Marien Puerto Plata garners praise for its cleanliness, with guests consistently commending the well-kept rooms and pools, although the beach's tidiness sometimes falls short. The staff's friendliness and helpfulness are often acknowledged, despite occasional service hiccups. When it comes to value, reviews are split; some question the worth of VIP upgrades, while others appreciate the resort's affordability. Amenities like the pristine pools and diverse dining options are popular, though a few visitors find them outdated. The vibrant atmosphere is a draw for many, albeit a bit too boisterous for some. Room feedback is varied, with comfort and cleanliness weighed against noise and maintenance issues.

The complex is very good; clean, well appointed, very courteous staff and food is good.

If I gave a 4* it was for:
The limited variance of the buffet, waiting for it in line of 30 minutes at the 3 à la carte restaurants that are open 1 has both in turn, the very slow speed of the wifi but, accessible almost everywhere on the site itself to the beach. The beach is ok despite a lot of dirt brought by the ocean and in when to enter it, the bottom is dotted with small rocks unpleasant to swim; beach shoes are therefore advised to better enjoy the sea if you can swim there because, from 14 to 21 Dec 2024, every day was forbidden (red flag) due to the rough ocean.

We had the adult VIP which in my opinion, is not worth it for the difference in price.

But, the whole complex is very good .. I recommend it to people who do not expect a variety of food, which bathing in the sea is not important but, the very large and very clean pool is worth it.

Enjoy your stay at all

Currently at resort, been here almost a week. First time in Puerto Plata. I’d give this a resort a generous 3 star. Travelled many islands and I’d compare this to a 4-5 star Cuba resort. The mountain view is breathtaking and the landscaping well kept. The rooms are older but cleaned well, we left generous tip daily so not sure if we got better service. The rooms were very cool which was nice after a hot day.

The lobby is disappointing, there’s no bar so nobody hangs out. No real spot for people to congregate too before dinner. Off the lobby is a sports bar that no one goes too. Outside the lobby going to where rooms/pool located there’s shops. There’s a lot of shops and staff harasses you every time you walk by. Not sure why resort needs so many shops versus hang out spots. Only two spots to hang: snack bar and pool bar.

The beach area is full of garbage from sea. Other close by resorts clean beach area but this one doesn’t seem to. The VIP area on beach is located near bins so no body really hangs there. Pool is very nice and well kept, cleaned daily and adequate shade seating. No swim up bar but bar close by.

Staff is just ok, some are friendly, some are rude. Resort is all Canadians majority being Quebecois.

The food is ok, but repetitive. We went to a local restaurant Lê Petite Francois for lobster and that was a great experience and price reasonable.

I’d recommend going to Punta Cana and paying the few dollars more as you get more bang for your buck.

After a wonderful 28-day stay at the Marien Puerto Plata, we can say that the place met all our criteria, starting with the great service of the employees: John Acosta at the lobby who was able to respond to our needs always with a smile, Clara the housekeeper who took great care of us, Joan at the Pool Bar, Josephine at the buffet and many other people who were always in a good mood, welcoming and attentive.

We highlight the cleanliness of our room, the comfort of the beds, access to lots of free activities such as kayaking, ping pong, table football, gym, etc.

Special mention to the beach on which you can walk for several kilometers, the large swimming pool (which sometimes lacks chairs and 'spots' in the shade, this must be mentioned).

Our favorite for a la carte restaurants: Mexican.
Unlike other resorts in general, reservations at à la carte restaurants are made the same morning between 8 am and 9 am and it is first come, first served. Note that we never had a problem booking a restaurant.

Finally, thank you to the entire Marien Puerto Plata team for your welcome and the wonderful discussions.
We will keep very fond memories of our stay with you. One thing is certain...we will see each other again in the near future.

We stayed at the Marien Puerto Plata Resort from January 28th to February 4th, 2025, and had a mixed experience, especially with the VIP package. While the resort offers some great perks, several shortcomings made it difficult to justify the additional cost.

On the positive side, check-in was a breeze with a personalized welcome in the VIP lounge, setting a great first impression. Our room had a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, and the superior minibar with soft drinks and beer was a nice touch. The VIP lounge provided light refreshments during the day, and having access to the à la carte restaurants without a reservation was a definite advantage. The private beach area with Balinese beds was a highlight, offering a comfortable and relaxing escape from the main crowds. The VIP section at the buffet also provided a quieter dining experience.

Unfortunately, the negatives outweighed the benefits. Despite VIP status, late check-out was nearly impossible to coordinate. Room service was nonexistent, with no response despite multiple attempts. Promised VIP bathrobes, slippers, and turn-down service were not provided. Shaded seating at the pool was extremely limited, requiring guests to claim spots as early as 5:00 a.m. Premium drinks were only served if specifically requested by brand, which was frustrating. The biggest issues were the unreliable Wi-Fi, two days without hot water in our room, and the complete water supply loss on the last day—major inconveniences that significantly impacted our stay.

Overall, the resort itself, as well as the rooms, feel outdated and in need of renovations. While some VIP perks were enjoyable, they did not compensate for the resort’s operational and maintenance issues. I would not recommend paying extra for the VIP package, and I hope the resort invests in much-needed upgrades in the near future.

Eight of us visited the Marien Puerto Plata for the day. I am very glad our stay was for that day only.

The pool was very large and clean, but that is where the positive experience ended. The bathroom off the pool only had 1 working toilet (there were 3 toilets). There was water dripping from the ceiling in the working stall so you got dripped on using the bathroom. Plus, the stench was overwhelming!

We thought the lunch buffet was nice until at the end when a few of us used the bathroom to avoid the one by the pool, an employee came out of a stall and DID NOT WASH HER HANDS. Also, weird quirk, only water, juice and beer are served with lunch. There is no bar service.

Lastly, the shops near the main lobby are rented spaces by vendors and not owned by the hotel. The workers in the store constantly bombard you each time you walk by to come into the store. When someone in our group walked past the Larimar shop, a display of 2 small wooden carvings fell. The employee demanded she be paid $100 for the pieces. My friend is the nicest person ever and immediately gave her money. The small wood carvings (they could fit in your hand) are the kind every shop has that is ordered online and costs $3 each from China. These were not actual hand carved figurines.

I felt so bad for my friend because I knew she had been scammed. I talked with 2 resort employees, Yamiry and Wilnely, but neither offered any assistance. They said the shops are not part of the resort so they do not get involved.

I do not recommend staying here, even for just a day. The resort is in need of some TLC and the service is severely lacking.

This resort is hell on earth. It’s outdated and each day that passes it gets worse and worse. It’s not half of what we paid for.

We are still here and I will probably add more negative comments at the end of our stay.

Staff - they can ruin your whole vacation. The first occasion was at one of the restaurants that required dress code. Our baby’s diaper leaked on his father’s long pants and he had to change. They wouldn’t let him back in… they would rather have him feel uncomfortable and smell than make an exception. The second occasion was when there was no hot water and we called to report it and no one came for 30 minutes. We went to the reception to ask to be moved to a different room since the building had an issue and the staff at reception (Jordan Rosa and Lussany Jacques) started arguing with me. They told me that I have to get my luggage ready before they show me the room they want to move us at. They told me that if I am in my house I wait, so now I have to wait too. In addition, they said that they understand that my baby has a routine and needs a bath but sometimes we need to be flexible 🤣 they wanted to move us to a room that was worse to show us that they are above us and can do whatever they have the power to. Customer service - ZERO! The only nice person there was, was the bell boy.

Food - No variety at all, the a-la-carte restaurants are decent but the buffet is absurd. No fruits during dinner, kid’s food is only deep fried and etc.

Beach - nothing special, nice sand with dirty and broken chairs and garbage all over the beach coming from the ocean.

Rooms - don’t get me started. One day the air conditioner broke, the next day the lock broke, the room smelled like mold all the time, the cards were never working and at the end - no hot water. For everything we had to wait a long time for someone to come and fix.

Animation - this is not something I care about but it was not present at all.

Overall - the good reviews are 95% from local tourists because they are praised here. The staff always prioritizes them and if you are not Dominican you have to wait ours to be helped out. I have visited many places and we are not picky… we just want clean rooms and nice staff when needed to have a good vacation. We closed our eyes about the rooms and the whole resort but all the times staff was involved was too much. DO NOT COME HERE! The VIP is also not worth it, it’s a joke!

P.S. their shirts say “always working on your vacation” 🤣🤣 and Wifi is non-existent, thank God we were close to Iberostar and we used theirs.

We booked our trip for Nov 26 to Dec 3rd. We booked VIP definately worth it. Our room was amazing, very clean, well stocked everyday. Food was absolutely amazing and quite the variety. Al la carts were all delicious with Brazilian being our favourite. The Vip lounge on beach was very relaxing, the vendors on the beach did not come up past the rope which was nice. The Beach was clean and we got to swim in the beautiful warm Caribbean ocean. The pool was always clean and so nice to cool off in. Shout out to the amazing staff, very friendly, helpful and always keeping the grounds clean and safe. We suggest booking a romantic dinner on the beach, which you can ask the VIP reception about or look on the information wall at the buffet. The romantic dinner was well worth the price, the food was so delicious, plentiful and the experience is definately something we will remember. Shout out to the staff that served us. This was a very special night for us and its one we will never forget, thankyou for the service you provided. We also suggest going on the day trip to Paradise Island which included a drive on the catamaran. We arrived by bus which took alittle longer than expected but enjoyed the views and learning about the history as we made our way through. Once on the boat we were welcomed with drinks and sandwiches' then they took us out to a beautiful aquamarine pool of water where we swam for 30 mins, we got back on the boat and we went to an island in the middle of the ocean where we could swim for an hour and drink as much as we wanted. After the hour we boarded the boat again and headed back to paradise island where we indulged in a beautiful buffet lunch. Shout out to the staff once again was probably the most amazing experience we have ever encountered. I'd definately do it again. Worth every penny. Shout out to the staff at the stores within marien, very helpful, friendly and made our shopping experience pleasurable. I cannot say enough about our week long trip, We will definately go back to Marien Puerto Plata, this was my husbands first trip to Puerto Plata and my fourth trip to Puerto Plata and Marien was everything it stated to be. Thankyou for having us and we will see you guys again in the future. xoxo

If you set your expectations accordingly, a couple or family can have a very enjoyable stay at Marien. It is definitely a resort that is on the smaller side, therefore not as many amenities and choices as at a larger resort. First of all, food and drinks. The food at the buffet was very good! Tasty choices and a great variety at all meals. The snack bar was a great option for off peak times. We always found the drinks full of flavour and never watered down. As for the al a carte restaurants, we only went to the Brazillian restaurant and it was delicious!
The single pool is very large and had lots of lounge chairs. Lots of chairs at the beach as well. (We went in mid December). The beach was very walkable, but if you wanted to go beyond 20 minutes, you will have to time low tide in order to cross the river.
The evening shows were entertaining. We didn't care much for karaoke. Aside from the show, there is not too much to do in the evening. There is a small sports bar, but the music there is very loud.
When we were there, it rained heavily on quite a few days. Our room was on the third (top) floor of the building and it had a leak that dripped the entire time. Staff did their best to mop up water around the resort, but guests need to be cautioned about how slippery many surfaces can become. Shout out to the "Green Team" (garden crew) that clean up the debris from the heavy rains that would wash up on the beach in the mornings.
Overall, I would say that we had a very enjoyable time. This is definitely not a 5 star resort, but a great vacation can be had in the beautiful Dominican sun!

This was our first visit to Dominican Republic and it definitely won't be our last. We had the VIP package and were treated like family by Yamiry and Wilnely. When I noticed that the sparkling wine was not in our room as promised Yamiry personally gave me a bottle from the VIP lounge. The air conditioner was set very low in our room and the bed sheets were cold and felt damped Yamiry had warm blankets (straight out of the dryer). Wilnely, showed us videos from her personal phone of umbrella street and wonderful places to tour downtown, the services were very personalized. During our time at the buffet, we tended to sit at the same table and met a wonderful server, Adeversi (I may have spelled her name wrong). Once she got to know us, she always had our drink orders ready as soon as we arrived for either lunch or dinner. There was also a waiter, we didn't get his name, but he worked 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, always in the VIP section and got to know us as well. We were pleasantly surprised when he also worked at the a la carte restaurant and even waited our table there. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the bartender at the Pool Bar who worked the day shift. I didn't catch his name, but called him "little man" he was small in stature but huge in personality and came to know our drink preferences and made them perfectly. With such hospitality from all of the staff including many more I can not name, we will be back! The weather was perfect during the week we were there (January 12 - January 19, 2025, the pool was clean, the food was great and we were able to totally relax and refresh.

We just returned from a week at this resort. We paid $1046 for two and did not have big expectations based on that price, just a relaxinng week of warm weather and swimming in the ocean!

Positives: The grounds are nicely laid out around a spectacular pool area. Our room was spacious and kept very clean by the lovely housekeeping staff. There’s a gorgeous view of the mountain. The dining areas were pretty and wait staff friendly and attentive.

Negatives: The food was so-so, the three “a la carte” restaurants were not open at the same time, and often full so we mostly ate at the buffet which did not have much variety.

There were issues with all of the public toilets, overflowing, dirty, ceiling leaking in one. However the lobby bathroom was clean and functional, even with a candle lit for odors. I saw staff in the malfunctioning bathrooms not seeming to care about overflowing toilets and certainly not cleaning.

But the biggest negative was the filthy beach, which I never saw being cleaned or groomed by staff. The surrounding beach areas are literally swimming in plastic/glass/castoff clothing trash which is washing in from the ocean or into the sea from small tributaries. Shocking and made it feel unsafe to swim in ocean at all.

If the beach were groomed (neighboring resort’s beach was), and perhaps a reservation system for the restaurants was put in place I’d give it another star but as is, I would not recommend, even at this price.

And clearly there needs to be an island-wide focus on trash disposal.
