Huge damp problem (for a very long time apparently, looking at the stains on the mirror and window), heating not working properly (for a bit after we asked, then the boiler gave up again apparently), only brutally hot water so no way to shower the kids, appliances and furniture in disrepair and/ or dirty. Not clean, dusty and mold, dirty windows, blood or snot stains in duvet cover, yuk. We did not dare to make tea, looked like a rodent had eaten the water maker and it was dirty.
Eyes and nose irritated and sour within 10 minutes, had a huge headache and even a nose bleed the following day. Never had such a reaction to dust.
No proper lock on the room, it would take a thief just seconds to get in the room, with easy access from the parking area that can be entered by anyone. Room should be closed till everything is sorted out, it is not healthy to stay there, especially for children.
We felt very unsafe, because of the lack of security and err... well those who were lurking around there. We barricaded the door with stuff.
Bad old bed, we did not get a lot of sleep. Air from kitchen was blown right into our room. Glass and rubbish was being dumped rather loud late at night by staff just a few meters from us, I almost jumped to the ceiling.
Could not wait to get out the next morning.
Reaction from staff: you have many complaints, I can't write them all down, send an e-mail to my manager. Pardon?! I'm not responsible for pointing out very obvious problems and why would I waste my time doing that while the hotel obviously does not care a single bit about anything. Still had to pay.
I can only warn other people.
1) Room door didnt lock - staff seemed confused as to why this was an issue and just suggested moving valuables into our friend's room. The door was never fixed as there was no member of staff who could fix it.......!?!
2) Dirt - the rooms were dirty, with thick layers of dust covering most surfaces, the sheets were dirty, the spare bed was badly stained, the walls were stained.
3) TV - didnt work.
4) Furniture - when a draw was opened the front of it fell right off. Desk was badly damaged.
5) Bathroom - on arrival there was a very large 'puddle' of water on the floor which we believe was rain water coming through the rotten sky light which wouldnt close.
6) Hot water - had to wait 5 minutes every day for a trickle of the hot/warm stuff.....
7) Breakfast - despite the awful table settings (which had no seating configuration to seat 4 people, despite us being the only people at breakfast!?!) was acceptable. Good to see a vege option.....
8) Attention to detail - we stayed in room "15" which had "5" on the door..... despite not being able to detail the room number accurately, they were able to clearly identify the wardrobe with a big "WARDROBE" sign on the wardrobe door, Just in case you were in any doubt as to why there was a rail and hangers in there? Pointless and baffling.......
9)Decor - lets just say that "dated" would be something for Treganna to strive for......
All in all a truly awful experience.
They may be memories of staying in the worst hotel and restaurant in Wales but at least you'll have something to tell the grandchildren
I had the displeasure of visiting this hotel recently and the food was not good – in fact it was very bad. For example - they seem to think that it’s okay to serve shop bought frozen quiche and pretend that’s its high class quality food. Well I’m afraid it’s not.
The service was also very bad with the waiting staff not really wanting to serve us and making the whole experience extremely bad. I know it’s sometimes hard to be pleasant all the time but when you are out for a meal one does like the waiter to at least smile and be polite.
What is such a shame is that I can remember it being such a good hotel when the Hurley family were there - now it’s just an embarrassment to Merthyr and should be closed down
Reception: unmanned and no bell to push so had to wait 'til someone happened by, want payment immediately on arrival before seeing the room, had to leave key on exit as again no staff.
Dark winding corridor to get to room, room (appropriately) named 'martyr.'
Room: initially not too bad and the height of chic in the 80's I suppose but then you notice the thick dusty cobwebs in the pelmet, the 3 black mould patches in the ceiling, the missing drawer handles, the toothpaste encrusted glass in the bathroom, the dirty shower curtain, the non working bathroom lights, the odd rug on the bathroom floor in front of the sink unit (with about 1/3 the veneer peeled off) which sinks when you step on it as it would seem the sink leaks, has rotted the floor and they have repaired it but placing a couple of laminate floor pieces over it and a rug. The few electrical items that actually have PAT testing stickers on the plugs are expired 2 years ago. The shower is the worst I have ever used, impossible to regulate the temperature correctly so you either have a freezing drip or a burn your skin off red hot blast which ran out and turned ice cold. At least the dusty Corby Trouser Press made a decent fist of my trousers and the TV was flatscreen. The icing on the cake and the reason I cannot give any more than 1/5 is that come bedtime we discovered that there was no mattress protector or dustcover, just a single sheet so we had the choice to sleep on the duvet or with everyone who has ever slept in that room, kinda negates the fact that the duvet and sheet and pillows were in fact clean.
Didn't eat there as only 3/5 on then food hygiene rating so cannot comment on the food.
In some ways its a pity that this place is suffering from poor maintenance and low standards as in the 70's & 80's it was by all accounts the place to go and was regarded as quite posh. Unfortunately now there are such things as Travelodges and Premier Inn's at the budget end of things which is where this hotel now pitches itself and having used the Premier Inn in Merthyr it is at least clean and often cheaper.
