Starting with the good. The staff were very friendly and helpful and wanted to make our stay as wonderful as they could make it. The overall design and ambiance of the place is great, you can sit outside in gardens in the day (these days a bit of road noise unfortunately from just behind) and squeeze into the bar either in front of the log fire or in one of the little rooms around the back. The wood beams, old fashioned fittings all make it fun and a throwback to the days when we visited in the 1970’s. But after this it starts to slip.
The restaurant is like a cafeteria for breakfast. You sit in a sort of conservatory and go and help yourself to cling film covered fruit or yogurt. The coffee is middle range at best that you get from a warmer and for somewhere that should do an amazing cup of tea it just needs to do better for the price that you are paying for the rooms. When you go for dinner you come out of a wonderful bar area and sit in a dark dining room with portions screened off if there are few guests (there were not many eating). The food portions were 1980’s style lots of food which felt like a compromise for quality. While I would say there was nothing wrong with the roast beef there was not a lot to shout about. It just felt like Sunday lunch home cooking rather than a succulent restaurant beef with duck fat crispy potatoes. So the food is okay but nothing to write home about.
The room that we stayed in was a suite and not cheap. You enter up some narrow outside stairway and enter past another room into a lounge area which had potential but there was no focal point, it was just a large dim area with a table. The furnishings were average. After this you go through an attic area where you can only walk in the middle of the room because of the roof. There is a haphazard kitchen of sorts which is not usable but a helpful fridge. After this the room opens out into a large bedroom with 4 poster bed of sorts. It looks like it had drapery off the top at one point but for us it was just some wood structure. The room furnishings were average, the walls were in need of paint and repair and the room was musty. We found the source when we got into bed, the sheets needed airing. Unfortunately worse was to come. The bathroom was simply awful. The bath was about the size of a bucket, the shower was over it, the basin was old and partially serviceable and the toilet needed a PHD to work out how to flush it.
We had been looking forward to our stay so much and there is so much potential in the place. I really hope that the owners are doing proper renovations and also invest in the catering. At the moment I feel it is massively overpriced for what it is and until they learn that a cup of afternoon tea should be served with cold milk, not hot, they cannot be promoting an old piece of “Britishness”. Please, please sort it out and make it what it was many, many years ago when our family used to visit.

Didn’t get to sit outside due to plumbing. If you are seated outside, the foul odour could be smelled around the compound
We had the cookies set @ RM 28.00 and we had the smokehouse cream tea set @ RM 48.00. Food especially the cookies was smooth and buttery melt in the mouth. Cameron tea was served in the set while you can change into another tea or coffee as you like, at additional cost
Homemade cookies and strawberry jam was beautifully made and it was less sweet
However for the price we paid for the room, I expected a lot more (we also stayed in Melaka, Penang and KL on this trip and so have a good idea of what you should get for the price you pay), we did not stay in the main building but to the left in one of the probably more basic rooms. The mattress was hard and uncomfortable, the bathroom was very basic with black mould on the ceiling, the armchairs in the room were quite worn and look a bit dirty looking (probably because of age) and the wooden furniture also looked quite sad.
The food at the restaurant is average but they do give you a lot for breakfast (included in the price of the room). We ordered one double espresso one morning and were shocked at checkout to find out it cost 37 ringgit! All the other coffees we bought on this week long trip cost no more than 10 ringgit.

We enjoyed two delightful Beef Wellingtons and two roast chicken mains, which were generous portions and quite tasty. We started with the fresh mushroom soup and hot bread rolls.
The staff were jolly and attentive. At the end of the meal they ushered us into to the chintzy lounge to sink into the little floral sofas, whose springs were so knackered that we sat with our chins on our knees.
This is a fun pastiche of English colonial life from a bygone era, a little bit worn out and charming for all that. If you come expecting a Banyan Tree experience of self-importance and fussy food, you will miss the point of this old dowager.
We ate a hearty feast for RM 450 (abart seventy five parnds) which, according to a dog-eared copy of The Times from the Smokehouse lounge, is roughly the hourly rate of an ASLEF train driver in the UK these days, most of whom work from home.

The Inn dates back to 1939 when it was considered the ‘place to be seen’ for its beautiful gardens which continue today.
Do not come here expecting 5-star luxury. This property prides itself on remaining at its historical roots and that’s what makes it so charming. Sit in the gardens for the afternoon and enjoy High Tea or snuggle by the fire with a glass of red wine in the evening.
For us, the food was fantastic and reminded us so of our times in English pubs. The beef Wellington and pies melted in your mouth and the portions were enormous.
Don’t try and compare prices to KL as I’ve seen so many reviews do. The Cameron Highlands is miles away and isn’t easily accessible.
This hotel for us was like a warm hug the moment you stepped in the door. Living in Singapore, it was a joy to breathe cool mountain air and incredibly hearty food.

Sadly the rest of it is awful. We had the Warwick suite, the bathroom wasn’t very clean, especially around the base of the toilet. Hand held shower over the bath. Faded, dirty curtains, carpet, windows and chairs and the walls need painting. All the soft furnishings in the hotel need either cleaning or replacing, the rugs were disgusting. It looks like it hasn’t had a deep clean for many years.
The cooked breakfast was stone cold. We had one evening meal, the potions are generous but taste just ok. The breakfast waiters could have been smarter, one was wearing a camouflage jacket and wearing dirty worn out shoes. I appreciate that he may not have been able to afford anything else but surely the hotel could provide decent uniforms?
The photos on their website do not reflect what it’s actually like.
This is a 3 star hotel charging 5 star prices and it’s definitely not worth it. Complete rip off.
If you’re planning to visit expecting to smoke, you may end up disappointed. It’s best to update this detail to avoid unnecessary confusion and potential conflict.
On the plus side, their service and food are still excellent, which made for a pleasant meeting. However, for those considering the Smokehouse for similar purposes, make sure you’re aware of this updated policy.
Thanks again to the staff for maintaining a great experience otherwise!
This review emphasizes the smoking policy update while appreciating the overall quality of service.
I would give this place five out of five however there was quite a bit of building and maintenance happening around the resort while I was there and I did encounter some issues with the final bill which really put a dampener on what was a great few days. The resort did provide awareness of the building maintenance when we turned up at the resort as a courtesy. Final bill discrepancies were eventually rectified before departure however it was 30 mins on my last day that I didn't need to encounter and sort out. All in all, great stay and would definitely recommend to others.
Breakfast is included and is served in the conservatory. We enjoyed the breakfast every day, with a decent selection. However sometimes the service can be rather slow, as on our last day. The waffles were nice the first time around, but not the last day, and were rather dense. If I had time, I would have asked for a replacement.
We also enjoyed a drink in the bar, with a fireplace. Couldn't get a nice seat the next day so skipped the drink.
The suite with the living room is very spacious, with a poster bed. Two things to note: some of the rooms are facing the main room and can get lot of traffic noise. Secondly, the mattresses are rather firm, and not really to our liking. We felt like were sleeping on rocks.
Other than that, definitely a place to experience.
