Christmas vacation to this resort was pretty darn fantastic and difficult to beat. The staff was excellent and very friendly, just what Cubans are known for. Even the gardeners who took care of the grounds were very lovely and kind. One cut down a coconut and cut the top off for my son, which made him feel special. The food was delicious. If you were hungry here, you are out of your mind. How many ways do you want your eggs made or your meat cooked? Rows and rows of food. New Years eve the feast was almost sinful. So so so much seafood. The beach. Stunning, absolutely stunning. The pools were stunning. With so many tourists visiting it is understandable that the rooms could use a little updating.
My son, Enrique, brought school supplies and a representative of the resort, Jennifer Soler, helped us set this up. Thank you.
While I wasn't keen on all the birds that flew in and out of the eating areas (not sure what can be done about it), the only negative for me would be that the resort is larger than I usually go to, which is fine. The problem with that is that it is not well lit for night time walking. I believe for safety reasons they should invest in more lighting on common pathways.
Definitely would return again.

We booked for 12 days and was our 4th time to Memories. We were very excited as we have always loved this resort. We ended up getting moved to another resort on day 6 as we could not take the conditions any longer.
The good about the resort:
Pool bar staff at quiet pool awesome. Lobby bar staff awesome. Arletys (hope I spelled her name right) is an awesome, happy an helpful waitress. The fellow guests are always the best here. Omelet station in buffet, my husband loves it.
The bad about the resort:
Out of 6 days 4 we had no bath towels and never saw a hand towel. Had to use beach towel and exchange by pool for clean one. Diamond club now a sham. Every night at the buffet if you were not diamond club but tipped enough at door they would allow you in, even though it was not supposed to be allowed. An if you didn't tip they kicked you out. Watched this night after night and diamond club guests standing in line to get in while non diamond club were taking up there spot. On one occasion witnessed 3 ladies non diamond tip and get in ahead of diamond club guests who were waiting to get in. An they got bottles of wine, water and pop at their tables but no one else was allowed.
Room was dated, smelled like mold and water leaked down the wall when it rained an we were on the middle floor.
We went to 6 different people several times over 2 days for toilet paper for our room and in end had to go to the Sunwing rep. Excuses we heard, can only get between 9 am and 5 PM. There was an accident and the toilet paper will be delayed! 🤦‍♀️ Yes we told the maid whom we never saw. We tried the diamond club customer service an front desk customer service. It took a Sunwing rep to get it for us. An all the lies, excuses, lack of concern , and rudeness is why I off handed said to the Sunwing lady, Matha I think her name in, if we could switch we would an her reply was where do you want to go. She called the head office an we were offered the Melia Marina for no extra cost for the rest of our stay so we went. No it was not the same atmosphere as Memories but we didn't have to fight for toilet paper. We were so shocked and upset over customer service. We sadly will never be back. This was always our favorite resort.
