We had an amazing time at this resort, great nightly entertainment thanks to Mosquito Man! Dance lessons, activities, and daily games were a blast we had so much fun with Carlos and the gang. Thanks to Franklin for a good selection of food, especially at the Mediterranean restaurant. Shoutout to Aneury as well for always having a positive energy and making the best drinks!

This hotel leaves a lot to be desired. A lot is promised, very little delivered. The buffet is just ok .. the A la cartes are good… almost all of the bartenders were friendly and efficient… The pool area is big with very little shade available and what there is is “ reserved “ very early in the morning… although reserving chairs is against policy there is no enforcement… same goes for the beach in both the “public” areas and vip areas…. Wifi is real bad … except in the vip lounge

1. Safety box 3$ per day, unless you are VIP which is included. 2. A la carte restaurant needs to reserve day by day and needs to wake up at 6am to be in the line so the staff will come at 8am to start to book the reservation if you come after 8am. ( we only booked for one restaurant coz didn’t want to waste my time. And it is stupid that we can’t reserve in advence. From all the inclusive resorts that I went I never had a problem like the is ) All restaurants are fully booked. Unless you are VIP. You can reserve advance at VIP lounge for your entire week. 3. Not enough parasol around the pool. Which is people reserved their loungers and hogged night before like 1-2 am. Which they aren’t right to do that and staffs don’t do anything to give others people a chance to reserve. Always the people who able to reserve the loungers I’m very mad 😡 No much shades spot to put loungers. 4. Beach ugly. Too much algues —seaweeds. Many spot for loungers and don’t need to reserve earlier in the morning to hog chairs. Water is not clear 5. Foods buffet restaurant very good, a lot of variety choices 6. Beach snack bar is good. Hamburger and fries are good 7. No mosquitos 8. Room is cleaned not much insect in the room. Bed is too soft. Not very comfy. AC is strong. Needs a thick blanket at night. 9. Entertainment shows at night is ok, not bad. They works hard. 10. Games, dance lessons, etc. All the actions are around the pool. 11. Walking distance to JUMBO grocery store from our hotel 20 mins. If you continue walk you can get to downtown in 20-30 min more. Maybe walking 50-60 min to downtown of puerto plata from our hotel. 12. Bring US dollars or CAD. Bills

This is the 3rd time we’ve been to this resort and we really like it. It’s a smallish resort and so you are always close to everything. This time we were in building 4, main floor with an ocean view. The bed seemed even larger than a king and was very comfortable. The shower was always hot. The buffet had something for every taste. The only thing I would say that is lacking at this resort is the lack of shade around the pool. They really need to add more shaded areas. Hope to go back again someday.

Recently back after 3wks at the Marien with VIP included. Great time, great staff. Nice room. Big pool. Nice beach apart from weeds and garbage washing up and hi winds. Vip was a plus. Ala cartes were very good. The buffet could use a lift at times. Entertainment was very good. Close to the city and playa dorada. Would return for sure. Overall 4 star experience. Great value for the money.

I read a lot of bad reviews and was nervous about going . Was first time staying at a resort for two weeks, always just went for a week ! Two weeks is not too long ! No need to be bored at all . Great resort . Very clean, staff very accommodating, excellent food , even at buffet. Buffet had theme nights. Ie. Chinese, bbq, seafood. Has tbone streak baked potatoes mushrooms one night. Security everywhere so feel very safe . Pool is wonderful, beach is nice (high waves for a couple of days but not hotels fault. Rooms cleaned and restocked with pop, beer, water everyday. Every drink imaginable available from Long Island ice teas…to whiskey sours…. I will definitely be going back ….. only bad comment is the way the book their el la carte restaurants but that would be the only somewhat complaint about the resort . It not even that big of deal. You have to line up early early to book for that night only. We did do all three el la carte restaurants and their food was amazing. Snack bar was very good ! Wonderful resort !

We stayed at the Marien on Feb 2024 for 7 days with a group of 12 people. We booked the adult only option, which gave us VIP automatically, so we didn't 'pay extra' for VIP upon arrival. I can't really comment on whether paying for VIP is worth it or not. You get a special beach area and a VIP lounge which is pretty small and out of the way. In general, this is a self serve kind of resort. You go to the bar; you don't get table service for drinks (other than the a la Cartes/buffet). Pros: The Gardenview room we had was large, everything worked, cleaned daily and the fridge was restocked. The shower had lots of water and it was hot. The staff were friendly- no issues there at all. Our view was of the perimeter was a chain link fence and glimpses of grazing cattle through the tree line. We actually found that entertaining. There were always lots of tables in the buffet and the staff were friendly. The food quality in the buffet varied, some options were great others were cold and debatable. The fresh cook stations were always good and the a la Cartes were great in particular the Brazilian! The resort is reasonably well maintained and the pools were clean. Burgers at the beach restaurant were quite good. The sand at the beach is soft and it is a Blue Flag (meaning it meets a level of standards). Arranging for a taxi is easy and prices are posted for locations (there are likely cheaper fairs available outside the resort but we seldom trust those). The alcoholic drinks at the resort were consistently good- we never got a bad beverage. Bring a reasonably sized travel cup for drinks at the beach and pool to reduce using throw-away plastic cups. The evening shows were pretty good when they happened. The grounds at the resort were kept clean. Security at the resort was always present and we felt safe there. Cons: Sausages and meats like that seemed quite processed (cheap hotdog quality). One day there was real bacon which was great. The quality of cheese was very poor by Canadian standards. No 'real' cappucino or expresso machines/service. If you want a special coffee it comes from an automated machine that you use yourself- it is not made by a human being. I really missed a good cappuccino and a place to enjoy it. It takes awhile to get a carafe of coffee at the buffet for breakfast. The resort is self serve orientated- you have to go to the bar and wait in line to get a drink rather than table service (excluding the a la Cartes or buffet). The a la Cartes seemed to have limited hours for booking and were filled up quickly. People use their beach towels to reserve their loungers really early and hogged them all day. VIP did not have table service for breakfast. If there is a red flag at the beach you really can't swim at all and the guards will whistle at you to get out if you go past your waist. If you are not VIP you have to pay for a safe which is completely ridiculous. The mattress and pillows were very hard and sleep quality was poor because of this. The room was cold and the bed needed a blanket (more than just a sheet). The balcony chairs were very uncomfortable. Be very wary of the vendors/shops, they don't have marked prices and will want to haggle and rip you off. Your best option for alcohol and tourist gifts is likely at the airport (which is crazy). Booze at the airport was 1/2 the price or better that it was at the stores. Markup for jewelry etc. is extreme so don't get suckered in. Pay no more than 1/4 the price they ask- you will find a better deal elsewhere. There is a whole vibe of getting ripped off in the Dominican that we dislike. The walkways with green carpets between the pools are uneven and it is easy to trip and fall (especially after a few silly pops). Some of the chairs in the VIP buffet area are very low, making you feel like a child sitting at a table. Use the cushions from the benches as seats to prop yourself up to a normal table height.
