I found out about Chez Martine on this website, and after reading the great reviews, I decided to book a room for my vacation to St. Martin from March 6th through the 10th, 2005.
In all of my prior trips to the island (4 previous trips), I stayed down the road at Grand Case Beach Club. I love GCBC, but from now on, I will definitely be staying at Chez Martine. The two hotels are similar, but the main differences are size and cost. As for size, I was glad to escape the feel of the big resort; additionally, I thought it was much more chic staying above a five-star restaurant. The biggest difference, though, was cost. Chez Martine cost substantially less than any other fine accomodation on the island.
But Chez Martine deserves more than a comparison to GCBC; it merits its own detailed description. Past the staircase and the hallway leading to the second-floor rooms, there's a very nice balcony which faces the rooms. The provincial French coloring and the nice view - with the mimosa trees, the small mountain and the beach all within sight - capture the what I took away as the essence of Chez Martine: the perfect upscale blend of French culture and Carribean spirit.
We got the suite, which I strongly recommend even though I would have loved any of the other rooms. The most striking aspect of the room when I first walked in was how shiny the light green, tiled floor was. We dropped our bags on the couch, and walked around the suite to see the other amenities. The bathroom was very clean, there was a small refrigerator (more than enough staying in Grand Case), a big closet, plates and every other dinner wear imaginable, an adapter for US electric appliances (there was also two US-style sockets on the wall), and everything else you'd expect to find (lamps, etc.). Chez Martine does not have everything you're probably trying to escape (TV, alarm clock, phone).
The more intangible qualities of the room were what really set Chez Martine apart in our minds. We arrived on a Sunday, and most everything was closed, so we went to the local supermarket and picked up some crackers, some cookies, and some water. We just sat out on our private balcony which offered a phenomenal sunset. Chez Martine has a good beach, so at dusk we decided to walk up and down Grand Case's beach. Coming back, we washed the sand off of our feet and lay down to relax after a full day of traveling. Since the bed is very firm and extremely soporific, and at some point I woke up and realized that we had been sleeping with all of the lights on.
Waking up every morning was wonderful. The waves on the beach seemed to crash louder in the morning, and the shades to the outside seem to block the perfect amount of light. There were competing motivations in getting up, though. As much as we wanted to stay in bed and get a little more sleep, we equally wanted to start the day with breakfast of French bread, croissants, chocolate croissants, strong coffee, a huge selection of teas, meat and cheese and then make it to the beach. We were always inclined to opt for the latter.
Coming back to Chez Martine after the beach was great. There seemed to be not even a grain of sand that we had previously tracked in, fresh towels, and a sharply made bed. It was great to shower and relax on the bed before getting ready to go out. And after a hard day at the beach, it was nice to know that going out entailed no traveling since Grand Case is the place to dine out. We simply leisurely got ready and walked downstairs to have the nicest dining in the Caribbean all within a two-minute walk.
Completely wonderful and very highly recommended.

we stayed 7 nights begenning february 2005 in the room #5 (upstairs)
it is a large and clear room with an extralarge bed and a fridge
there is also a private bathroom (shower and 2 lavatories)
and separate toilet - all very clean and practical
this room and 3 others have a shared large balcony
on which each room has a table and 2 seats
from where you have a view on the seaside
the access to the beach is easy and quick
the manager named RUDY is very kindly and helpful
he welcomes you courteously and take care of you with discretion
the breakfast is nice everyday (french bread, croissants, butter, several
jams, cheese and ham, home made coffee, good teas, milk, orange juice )
served in the restaurant over the beach, waves under your eyes...
we have eaten chez Martine only once (last evening) but it was great !
each course was perfect (for eyes and taste) from starters to desserts
and the price is not as high as others for a best dinner
we are very satisfied of Chez Martine and recommand Rudy to you.

Room was comfortable and fairly priced. Lighting in the room was not great and while hotel is on the beach, they do not have beach chairs. Hadn't been to Grand Case and while the restaurants were very good, it's congested an not tremendously appealing. Was frustrated when asked for slightly late check-out we were told the hotel was fully booked which appeared inaccurate based on website. On the plus side the room was recently updated, had a nice "vibe" and the bed was comfortable.

If you are simply looking for a "base of operations", this is the hotel for you. This is not a resort, it's a small but excellent french restaurant with a 7-room hotel attached.
We stayed in the "suite" for five nights and then moved into one of the other upstairs rooms for our last night. Our first night we were frustrated by the lack of screening on the sliding glass door to the private deck (mosquitoes bit us all night, every night). We also found problems with the bathroom cabinet door (handle fell off in my hand), the closet door (wouldn't open) and the shower head (detached from wall).
However, our first morning we loved waking up to the sound of waves washing up on the beach outside our room. We ran right downstairs and straight onto the sand. The location is excellent.
Grand Case looks like a typical caribbean village (poor) until you get to the beach road (blvd du grand case). All the shopping and restaurants are here. Almost all of the restaurants are expensive, french and very good. For a more reasonably priced alternative, the lolos (especially Talk of the Town) also offer great BBQ.
The week we were here, the town was fairly uncrowded. Most of the time there were only a couple other people on the beach. The beach itself is quite long and varies in width from about five feet to 20-30', depending on the tide. The sand is nice and soft, and I collected quite a lot of beach glass. (be careful of the glass that is still a bit sharp!)
Here are some other details. Only the suite (room 7) faces the beach directly. Rooms 4,5,6 share a patio space that overlooks a sort of garden area. You can see the beach, but only if you are at the rail. Room 3 faces a dark upstairs corridor. Rooms 1 and 2 are on the first floor.
Each room has a mini-fridge, but all rooms share the same "kitchette". (see photo) The beds were rather hard, and the pillows ran the gamut from compressed down-filled to lumpy polyester. The bathrooms all had double sinks and plenty of counter space. Room 5 did not have a bathtub but the shower worked. Room 7 only had a hand held shower nozzle. The limit of the hot water is about five minutes.
Breakfast is included. You eat in the small dining room, overlooking the beach. Every morning is the same croissants (plain and chocolate), baguette, ham & cheese, orange juice, preserves and coffee. The Miami Herald is also available Mon-Saturday.
Rudy, the manager, is very amiable, however we didn't really meet him until the third day. The owner doesn't speak a word of English, but is also very friendly and helpful.
We had some trouble with our car. The battery was stolen right out of it, as it was parked in front of the hotel! The owner, despite significant language barriers, was tremendously helpful. He made dozens of phone calls for us and even drove my husband to the airport trying to find someone from the rental agency.
All in all, we did have a wonderful week. We were looking for something quiet and convenient to the beach. We didn't want lots of other people around, or noisy pool areas. We visited the Grand Case Beach Club one day and Orient Beach another day, and both areas had lots of activities but were too crowded for us.
If you are looking for a modest hotel, without frills or amenities, this is definitely your place. You won't overspend and you'll be right on the beach.

I've never written a review before and I guess I feel the need to share my experience with other travelers. I need to preface this by saying I have traveled quite extensively throughout Europe, the US and some of the Caribbean. I have stayed in Hostels, Pensions and Fine Hotels.....
This little hotel is a great spot for lounging on the beach while sipping a glass of wine or cocktail, Sade playing in the background. The staff, Vinc and Camin are amazing, accommodating and genuine.( I really want stress this!!!!!)
The location is right on the ocean and right on Grand Case Blvd. Not too bad :)
The rooms are clean and spacious. The have no real amenities which is fine with me. I love the beach and have no real need for all the extras.
By no amenities I mean no TV in the room, fine, actually better than fine.
No clock, fine.
No beach towels, fine, I guess (we bought some at a stand near Orient Beach,$10 each)......This is where my problem begins.
No phone in rooms, fine.
No phone anywhere on the property, not fine.
No Proprietors on site after 9-10 o'clock, actually, no one on sight after that time, I guess fine?? I guess until, the club across the street, open every night draws the local crowds on the weekends. We woke up at 2:30 a.m. to about dozen locals on porch!!!
There is no gate on the outside of the building. If you are staying in room 1 or 2 there is no barrier between you and the outside world but a small picket gate that's 2 feet tall and a thin bedroom door with a tiny lock. Apparently, the locals thought this was an invitation to lounge in the chairs on the porch and hang out all night . This was very unsettling!!
We are in a foreign place, with no one on sight after 9pm. No phone in your rooms in case of emergency and the hotel if completely open to the outside world.
I would recommend this hotel ONLY AFTER the owners put a gate at the front of the building or had some kind of security on the premises.
I feel so torn writing this review. We had such a nice time before this happened.
After careful thought we decided to leave the hotel and go elsewhere for the last 2 nights of our vacation. I couldn't take another night of this. We didn't sleep the whole night and ended up dealing with this half the next day!! I didn't want to waste any more of my (very limited) vacation time.!!

Go for it - whatever age you are. You've probably read about boutique hotels and always fancied one but feel you're getting on a bit and want the familiarity of a Hilton or Mariott all-in identikit resort. And looking at St Martin probably that's your first thought, let's play safe, after all it's my hard earned vacation and I don't want any surprises or worries. Well forget all that (and the couple of daft complaints about noise and crime further down) and book into Love - it's on the beach, the rooms are great (no tvs, big comfy bed, a nespresso coffee maker and fridge and walk in showers, the staff wonderful and Grand Caisse itself the gastronomical capital of not just the island but also probably the Caribbean. And you'll not only want to come back, but you'll also probably change your whole way of vacationing and dare to seek out more boutique hotels

The pictures on the website did NOT match what we got. We requested an ocean view, we got a view of the run-down, sketchy looking business across the street. The 2-story, 2 bedroom, room we were assigned (we only needed 1 of each) had a tiny, closet-size bathroom, which could only fit 1person in at a time, on the very hot and dark 2nd floor. This would have been very inconvenient in the middle of the night to have to go upstairs just to use the restroom. Also, we're not TV addicts, but to be able to watch a little news before bed or in the morning was not an option because there was NO TV. Wait, there's more. When we decided that this place was not at all like the pictures and what we requested, we politely said we wouldn't be staying and asked if we could have some kind of refund on our prepaid 5-day stay. We understood that we wouldn't get it all back as we had made our reservations 3 months earlier. However, before seeing the our room we paid for the remaining 4 days. Bad mistake! We'll never do that again!!! The manager even called the owner and asked if we could have a partial refund, she said NO! This is the first time we felt like we were really deceived. Needless to say, we left and had no desire to stay on the French side after that. We went to The Holland House on the Dutch side. That was EXCELLENT!!!!

Hello Again Mr & Ms Hobbiebrunken, We are again VERY sorry about your feeling about Grand Case ! You have already sent your feadback on the LOVE RESIDENCE and we have answered you. So we don't think that you need to do it on the LOVE HOTEL which you haven't been !!! That is why the pictures on the website did NOT match ( it's not the same building ). Please, trust us when we say that next time, stay in the French side ( specially Grand Case ! ) because you have missed the more AUTHENTIC area of our island. Again thank you and we hope that you will have a nice summer.

We stayed the first week on a villa on the Dutch side which was lovely. We planned to stay the last 2 nights at Chez Martine. We were impressed with the reviews on Trip Advisor. However, we did not have the wonderful experience that so many others described.
When we arrived, our reservations were not recorded, so we were not expected. We only spoke English and he only spoke French, but we were able to figure each other out. He gave us the choice of 2 rooms- both were simple and clean. However, both had been closed up a while and were VERY HOT. We turned the AC on and went to the beach which was very calm and quiet. After returning in a few hours, the room was not much cooler. We left at 6:00 to go over to Simpson Bay and participate on the Pub Crawl on the Celine- Well worth it as a side trip!!. When we returned about 11:30 pm, the whole place was TOTALLY dark (the restaurant was closed for renovations and we were the only ones at the hotel). We made our way up and found our room still very hot and a giant roach on the wall.
We decided to try and sleep and figure it out in the morning. After 20 minutes, the door started banging as if someone was tring to get in! We jumped out of bed and after a few minutes realized it was only the wind, but were sufficiently nervous. The door continued to creak and rattle- so with sweat soaked clothes we decided to pack up, head out and hope that we could find a place at midnight! All of Grand Case was deserted at this point and we headed to Marigot where we came across an open hotel and stayed there for our last 2 nights and it was only $30 more per night!
With language help from our new hotel we were able to get a refund for 1 night.

When you book a room at this hotel, make absolutely sure that you get a room upstairs and preferably beach-side. Our room, no.1, sat on the corridor along which clients approached the hotel's restaurant. So, we didn't gey any peace until about 2 a.m. Then, being next to the main road, we had to put up with the sound of clubbers returning home with their stereo's blaring loud, as they drove along the main street, on which the hotel is situated.
Furthermore, do not choose this place if you are looking for convenient access to shops or the airport. Grand Case is really in the middle of nowhere, with very few places open during the day.
The only selling point for this place is that it sits right on the beach, and I mean RIGHT ON THE BEACH! the room's decor and bathroom were tawdry and with a distinct feeling of being not quite clean.
An eyesore during the day, Grand Case at night transforms into a myriad of beautifully lit late-opening, boutiques and restaurants. However, the prices to eat at these venues is formidable and anyhow, why on earth would you come to the carribean to eat french Cuisine?!! Luckily, there a couple of cafes on the main strip where you can get local cuisine at an inexpensive price.
All in all, if you were going to stay on St. Martin's, itself a wretched dump of a destination, you would want to stay in Grand Case. Only because it is the only place that was not overly developed in a tasteless manner for mass tourism. There again, that isn't saying much! Save your money and go to Benidorm or some other Eurotrash destination, as you'll find the same stuff there as at St. Martin's, an absolutely awful destination!

I agree with Grant. Grand Case was very hard hit and the hotel is on the beach. The owners are good, fair-minded people.
No, our rooms do not have TV's.
Hello,
Sorry for the late answered.
We don't know about the review that you have read.
You know, all our guest are free to say whatever they want.
The only thing we can say is that we have 2 different kind of rooms : sea view or village side.
So if a guest choose a village side room ( which is less expencive ) when they book by themself, they are supprised that it is not a sea view.
So if you want to book a room, make sure you pick the right one and you will have no surprises.
Anyway, on TripAdvisor they are so many pictures that it's very easy to make your own opinion.
Thank you for your interest and we are looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Muriel.
To my knowledge, their rooms are not 1 or 2 bedroom, they're defined as # of people it can accommodate.ope this helps.
Great place to put your head for a couple of nights, in the middle of everything.
