We returned at the end of March 2005 from a week at the Somkiet Buri Resort, which is an up-market resort hotel in Ao Nang. It is in a tropical setting which helps to keep the heat down by a degree or two. Our standard bedroom with king-size bed and en-suite bathroom was more than ample for our needs, being spacious, comfortable and clean. There was a free basket of fresh fruit and two free bottles of drinking water in our room every day. The room had a large balcony furnished with two lounger whicker chairs and a small coffee table.

The staff were helpful and friendly but not intrusive. A buffet breakfast was included with ample selections of soft drinks, tea and/or coffee, toaster, butter, marmalade, cereals, fried eggs, rice, noodles, french toast, american pancakes and syrup. Lunch is served either at the restaurant or the pool and dinner is available in the evening, both reasonably priced.

The pool was lovely and also shaded by trees which was absolutely necessary. The water was an ideal temperature being neither cold nor warm.

The hotel is on a main road but set well back down a short drive. We did not hear any traffic noise, or noise from other hotels at all. In that respect it is quite secluded. The walk to the beach takes about 10 minutes and there are many places of all kinds to eat only a few seconds away.

Tuk tuks are plentiful and cheap and a good way of getting around.

Resort grounds are absolutely stunning & the spa is wonderful. I have never seen anyplace like it. The Somkiet Buri really is paradise-like. The room itself was beautiful and had a gorgeous balcony, however, the room entrance was on a lagoon which had a bit of a methane stench that would occaisionally waft in.

Other than that, couldn't ask for better.

We (a middle-aged Norwegian couple)stayed at Somkiet Buri for 22 nights in jan/febr 2006. We made our choice after reading earlier reports. We were not disappointed. The Hotel-exterior-interiors-staff and restaurant were absolutely supreme.Instead of a detailed lyrical description about the lush tropical garden, the spacious clean rooms and the romantic ,cheap, restaurant we will conclude: In this price range we do not think You can make a better buy in Ao Nang. We give it the highest recommendation and will definitely come back.

This may seem odd, but was just going through our pictures of our 2002 Thai vacation and had to write a review. That's how much we loved Somkiet.

If the management is the same, the hotel service was wonderful, discreet, and helpful. The rooms were immaculate and comfortable. The pool was so beautiful and the grounds were something we never expected. At the time, it was the low season and we only paid $38/night. It was SHOCKING as backpackers to get a place so wonderful for so cheap. We ate at the hotel restaurant every night and it was great.

The only "down" side is that it was a muslim hotel and therefore didn't serve alchohol.

This was a quiet place meant for relaxing. If you're looking for active nightlife, you'll have to go into town (a short ride off).

Your mouths will drop open when you enter from the front desk into the grounds. That, I can guarantee you.

We would go back tomorrow if we could. I'm jealous of anyone planning to go!!!!!

The hotel was not affected by the tsunami at all. Internet cafes and bars are a short walk or taxi ride away. In 2002, there was a lot of infrastructure construction going on (paving roads, adding sidewalks) and we still had a great time.

The staff problems..surly reception, strangely distant service and the poor maintenance and hit and miss cleanliness relate directly to the fact the resort is muslim owned/managed. Wandering up to a Muslim staff member in a bikini will naturally produce a less than enthusiastic reaction. Once you realise this, (I copped on after seeing the arrow pointing to Mecca helpfully painted on the ceiling of my room), you will get better service if you approach someone of your own sex and cover yourself to and from the pool. The setting is lovely and especially enjoyable in the very hot months as it is a little oasis in the centre of Ao Nang. Food is dire but the spa lady is lovely (Buddhist of course or she wouldn't be massaging you!). If you are a backpacker and looking to spoil yourself within a budget go for it..if you are a luxury hotel type forget it.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights at the end of our stay in ao nang. The second night a rat ran across our room in the evening. We went immediately to reception to be told "they had no other rooms and the manager wouldn't be back till 8 am". We got no apology at all. We then couldn't find anywhere else to stay so had to stay in that room. The rat ran around our room every time we turned the light off. We did not sleep a wink. The next morning the manager was nowhere to be found. We spoke with her on the phone and she offered to deal with us via email. The reception staff were rude and seemed to find the experience entertaining. We have emailed many times since with no response as I feel the very least that they could do would be to refund us. Have never had a worse experience and have stayed in hotels all over the world. Appalling.

Wife and I stayed for 8 nights in March 2006. Great small hotel, staff keep a distance, rooms more than adequate, and a good location short walk from beach and bars/restauarants.
Couple of negative comments:-
Swimming pool has only 8, yes 8 places to sit down. On more than one occassion we could not sit by the pool. Pool itself was good though.
Breakfast, no exaggeration, was the worst I have ever had. It was simply awful. In the 8 days we had it the 1st day and thats it - you will find out. Plenty of local restaurants you can get a cheap breakfast from though.
Room maids are good but dont understand one bit 'do not disturb'.

All in all i would definately recommend this resort, very relaxing. The restaurant in the hotel is worth visiting for dinner (not brekkie!!), and although close to some loud bars you cannot hear them at all until you walk out of resort. Just be aware of the pool and brekkie situation.

Ao Nang is a very busy town. This hotel is truly steps away from it all but is a quiet oasis. We booked the family room which is huge, and loved the pool.
I must address the recent negative reviews. I'm not sure what was so irritating to these people. We were very satisfied. I am wary of reviewers who spend their precious vacation time taking pictures of peeling paint or cracked tiles. The hotel is not 5 star but it's lovely.
The staff were fine. I don't need them waiting on me hand and foot. They helped us out with miscellaneous minor things when we asked. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant. It was mostly deserted. They could use a liquor license. Plus the out-of-the-way location does not draw diners into the street. As noted by others you can get your alcohol at the 711 or minimart a few steps away and have it in your room or by the pool.
The buffet breakfast was totally fine, except the coffee was not very hot and the cups were too small. These are minor complaints. We would definitely stay here again.

Just returned from my first trip to Thailand with stays at Bangkok, Krabi and Phuket.

I booked this hotel based on the good reviews and excellent value for money. We booked one of the larger rooms which I must admit was a really good size with a nice view overlooking the pool. You really do feel quite secluded in the hotel as it is so set back from the main road within what many would call a mini rainforest. It did rain on a few days but sitting on the balcony with such magnificent views did help us to overlook the bad weather!

Check in was good although I do feel that more could have been done to welcome us to the hotel. You get used to friendly hosts in Thailand so this was a bit of a let down.

The restaurant was fantastic in the evening with prices competing very well with those on the street. However, the breakfast was very poor and was worth missing. You should also note that they dont serve alcohol in the hotel but you can bring your own for meals.

Check out was the major negative of the trip. The lady checking us out who I beleive to be the mangager was clearly only concerned about her money, not about our stay. She tapped in a few figures on her calculator and shoved it in our faces, not even explaining what it was for. Apparanlty we drank water from the minibar which wasnt free - no big deal, it was less than £1. But then she also added on 1000 bhat for airport transfer, which we did not have. After checking her files she did take this off.

We also booked a boat to take us from the hotel to Phuket. The van arrived for us and we were told that we had no tickets. We did book them with reception the previous day and paid for them on checkout. I had to go back to recption to query this. The manager was most put out by me asking for my tickets. She pointed at us to talk to somebody else whilst she walked away with a friend. After spending 4 days in the hotel I was most upset by her actions.

The other problem related to my mobile phone. This went missing from my room at checkout. I did try to call it but it had been switched off once it was stolen. The manager wasnt in the least bit concerned and didnt even come to recpetion to discuss the issue. So it wasnt a happy ending to a good stay at the hotel.

Please read my reviews on dream hotel bangkok and Karona resort in Phuket for happier endings!

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of days prior to our transfer to Phi Phi. I wish now we'd booked for longer as there is plenty to do in Ao Nang and this hotel is in a good central location. The jungle-like grounds are a welcome respite from the busy resort just a few minutes walk away. Rooms are spacious, clean and nicely decorated. We stayed in a first floor room which was light and airy, but can understand why previous writers have said rooms are gloomy as the ground floor rooms look out on to the thick foliage that surround the walkways. The pool is very attractive and the pavilion outdoor restaurant is beautiful in the evening. Food's good and not too pricey and the hotel was good value for money.
