If you are looking for fairly inexpensive accommodation with a fabulous location and great staff, The Cliff Ao Nang is for you.

We were not really sure what to expect as we had found and made the booking on line. We had also just spent a week in a 5 star luxury hotel in Thailand's deep south.

When we arrived at The Cliff, we were greeted with the warmest of welcome by the staff and offered cold drinks and towels.

The rooms are small semi-detached bungalows with open air bathrooms. The rooms are tiny with limited storage space, but they are rustic, comfortable and very charming. They have great air conditioning and were adequate for our needs. The open air bathroom was great. Taking a shower with the local ghekos is something I never thought I would do or woukd like, but it really was fun. There is a power socket, so you can use hairdryers etc. A word of warning is that the bathrooms are 'linked' as the bungalows are semi-detached. This could present 'privacy issues', but we never actually experienced any problems.

There are quite a lot of bungalows on this small site, but the place was never crowded, as most people tended to use it more as a base.

The hotel has a small pool with a handful of sunbeds. The pool area never got busy as most people, including ourselves, tended to go to nearby beaches or hired long-tail boats to go to the islands.

Breakfast was served on a little decked area outside your bungalow, at a time of your choice. The breakfast was excellent with a surprisingly wide choice of food. There is a restaurant, but we never actually ate there. The hotel is in a fabulous location with bars, shops and restaurants on your doorstep. You are really spoilt for choice. There are no loud bars close to the hotel, so the hotel maintains a lovely peaceful atmosphere.

The staff were great and nothing was too much trouble. They were really helpful and friendly. There is a security guard on duty at night (although I'm sure we were safe enough) and he would stop a tuk tuk for us if we didn't want to walk or were going to a restaurant a bit further out.

The hotel has one special 'villa room' which we stayed in for 2 nights. It was more expensive than the bungalows, but it was lovely to stay in for our last two nights. It is really spacious with a big indoor bathroom. It also has a little pond all the way round it which is filled with Koy Karp. It was lovely.

This hotel has a great location, in what is a reasonably busy resort. You have the choice of beaches, bars and restaurants within walking distance or you can take a tuk tuk to some of the less crowded beaches and fabulous 'local' thai seafood restaurants.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Cliff and would definately consider staying there again.

After reading reviews from trip advisor i was quite afraid that my stay would be awful at the cliff due to my booking being made before reading the reviews, to be honest, this hotel is slightly old, but staffs and receptionist are really friendly. Not to be recommended if youre looking for modern styled buildings, somehow my stay here is so far so good, felt like living in a peaceful cabin.

My wife and I stayed here from 5th March to 8th March ... We actually booked this hotel without going through the reviews..... When we did we almost cancelled our booking..
What an awful mistake that would have been. Our stay here was excellent and we simply loved the outdoor bathroom concept.
The receptionist were rather helpful and the receptionist in the evening shift was very helpful whenever we needed her assistance ... Eventful and enjoyed the stay here

The only downside were mosquitoes but some mosquito coils did the trick

There should be a -100 rating for this. I'm only giving it one star because it won't let this review through otherwise.

Overbooking seems to be a common problem here. We arrived from the airport and presented our confirmation email for our 5 night stay. Staff told us they were full and had no rooms for us. They did not suggest any alternative or resolution until we prompted them to do so. Requests to see their manager was in vain, one lady told us the manager stepped out for lunch awhile, while another said the manager's offday was today.

All five of my family members stood around for 2 hours while the reception staff kept telling us they could not reach Hotel Club (our booking agency) and that their front desk phone could not make international calls (for us to call HotelClub ourselves). They spoke minimal English and trying to communicate our concerns and requirements was very difficult.

After a very frustrating long while, we had to eventually make the overseas phone call from our own mobile phone and basically settle their incompetence ourselves.

Eventually when they finally got their act together, they blamed it on Hotel Club not sending the reservation through, while HotelClub told us they overbooked themselves for the first two nights we were supposed to stay there.

The Cliff frontdesk people suggested staying elsewhere for the first two nights and coming back to stay with them for the remaining 3 nights. However we did not want to unpack and move around multiple times. The alternative accommodation they suggested and described as 'very beautiful' looked horrible on tripadvisor and had terrible reviews too.

It was an incredibly frustrating experience with The Cliff and their staff. Especially in a season where most hotels are full and a confirmation email and payment made a month in advance means nothing to The Cliff's management.

My advice is to go somewhere else and save yourself the heartache. Their focus is on profit at their convenience, not on the customer.

We came to this hotel after 20 hours of travelling, we just wanted to check in and take a shower. But the lady at the reception told us they had no available rooms, allthough we did have a confirmation email from Them. They told us they had another room, But we had to pay 1500 baht Extra Per Night. Of course there was no Way we were gonna Do that. We tried to Explain Them that normal procedure is to put us at the other room and not charge Extra, or as an alternative they could book another hotel for us. They wouldn't do neither one for us - the result were us standing there for 2,5 hours after a long travel Without being offered Anything to drink or eat.
We tried to Call the booking agency, which we had to do from our own phone at a very High Price!
At the end no one were able nor willing to help us, so we had to find another hotel - and glad we did! We are NEVER ever Coming back.
The hotel looked cheasy, dirty and nasty anyway, so we Would probably end up getting sick after all!
I wouldn't recommend this even to my biggest enemy!

I agree with the previous comment for this place.

The room includes a double bed with a meter of space around three sides. In this space is a tv stand and a wardrobe, which leaves very little room to be in. In such a small space, where do you put your luggage so that you don't trip over it?

Very bright security lighting at night may allow you to find your room at night, however, they are set up so that the light shines right into your room. Throughout the night, with the blinds fully drawn, our room was so well lit by the outside security lighting, that you could read by it. This kept us awake each night.

The staff, although they had the requisite fake thai smile, couldn't have cared less about this situation .

As there is no room inside, you are forced to sit outside on the tiny balcony for your breakfast. Bees are attracted to honey and jam so our breakfast each day was spent amongst a swarm. Not very relaxing or enjoyable.

The resort is a long, long walk from the beach and well overpriced for the location and the pathetic room that you get. We would not stay here again and would recommend looking for a better serviced property closer to the action.

Stayed in the hotel for 2nights. The open concept toilet is super dirty and there are centipedes and cockroaches around. The wooden door knock broke off and the interior was not well litted as the fuse blown off. Beware of their curtain by the door. It was so thin that could be seen thru frm the outside.

Really a no-no for this hotel! The worse hotel stay I've ever experience!

My daughter & I had booked online for 3 nights, 31st Mar-2nd April 2013. I had read that the rooms were small but that wasnt going to bother me.
What DID bother me was the hotel was nothing like the website photos at all,no tea & coffee making facilities in the room, TOILET did not work, the phone did not work, the doors did NOT LOCK at all you could just push them open!
For two females travelling alone, doors that lock are essential, we were that nervous the first night we didnt changed into our nightwear & slept a few hours fully clothed. At 1am we booked another hotel online. We asked for only a refund of the surcharge which was 3000 baht, I did not want a refund for the three nights. Well 10 days & about 6 emails sent we have not received any responce regatding the refund, infact my emails keep coming back saying their mailbox is full, I am wondering if they have blocked my emails??????
I do not recommend staying at this hotel at all, it is not what it says it is. I love Thailand & its people & this is the first time I have had any issues whatsoever. Shame.
Please give us our refund of 3000 baht, you have the money for the 3 nights anyway. :(

My wife and i stayed at this hotel in october'06 for 5 nights. It is deceiving from outside as u enter the hotel, because the entrance does not complement the hotel at all. But once u r in, that place i thought was different, very unique and friendliest hotel and u could almost say exclusive resort for honeymooners.

Hotel.....

Was as i described it above. Room is very tastefully decorated may be a bit small, could do with a table space, bathroom a unique situated outside, yes, outside the room. again very tastefully done. Food, breakfast excellent. It also has free internet which is very useful, not only because it is free but the convenience of it, and for laptop users it is also a wireless hot spot.

Staff....

The most attentive and friendliest staff i have ever had. Especially a beautiful young lady called Mae at the reception is a credit to the cliff resort. So polite, pretty good english and most importantly very efficient. Keep it up Mae.

Location....

5 minutes walk to Ao nang beach. all other amenities are withi few minutes walk. Shops, restaurants 35 barts. a kilo laundry incl ironing ect.

Recommended activities......

Walk down to beach and take a 40 bart, 10 min.boat trip to Railey beach, a better beach to spend a day and not forgetting walking to Phranang beach(Railey west beach) 15 minute walk.

Phi Phi Don island day trip a must, 700 barts, hotel pick-up and drop off incl.

Puca island, Chicken Island and Tup island 3 in 1 island trip for
800 barts.incl. a basib lunch.

A day trip to Krabi town is also one to do for a few hours, wait on the main road and take a white coloured so called bus, 12 seater open, every 20 mins.approx. u cannot miss it as they hoot at you when driving around its routr, it costs 60 barts and takes 25 mins.
Shopping place in Krabi is the Vogue plaza. Also dont forget to walk to the harbour just a few mins. from here. Its not a very big town.

After reading lots of reviews on hotels in krabi me and my husband settled on The Cliff for our 10 days in Ao Nang !! We had read that the location was abit misleading from the website but as it turned out the hotel is situated at the top end of the main road that runs straight down to the beach front. It's a 10 min walk or 40baht tuk tuk ride!! There's lots of shops, bars, restaurants on the way to keep you busy..... The Cliff resort is very beautiful, secluded and quiet , which to be honest was ideal as you can see that some of the hotels further down the road by the bars etc could be abit noisy at night!! (depending on what you want.....)

The rooms are small and thank god we didnt take much luggage as there is only one wardrobe with 4 hangers and a draw underneath , no other storage !! There is a safe. loved the outdoor bathroom , Only had one scary moment when a frog decided to join me in the shower one morning , i think the whole resort knew about that.....!

The staff are brilliant , so helpfull and kind, always happy to answer our questions and give advice on what to do for days out. We booked 3 tours at the hotel as it was cheaper than the tour offices down the road and you could charge it to your room bill. We did elephant trekking (2hrs), Hong Island and phi phi tour both by speed boat ! great days out. For the 4 islands tour we hired a long tail boat for the day so we could please ourselves how long we wanted on each island and that was 1800 baht. (appx £26 for 6 hours ).

The restaurant food is very nice and even got to have a cooking lesson with the chef one lunch time. The only negative thing i would say is as it is a small resort there are only 7 sun loungers around the pool and these were all gone by 9am but to be honest we only sat around the pool for 2 days out of 10 as the beaches are so fab. Go to railey beach which is only a 10 min longtail ride as ao nang beach is not that nice !!
We would thoroughly recommend krabi and the cliff resort - we had a fantastic time there!!!
