We stayed a couple of nights, having travelled by motorbike. The staff were welcoming and very accommodating in helping us park our bikes where we had sight of them. The front car park has a steeply sloped entrance with poor visibility uphill when exiting but is well lit, the more spacious back car park is less steep entry but is less visible from the hotel.

Our room was a little tired in places but fine for what we needed. The bedlinen and towels were very clean and the bathroom looked more recently updated than the room itself. TV provided but a poor signal on many channels. Tea and coffee facilities and an alarm clock also provided.

Breakfast was included and was quite generous. It was good apart from the coffee, which really let the rest down. Our second day I took my own travel cafetiere down with me.

The staff were all friendly, chatty and helpful. During the heatwave they happily provided us with a fan for our room, and they certainly added to the pleasantness of our stay.

Fantastic food, weekend can be busy for Sunday lunch however I think this is a reflection of how good the food is. Homemade quality food, none of the frozen rubbish. Staff are pleasant and once we got to know them, you can see its a family run hotel which is nice and nothing too much bother.
Room was clean and spacious, tea and coffee making facilities in the room, very pleasant, bathroom was spotless.
Drink cost was as expected for a hotel, Carvery was £9.75 all you can eat and absolutely spot on.
I few things need to be updated due to the age of the property however you can not fault this place.
We even joined the Christmas event in the main hall, we were entertained with Soul Group and had a ball!
I will defiantly come back and recommend

This hotel was clean and comfortable. Brilliant value for money. The staff were all local Welsh people and they were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast we had in the morning was lovely. If your expecting a boutique hotel go elsewhere and pay their boutique prices. This hotel was far better value than the nearest travel lodge and in my opinion far better. I’d much rathe support a local business to the area I’m staying in. Thankyou Bessemar staff for a clean and trouble free overnight stay.

My experience of the Bessemer hotel for a 4 night stay
On booking in to the hotel I was informed that there was no key cards for the doors as there was an issue with the machine & we would have to be let in by a member of staff & that an engineer was booked to sort it , when we got to our room we found not clean , stains on the walls , bed was broken, a chair was broken , very antiquated and the noise from the kitchen . At 9 o'clock at night the noise that came from room 202 was absolutely horrendous so I went to reception to complain who did ring the room but never went up to the room so at 10 o'clock whilst the noise was still going we packed and went down to reception who informed us they was fully booked so could do nothing else for us so we booked out on the same day .we did try to find another place to stay in the valleys but all was fully booked due to something going on in the area whitch meant we had no option but to make a 6 hr journey back home to Norfolk the same day .and our holiday completely ruined I would strongly advise keeping clear of the Bessemer hotel it in serious need of a complete make over ,

Avoid like the plague. This hotel has seriously gone downhill. Shabby, tatty and grubby, in need of a complete refurbishment. If there is nowhere else available in Merthyr and you end up here, do not stay in Room 202. Bed very uncomfortable, and don't even look at the matress! The extractor fan for the kitchen is below the window and sounds like a train passing and the accompanying smell of cabbage or fry up - depending on the time of day - is definitely one to be avoided. Bathroom old fashioned with grubby shower curtain. Some parts of the skirting board missing and sticky light switches above the bed. Staff very unprofessional. Witnessed an argument between owners and staff in the bar area. The Welsh breakfast was cheap and nasty, breakfast staff miserable and again complaining. Shame really as this used to be a basic but welcoming, clean hotel. Staff used to be happy, now they look downtrodden. I understand that there are new owners so hopefully they will turn things around otherwise there is going to be the inevitable closure.

Well where do I begin?
Staff are just not remotely interested in their customers. Electronic door keys work on the odd occasion. Rooms are very dated with a major refurb needed. Floor boards creak unbelievably throughout the hotel. Empty bar bottles are tipped for refuse at 4am!
Meals are very strange... You don't get served together and at breakfast there's not a piece of fruit, whether fresh or tinned and breakfast times close earlier on a weekend than in the week!?
Veggie options were non existent and a poor chappie who was gluten free got buggar all as the didn't have any cereal or bread!
Don't bother at that cost you can stay at the Premier Inn with breakfast included.
These opinions are from my personal stay.

We visited for a Sunday carvery, which had been recommended to us by a couple of different people.
The first thing to say is the restaurant area was quite dated. Where we were sat was in a partitioned area, the partition being an old fashioned, strange looking wood and glass structure. The tables in that area are a bit too close together too.
I had pork and turkey, which was pretty good. Unfortunately the veg was way overcooked. Also, I noticed that when freshly prepared veg was brought through it was dumped on top of the veg that was already there.
£32.80 for two standard carveries and two pints of lime cordial is a bit too much considering what we were getting. Very disappointing.

Do not stay at this hotel if you want a restful night. Terrible noise in room 202 from fans below, reduced a bit in the night but still noticeable. Creaky floors being used by someone somewhere woke me at 2.45am. Pointed out the noise twice but nothing was done. Cheap mattress had seen better days and was lumpy. Dirty coffee cups at breakfast. Receptionist called me ‘darling’ all the time as if that made everything ok - but really she couldn’t have cared less. Stay anywhere else but here if at all possible!

The bad things about The Bessemer Hotel:
- it’s in the middle of a housing estate
- the room is noisy due to the kitchen fans running below the bedrooms
- it is dated and dirty
- it smells musty
- the sheets do not cover the mattress, so the filthy lumpy mattress is what you sleep on
- the bed barely stays together, is very unstable and very noisy squeaking when you move
- the headboard was not attached to the bed
- the bedside lights did not work
- the carpet was dirty
- there was no hot water when we returned to the hotel at 8pm
- the soap dispenser on the shower was broken and empty
- the toilet button stuck so constantly filling up
- the bathroom handle is broken and I got locked in
- the key cards to room did not work
- the main door to room did not lock
When we tried to ask the staff about the water situation he laughed and hung up the phone.
The manager refused to speak to customers as he was going to bed
The owners were present and refused to discuss any of the issues.

The good things about The Bessemer Hotel:
-

Honestly if I had the choice of this place or nothing it’s a no brainier.
Nothing would win every time.

HI Mel There is food on for most of the day depending what you want but evening full service is from 6.30 They do have an odd payment method no charges to the room you pay on leaving at a kiosk. Same with drinks cash only at the bar Watch out for breakfast as they start early Make sure you have a room away from the function room Cheers Paul

Do the rooms have a hairdryer and TV? Thank you
Answer from Leithris

Definitely a flat screen TV but not sure about a hair dryer. Easiest thing would be to give the hotel a quick telephone call to find out. Allow plenty of time for them to answer because staff multi-task at certain times of the day and they can be in a small office away from the reception area.
