XVIth century old convent, El Beaterio witnesses the history of Santo Domingo for almost 500 years. Faithfully restored in keeping with the original charm and architecture of its period, this quaint and private hotel offers its guests a unique atmosphere of the inimitable Dominican art de vivre. Nested in the heart of the colonial city, El Beaterio offers eleven coquettish and sober rooms, laid out around a flowery colonial interior patio. Between its stone walls, it’s a peace oasis in the middle of a vibrant and enlivened city. Established in 1530 with the beatas given the task of collecting girls of all ages, Spanish and mixed race, lost on Earth». You’ll find out what a beaterio is, and you’ll learn about the religious figures responsible for its foundation in Santo Domingo. You’ll discover two residents of El Beaterio, Sor Leonor de Ovando and Dona Elvira de Mendoza, first poets of the New World. Since 1990 when UNESCO declared the Colonial City of Santo Domingo as “World Heritage Site”, El Beaterio is classified as “building of documental, historic and architectural value”. In 2016, El Beaterio is officially recognized as Dominican Republic’s first hotel-museum by the Ministry of Culture.

My friend and I enjoyed the Beaterio for two nights. It is clean and has a lot of character and charm. The location is perfect and the staff are very friendly. There are lots of bars and restaurants in the area and it's all easily walkable.

Everybody was very friendly and accommodating. The location was great, right in the heart of Zona Colonial. My room was comfortable with an air conditioner and overhead fan. The shower was pretty small, but manageable.

This is a lovely little hotel. The location is only a few blocks from the shops and restaurants of El Conde. The rooms open onto a central courtyard, full of tropical plants, where breakfast is served. They are nicely appointed and very quiet. Best of all, the ladies of the staff were very friendly and helpful!

We (our family of 4) stayed in La Beatrio for a couple of nights in our just concluded maiden trip to DR. This quaint little hotel is very well located in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo, making it super easy to get around on foot to almost all places of interest to visitors (especially first timers like us). We felt absolutely safe walking around during all times of the day and night. The city was extremely lively with lots of folks around and having a good time, full of historical buildings and plenty of police presence too. The hotel property itself is very quaint , It is a restored monastery with matching furnishings and décor and rather unique. The breakfast was quiet adequate and the staff was extremely friendly. Highly recommend this hotel if you are planning a visit to Santo Domingo for a few days especially to explore its Colonial Zone.

Thoroughly enjoyed staying at El Beaterio. It is just as pretty as the pictures, and a great location to walk all of the Zona Colonial. The shower is small as is the room, but still nicely appointed and the courtyard is gorgeous. Breakfast was great. The staff could not be more helpful--arranged a doctor to come to the lobby for a Covid antigen test, recommendations for sightseeing, a car to see Tres Ojos, etc. Very friendly and nice.

The best thing about the hotel is its setting in an old house where sister beatas lived, and its location. Rooms are rather small, staff is polite and very accommodating. There are more upmarket colonial hotels but this one is quite good.

Dear Cartagena2019, Thank you very much for this very kind review. We are more than happy to read that the setting of our house pleased you. We are the first and only museum-hotel in the Carribbean, and we are very proud to share the rich history of our house with our guests and visitors. On the other hand, you are right, our location is great, near the main attractions (museums, shops, restaurants...) but very peaceful at the same time! We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Yours sincerely, Maria Elvira Giannetti opermanager@elbeaterio.com

Staff had face masks on at all times, classical music played at a low level. Excellent friendly and accommodating staff and owner. The rooms are very clean with outside seating available in a lush garden. Breakfast is served every morning with a carafe of expresso! This area and hotel are very safe for single woman travelers. Access is locked at all times and entry controlled by staff. Surrounding streets have several security guards stationed on the corners throughout the day and night. Very close to Calle El Conde, a pedestrian street with shops and restaurants. Good internet in your room for business travelers.

This hotel is a charming and inviting as all the others have commented. The hotel is as beautiful as the photos with the added delight of history throughout similar to a museum. At the time of my visit, the hotel was regiment in temperature checks, regulating traffic in/out the hotel, wearing masks and social distancing. I appreciated that the front desk staff was bilingual in both Spanish and English. The staff was very friendly. The rating is a 3 out of 5 for two reasons: - Unable to communicate via email - Not a quiet hotel in the evenings It was very difficult to reach this hotel via email. In a COVID status with the recent change in travel requirement, I needed to verify access to COVID testing. Also with such a compact hotel, I was surprised that the guests were allowed to gather in such a disruptive fashion to the other guests. Next visit to the DR, I will opt for a hotel that has a more quiet atmosphere in the evenings and uses email to communicate. It is a past time in the Dominican Republic for the locals to fill the parks hanging out together while enjoying music. Instead of guests heading literally across the street to join, they opted to use the patio area inside the hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel is small so the gorgeous courtyard is actually a few feet from the guestrooms. My whole room filled with their conversation and music for hours. I was surprised the staff never invited them to relocate upstairs to the rooftop space. The experience was the same the next night. It was too loud to continue enjoying my time at the hotel.

We loved this hotel, and stayed there on the way though the city when we arrived, and again on the way back. It is in a charming old building, full of atmosphere, but the beds are comfortable and the rooms are spacious. We had Room 6 which has a little terrace, but there is also a fabulous roof terrace for relaxing. The location is perfect for all the sights of Santo Domingo. But this best thing by far is lovely Gabriella who works on reception. She speaks great English and seems to be able to help with everything. She is very efficient and reliable. Nothing is too much trouble for her. Highly recommend this hotel - when we are all allowed to travel again!

Flying nowadays with the bans, curfews, restrictions and precautions can be a tricky thing. Thank goodness there are not too many restrictions when flying to the Caribbean and Mexico as of now. That being said, one of my favorite places on the planet happens to be Santo Domingo, capital city of the Dominican Republic. And of course, one of my favorite places to be is the Colonial City of Santo Domingo better known as la Zona Colonial. Now if you follow my travel website, travel columns or social media platforms- you’d know that the place I most frequent is El Beaterio Casa Museo, a beautiful guest house with 11 tranquil rooms in the heart of the Colonial Zone. A wonderful breakfast is included with your stay and the happy smiles are complimentary too. The historic 16th Century property (El Beaterio Casa Museo was original a convent in the mid 1500’s) has a beautiful courtyard and a stunning terrace where guests can enjoy a glass of Sparkling Wine underneath the Caribbean moon. One of best traits (there are many) is the actual location of the Guest House. The famed Parque Duarte is across the street. Many of the must-see historical sights, such as the 1st Cathedral, the 1st Fort and/or the 1st Street (Calle de Las Damas) of the New World are really just steps away from the entry door of El Beaterio Casa Museo! On this trip, the amazing staff members made me feel like I was at home as always, but this time, with the virus on everyone’s radar, they made me feel that even more care was taken for my health and wellness. Special thanks goes to Rosemary, Gabriella, Damaze and the 3 ladies who tend the rooms. If you can fly to Santo Domingo from wherever you are, I always recommend staying at EL Beaterio Casa Museo. You’re going to feel like you’re vacationing at your own Spanish Colonial House (you have to see the keys you get (see my videos and pictures) and again- the location cannot be more perfect. Tell them H. Luiz sent you!
