Booked VIP Adult Only:
We got to the resort at Noon. We were taken to the VIP Reception in the pouring rain (with no offer of an umbrella) It took until close to 4pm to get our room.
Quick summary:
Pros: The staff did work hard to keep on top of the endless water everywhere.
The a la carte restaurants were good
Cons:
Not sure what spending the money of the Adult Only VIP really did for use. Usually there is an Adult Only section of the resort or Adult only features, not here. VIP is suppose to allow you top shelf liquor....The lobby bar would serve it to me but not my husband ???!!? So I think the $200 more each for VIP really equaled out to free Wifi on two devices for the week and a free safety deposit box. The "peaks" were not worth it and a joke.
The hand dryers in the bathrooms around the resort rarely worked.
The buffet was hit or miss, usually a miss
I never went in the shops in the lobby due to the hecklers trying to lure you in
The bar in the lobby was in a different room, odd from other resorts. No table service, live music or entertainment in the lobby
The resort needs a total renovation. Once we had water that I called hot, most likely luke warm or cold
Maybe would rate it a 3 Star

I was at this resort from jan 23-30 with my husband, brother, and 6month old. This was probably my 6th time to the DR so I was pretty familiar with what to expect from our visit. We booked this trip last minute so got a good deal. When we first arrived, check in process was slow but were welcomed with a welcome drink which was nice. The staff at the resort for the most part were very friendly.
The whole resort basically only has a pool bar and beach bar and the bartenders work fast but given the amount of guests there was almost always a long line, they could benefit from a third bar.

The buffet had ok variety but expected a little more. Really enjoyed the omelet station in the morning and fresh juice was amazing. I loved the salad bars at lunch and dinner.
Service however could be greatly improved, almost every morning I had to flag someone down multiple times just to bring over coffee for the table, asked for salt and pepper but the waiter never came back. Anytime you asked for anything, felt like you just had to do it yourself.

That a la cartes were wonderful, better food and service, but had to wait over an hour in line with guest services to get a reservation.
The rooms were a bit outdated but clean, maid was better after we tipped her. She always made sure to bring us extra water since we had a baby in the room and I was constantly sanitizing and preparing bottles. I very much appreciated that.
Mid week my husband got very sick from something he ate, but my brother and I were fine. I however started having tummy troubles the day we left to go home, so that turned us off the food quite a bit.

I heard other guests make comments about the lack of quality of the food, but I think you have to also understand where you're traveling to and what they have available. On the other hand, I've also had much better experiences at other resorts compared to this one.

The pool is one large pool so it was quite cold, the beach is beautiful but didn't have very much shade which was difficult for us with a baby so we spent most of our time by the pool. If you wanted a hut by the pool, you needed to put your towel down on a lounge chair as early as 5am because theyd all get taken, even if it said you werent allowed to do that.

If you get a good deal, this is an alright choice to visit, but personally we'll be trying out a different resort next time around.

I would just like to say do not be alarmed by the bad reviews, we were a bit worried because of these reviews but were pleasantly surprised upon arrival!
Anyways, the location of this resort is ideal, it's only about a 10 minute ride from the airport and close to the city of Puerto Plata. The service was very good, every staff member we encountered was friendly, kind, and helpful. Our Air Canada representative, Karen, was also super helpful. We enjoyed the food a lot (neither of us are picky eaters), we were always able to find something we liked at every buffet. We enjoyed the omelette bar in the main buffet pretty much every morning. We ate at all 3 al la cart restaurants that were included in our package; the Mexican, Brazilian, and Mediterranean... all were great, the Mexican was our personal favourite! The beach was beautiful and a nice place to relax, the only hindrance was the locals from the flea market who will try really hard to get you to come to their shop (I wouldn't recommend going as they try and rip you off big time) if you tell them no thank you they will walk away, security at the beach is also good at keeping them in check. The pool was always a fun atmosphere, there are activities going on all day... shoutout to the entertainers Chihuahua and Mosquito! Sure the rooms are a bit outdated, but you also don't go on a tropical vacation to sit in your room... however, the rooms were very clean and well kept by the maids. One improvement that this resort should make is their cup situation, at the pool bar and snack bar by the beach they have tiny plastic cups for drinks, it's a big waste of plastic and a bit annoying when your drink is finished in a couple sips. That being said, if you plan on drinking a couple (or many) drinks in a day BRING A REUSABLE CUP, you won't regret it. We also went not the waterfall excursion, it was a great experience and so much fun, but it's not for you if you don't like heights. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return and recommend this place to others!

Very ordinary food, missing entertainment, undrinkable wine, old and not very clean room, dangerous if you leave the resort on the beach. No play area for young children. To check in, it took almost 2 hours for us. The beach has a lot of algae and it is not cleaned. Paid WiFi or otherwise it never works, in theory available one hour a day near the pool, but no. The cleaning lady comes during the siesta of the young children and we cannot speak to her to explain that it is not the best time to come and clean the room because they speak no word of English or French, only Spanish. We do not recommend this resort.

We stayed at this resort for 7 nights and had all around wonderful experiences! The rooms were clean, the staff were awesome, the food and drinks were good, and the pool/scenery was amazing.

Rooms: The rooms were clean and kept up well, lots of space, tvs had lots of channels (some good ones in English like HBO), our fridges were stocked regularly, and we came back each day to fresh towels and clean floors (which was wonderful to get rid of the sand)

Staff: Our maid Maritza was amazing! She always brought us lots of water and beverages to have in our room and clearly washed everything in the room down. We never came back to a dirty room. She was also extremely friendly and sweet. She would say hi to us every morning and when we left made sure to say goodbye and all around made our experience great! If you wanna party and have a good time, find Sexy Tequila. He made was the life of the party and made our entire trip a blast.

Food and Drinks: The food was pretty good, better than what we had the previous year in Cuba. The a la cartes were all really yummy and had great service. There was also always food available. When the buffet was closed, the snack bar was open for mid-day and late-night meals (the burgers were incredible). Also, the bars have lots of drink options and cocktails to try.

Resort: The resort was very close for most excursions and the scenery is breath taking. The large pool is cleaned nightly and is well laid out. In the background you can see mountains and nature which was very beautiful. The beach is within walking distance and lots of on resort games and events were held there, like beach volleyball. There are also LOTS of shops to buy stuff at. There are a couple duty frees as well as souvenir shops for everything from sunscreen and hygiene items to designer bags.

Entertainment: Other than the awesome entertainment staff, the resort held events all week. The best were the beach fire party and the pool foam party.

CONS: All around this resort was amazing, the main issue we had was with the third-party businesses that have shops at the resort (ex. tables set up with trinkets, excursions, photography etc). The employees for these businesses (not affiliated with the resort employees) were pushy at times and it got annoying. My only other complaint is the walls and windows are thin so if people were out partying late it got pretty noisy (but that goes for any resort).

This was our third visit to the DR and our first to Puerto Plata. Reason for visiting was a family wedding. We paid extra for the VIP rooms so we were in building 9. The room definitely needed an update - furniture that had seen better days and musty smell (don’t remember it that bad in other places I’ve visited). The wall with the adjoining door was pretty thin so we could hear our neighbours anytime they were there (and them us). Very loud in the hallways as someone else mentioned and doors slammed all the time. Wifi was spotty all week on the side facing the fence. We knew people on the other side of the building who didn’t seem to have the same problem. The view of cows and pigs was fine, but kids begging us to throw them drinks or food was off putting. Security had to walk up and down all day and night.

Never quite understood the towel situation. Maid would knock and walk in without waiting to drop off towels (keep Do Not Disturb sign up if you want privacy). Or take them away when we weren’t there. Pool towels only sometimes got replaced in the room, again at night when we weren’t there. Didn’t know when or if someone would be coming by.

Disappointed that there wasn’t an adults only pool area, though the kids were well-behaved. Also they stuck to the pool with the rope divider. The VIP beach area was good as were the VIP drinks. VIP lounge good for internet most of the time.

Service in the buffet was just ok. I came prepared to tip at every meal but only felt it justified maybe 3 or 4 times. Often waited a long time for water when we sat down, and additional drink orders didn’t always come. Food selection was small but generally tasty. Pasta at dinner and fresh churros at breakfast were great.

We enjoyed the Rodizio restaurant the most. Mexican was pretty good too. Don’t expect to get a seat because you are VIP. You still need to reserve.

The cats were an added bonus. Lots of them around mealtime and they were healthy looking.

The resort should not be selling itself as 5 star. Maybe 2 1/2 or 3. A major renovation and better service would move it up the dial.

Hotel reception staff were not what we are accustomed to at any resort we have been to that is rated at 4 stars or better. We arrived and basically got the run around, they instructed us to the VIP check in, it was in a different building. The receptionist asked us what we were doing there,we told her that the main desk sent us, she proceeded to tell us we were at the wrong check in,then asked if we wanted to upgrade. Well that wasn't happening,so we were sent back out to the main desk where we waited in line again. we finally got registered and requested a second floor room, and they told us no problem, that we would have to wait about 2 hours for the room. After waiting 3 hours, we finally got our room and when the bellman took us to our room, it was on the first floor, i had to go back up and talk to the person at the front desk, asked to speak to the manager, and of course no manager. I had to demand they correct their error. They told me they'd send the bellman to the first room in 20 minutes, so we could move to the new room. Well an hour passed and I had to return to the lobby to demand my room.I finally got my key to the room and had to move my luggage myself even though i was told the bellman would be right down to help me. No sign of anyone to help us. The worst of it is that it poured rain the whole time this all happened.
My wife and I requested that the Sun Wing representative help us to move, as our initial experience at Be Live Marien was extremely poor and unsettling. We wanted to leave right away, she told us she couldn't reach her office because of a communication problem. Told us to check with her the next morning. We did so and ended up waiting for her for over 2 hours to tell us they couldn't move us without charging us more than we paid when we booked the hotel.
This was the worst All-Inclusive experience we have ever had,and we've been to over 50 hotels all over the Caribbean.
Buffet was very average, food cold at times, poor selection or always the same, rehashed food. A La' Carte' restaurants were excellent, and the staff were good in the food service areas and also cleaning staff.
Entertainment fair to poor and staff unprofessional.
Check in staff fair to poor, customer service and professionalism are lacking.
Rooms are old and tired, reasonably clean.
Beach is good.
Nice to have TV when its raining and you can't leave your room, well you get 3 english channels and that's it.
Fitness centre is a joke, looks great when you first walk in, but equipment is mostly old and poorly maintained, if it even works, staff spent all their time either working out themselves or chatting with their buddies who are working out. No towels, equipment dirty, never wiped down.
You also have to pay extra for a safe lock, $3/day, ridiculous!
This is not a very well run hotel and I can say for sure that we will not return to this Hotel.
We are also very disappointed with Sun Wing as I believe they share some of the responsibility in our poor experience, with their representative being absolutely no help.
We will not be recommending this hotel to anyone we know!

We traveled to Be Live Puerto Plata for one week,we had requested a Superior room Through Sunwing vacation. We were going with a group of 21 people.
We travel frequently and are OK with things not being perfect, we’ve learned to “pick your battles”so to speak. This resort is very small, the property is quite lovely it has beautifully maintained gardens and a beautiful beach right in front of the resort with tons of shade.
We only visited two of the restaurants the Brazilian and the Mexican both were fine as far as food and service go. My only issue is when you have booked a Superior room and once you get to the desk to inquire about the extras that you should get for the extra money and are told flat out you’ve got all the extras you were going to get ...it was a little disappointing to me I didn’t fuss I just moved on.I wouldn’t let that affect my trip and I will probably speak to my Sunwing representative I only wish I had brought a copy of what the superior room was supposed to include. I was disappointed to spend extra money and get no extras in a room that was very much below our standards. We did have fresh sheets and fresh towels daily the room was fairly clean but extremely dated!
If you are looking for a fairly cheap vacation with friends or with the family I would recommend this resort the food was fine everywhere and there is handicap accessibility throughout the resort!

I would not recommend this Resort to anyone. Two days without hot water in the complex I was staying in. Got scolded for taking a couple of sandwiches to my room from a waiter in the Buffet Restaurant. The beach was not the cleanest. WiFi 1 Hour/Day in one hot spot if you could get on it maybe once every three to four days. They charged $3.00/day for a key to your safe. My room was on 3rd floor (no elevator). On many occasions it stunk of cat piss in the hallways in the complex I was staying in. Maid service was not good, she would take the towels in the morning and you would not have any towels until the evening on that day. My room smelled of mold so I had to have the patio door open all the time and the fan running. Maid would not respect The Do Not Disturb Sign I would put on the door, on several occasions she caught me naked coming out of the shower. Latch over was broken on my door. She woke me up early when she would knock and just enter my room.

On a positive note which made my stay a lot better: Entertainment Team was absolutely
Awesome! Bladimir, Espagueti, Tracy, Jesus, Chihuahua and Skinnyboy Jordalis. The Evening Shows were excellent. I feel the Animation Team and the Entertainment is what keeps this Resort going.

The meals were ok but I like my meat Well Done not raw in the middle. Their Breakfast was the highlight of my day.

Let me start saying that
Staff is great - they are responsive when issues occur and always have a smile on their faces.
We have had a couple of issues, a clogged drain and A/C not working within different days and the issues were fixed within the hour.
Our room flooded after terrible rainfall and staff responded and rectified this immediately.
The room are a bit dated and need some TLC,but they are kept very clean. The all resort in general is kept really clean.
Food at the buffet was not the greatest but ok - not a ton of variety but this was expected. The a la cartes went from great to good in the following order: Mexican, Mediterranean and Brazilian.
The entertainment staff were really good, we had a couple of days of bad weather but they kept us entertained all day, especially since we have 2 kids that easily get bored !
One suggestion, bring you own sunscreen and after sun care because the store at the resort are very very overpriced.
I would also suggest to do a tour of puerto plata, we had fun and we get to explore the town and learn about their lifestyle.
