The accommodation is basic but the room is clean. The shared showers and toilets are outside the house. Helen accommodated us with a fried rice for lunch upon arrival which was very welcome (even though a bit overpriced at 15 RM for a vegetarian fried rice with one egg). Unfortunately my partner got bitten by BED BUGS on his legs during the first night. We suspect they were in the heavy rug-like blanket because he put it on his legs during the night and the rest of his body is ok (I did not have any bites as I sleep in a liner). We left without saying anything (and without asking for refund even though it costs 24 EUR a night!) as the host were not in sight and we had to leave quickly. We did send a message (which was not received well as you can imagine) however to the hosts the next day. We wish them the best but have to warn fellow backpackers.

We stayed at Mulu Backpackers because of the good reviews. It is located in walking distance to the airport. It's a little farther away from the entrance to the National Park but still walkable. There might not be enough time to walk back and forth between the scheduled hikes though. We had a private room which was large; the showers/toilets are downstairs. Some of the days it's not possible to flush the toilets. It can become annoying. The owner (wife) tries to keep everything clean and in working condition. She is very nice. It's a basic accommodation with just cold water.

We stayed at this place for 4 nights (at a total cost of RM320 / £64 for all four nights for a private room plus breakfast). I couldn’t rate this highly enough. It’s a lovely little family run place by a river where you can swim or bathe, with a beautiful garden you can relax in. If you want dinner Helen will cook you some basic rice or noodles for RM10. We also got a load of clothes washed while we were there which was very cheap. Obviously at this price it is BASIC ACCOMMODATION so if you want luxury or air con book somewhere in the park (at probably 10 times the price!). But for me that was part of the charm, it was lovely living with a local family for a few days. Mulu gets very hot (it’s in the jungle) ... but there was a decent fan in the room that kept us cool enough. Basic toilets and cold water showers (trust me you won’t want a hot one!) that are super clean (they were cleaned every morning while we were there). There’s obviously no WiFi... but if you want WiFi then you probably shouldn’t go to the jungle on the back end of nowhere!! Personally I loved being completely off grid for four days, that was relaxing in itself, and the park is awesome. Would recommend Clearwater Revival adventure caving... just the right level of challenging / scary but very doable as long as you’re fit, not claustrophobic and don’t mind getting very wet and muddy!!

Good hostel to stay a couple of days when you visiting Mulu. Mulu is basically one road so no matter where you stay everything is within 15 minutes walk. This place is very close to the Airport but don't worry with only a couple flights a day and no night flights this will not bother you at all. Some General tips that you should know already: - No ATM bring cash - Expect rain and take appropriate clothing - No DATA signal (Only Maxis seem to get some data if your lucky) Other than that great place have fun.

I had a wonderful 3night stay with Helen and her husband, Peter. They picked me up from the airport when l arrived and were perfect hosts. Helen will do your washing for you for a small cost and cooked for us all one night when it was raining too hard to walk to the xxx are just outside the park which is a out one and a half kilometers. The beds are really comfy and everything is clean. Would highly recommend.

within 100 meters of the airport exit, clean, neat, good breakfasts, nice garden for taking pictures, riverside for a refreshing swim, and really super nice people. Well recommended if you are looking for basic but adequate lodging at Mulu.

Price: RM35 / night including breakfast Room: Spacious, a big room with many clean beds and floor. Only 3 fans though so it may get a lil stuffy if it's not a cool rainy night. But Helen runs the generator for most of the night till the guests start waking up, so usually the fans run till around 7am or so? Amenities: Toilets were clean, and bathing and clothes washing soaps are even provided (surprised)! Also, a line for hanging clothes is present, just that the constant heavy rain doesn't make drying easier... Food: Helen makes great pancakes for breakfast, and sometimes toast w egg. She can also whip up a meal if needed (yummy mixed vegs + chicken wings, RM12). But we ate most often in the HQ Cafe cos they have a large variety of choices and it's just bit pricier. Free water, tea & coffee is provided. Location: It's really near the airport, but that means it's also rather far from the HQ (2-3 mins drive, but around 10-20 mins walk?). Can be rather tiring to walk back after a long day of caving esp as it often rains in the night, but you get used to it + the great homestay makes it worthwhile. (Don't forget to bring your torches out for the walk back in the dark). Host: Helen is a really sweet and nice host! Not super great in English but manageable. Peter is nice too but he seem to have gotten annoyed w us cos we were hitching too many rides from him to the park lol... Signal: Hardly able to get signal / reception, but welcome to Mulu (excl HQ & Marriott). Booking: So yes, best to call them for booking but you can easily do a walk in too. We had a great stay and slept in a good clean double room. The owners are great and serve some food if you want. For the booking I would recommend to take a phone call. The internet is very bad in Mulu.

Basic but beautiful place to stay, Helen always has a smile and Peter is always up for a chat! Two fantastic people. 35 MYR breakfast incl, cheaper then Mulu NP. Close to airport, exit airport, turn right then home stay is on the left just 100m down the road. Book or just turn up, Helens NEW NUMBER is 01114075006 and Peter is 01135241007. Electricity from 6pm-6am like the rest of the town, all on generator, no wifi (bring a good book for after dark), BYO towel. Great stay, within walking distance of a few restaurants, no ATM so bring cash. National park is expensive to stay at and visit, the excursions are expensive.
