Sunset Plaza Beach Resort garners compliments for its friendly and attentive staff, as well as its cleanliness, which extends to well-kept rooms and public areas. However, some guests have encountered delays with service and maintenance problems. The hotel's prime location and ocean views are highlights for many, though a few have voiced concerns over noise disturbances and the value proposition, citing high costs and less-than-ideal amenities. While the lively atmosphere and specialty nights are a hit, travelers are divided on the hotel's ambiance and have noted a need for quieter spaces.

We’ve been going to Mexico for 30 years, favorite by far ..this resort is smaller more intimate .. very nice feel ..Ala carte all inclusive food. Choices are very good, quality is good. Coffee shop offers really good fresh fruit, vegetables and pastries. Alex makes great pizzas next to the bakery. Breakfast and lunch choices are good much better than we’ve experienced elsewhere..wait staff is amazing .. Luis, Rolando,Miguel, Jorge, Gabriel, Issac, Juvencio,Alex. bartender restaurant am I didn’t get his name.. awesome service!! Raymundo front very helpful !! Checkin pleasant except for delay due to room not being available .. first to be greeted by someone who isn’t irritated with checking guests in.
Suggestions: bring own shampoo, conditioner, body wash. Resort provides this in tiny bottles but quality not good or anything you would want to use. Liquid hand soap as well bring unless you like bar soap that’s provided. Bring ear plugs as noise travels if you have a family of young children next door who are screamers, yellers, like to slam doors or run around the room, resort great with asking them to turn this noise level down a bit. Rope around chairs on the beach keeping venders at a distance, loved this, but rope removed after a couple days so venders allowed to ask you over and over if you wanted to buy as well as guests next door where almost no seating or shade was available coming over to use the chairs and palapas. Tourists staying inland brought their chairs and umbrellas to use the beach in front of the resort would ask guests to get drinks for them, which isn’t okay as they aren’t guests at the resort and should pay like the rest of us for what they want.
Resort is smaller and quieter which we loved. One towel per person so bring a Turkish towel if you want more. Towels can be switched out all day long as staff comes around to do this. Wait staff so awesome one would never need to leave their chair, bringing drinks water food to you!
Chilly first thing am, bring a sweatshirt for mornings and evenings, warms up quickly. Aqua socks as the sand that’s been brought in after the hurricane damage is rocky and painful to walk on. Landscape is severely changed after this hurricane. Miles and miles of easy morning walks harder now with the sand quality rocks ect. Saw whales mid way in the week swim by amazing sight! Less jet skies and motor boats guess one would see them more often .

We just returned from our three week stay at Sunset Plaza, a beautiful destination we call "home away from home". This was the fifth year we have statyed at Sunset, and the resort manager, Javier, and his awsome staff, continue to exceed all possible expectations we could have. This is why we will only stay at Sunset. Our room was spacious, had beautiful views, and the house keeping staff (Yessenia), were incredible. Our room always had the beautiful fragerance of citrus when the house keeper provided daily turn down service.
The moment we arrived from the airport, we were greeted by our butler, Alfredo, who was determined to meet our every need. The resort manager, Javier, is truly one of a kind and is beyond exceptional in his commitment to insuring your stay is unforgettable. The Mirador resturant and pool bar is wonderful with great breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. The staff at the Mirador are truly exemplary. When you first approach the resturant, Victoria, is going to seat you at your choice of table, offer coffee and/or Mimosas, place your napkin in your lap and start your meal with a delight. The pool wait staff are equally incredible, Adalberto, Luis, Yair, Saul, Crescendio, and Jumercindo, just to mention a few, are always keeping an eye to be sure your refreshments are filled with very little wait. Wait staff in the resturant are a delight. Rolando, Carlos, and Antonio, were amazing and met our every desire. The lobby bar is very nicely furnished and Sharon is genuinely a delight. As I stated earlier, Javier and his wonderful staff, are the reason we will continue to stay at the Sunset Plaza (our home away from home). Yesterday, when we were ready to return home, many of the staff saw we were checking out and expressed there genuine care for us and their looking forward to our return next February 2021. Not to be repeatative, but we will never stay anywhere else, the service is that top rate. It is our pleasure and privledge to call the Sunset Plaza and the staff, our "dearest" friends.

great staff (Mario and Yair are standouts), good food at the restaurants, 2 nights weekly (Sat and Wed) they shut down restaurants and have buffet by pool where food is okay, No evening entertainment except guitar band during buffet nights, quieter resort with fewer activities than some all inclusives, very clean, rooms are average with mini fridge full of soda and beer, some noise from the neighbouring resort will spill and can be heard in the rooms at night until 10:30pm, construction of new tower continues into summer 2021 but not really bothersome. staff adheres strictly to covid rules, get to pool early and grab your chair by 9am. beach is sandy and about average for area, location provides beautiful sunsets, Location is close to Macelon/Romantic zone which provide you plenty of options for safe evening entertainment. Taxi ride is 85 pesos from hotel. Taxi ride from airport to hotel is 120 pesos , pools are heated and very comfortable, Resort has an adult pool. Swim up bar is located in the larger general kid friendly pool. lobby bar is open until midnight and is a gathering spot for guests after dinner however offers no entertainment, Resort serves wine from Spain. It is okay table wine, Bar offers some popular brands of liquor, the gym is supper clean and offers both cardio and weight machines, Coffee shop is open 24/7 providing snacks, deserts, smoothies, and coffee. This resort offers great value for money. I rank it 4.2 / 5.

Our one-bedroom timeshare unit was large with bathrooms both with showers and a partial kitchen in which we ate breakfasts but because I had come down with a severe cold just prior to departure we ended up eating at the resort much more than we would normally but we found the food good and very reasonably priced when compared to other outside establishments and other resorts we have stayed at in the past

The outstanding feature for us was the staff. They were always attentive, helpful and friendly. One in particular I would like to mention was Mario, a member of the recreation staff. As I was basically confined to doing nothing, not once going in the ocean or even the pools, I had plenty of time to observe him and many of the other staff. Mario took guests kayaking, did bartender and cooking courses with them, played a guest table tennis and even did a Spanish lesson with one guest. He looked like he really enjoyed his job and was good at it. There were a number of children at the resort and there were daily activities set up for them in a dedicated space.

The beach was clean as was the water but it was relatively narrow in this particular area of resorts and thus had a significant slope making it less appealing for long strolls as we've had at other destinations. Further north at Nueve Vallarta, where we went for a walk, the beach was much more conducive to long walks or jogs.

Finally, as for the construction, after the first day I got used to the construction noise and becasue there was little else for me to do I actually found it more entertaining to watch it than the tourists sitting around the pool reading their books and drinking their drinks. I was surprised in the number of guests we met that were returnees and staying for extended stays. None mentioned the noise. The rooms themselves were very quiet.

Service here is top notch. We stayed a week and this is my second visit. 180 views of the Bay and a great central location to the airport, marina, Malécon, and Zona Romantica are 5-10 minutes taxi each way.
Celia at the front was a great welcome host, offering discounts on all tours and spa if you sit through a property presentation but we opted not and she wasn’t pushy. Sharon at the lobby bar is my favorite! She’s the best, tip her well! Marisa at the spa was AMAZING and worth every penny. I opted for the package special: massage, facial, body scrub and she was attentive and intuitive. I will book with her again on our next visit. Not being a big drinker, I’m not sure the all-inclusive is valuable when there is so much great local food nearby, but it felt lux to sign up for one day, and all the food and drinks have been delicious. Armando took great care of us around the adult pool. The pizza guy was so nice! I would highly recommend this resort. **just know that there is construction happening to expand the property from 8am-7pm, so if you’re wanting to bask in peace, give it a couple months, because Sunday is the only day construction is not happening**

The hotel staff was wonderfully accomodating, which really helped me feel relaxed during my stay. I asked for a quiet room, and they gave me a corner room on the furthest side from the construction. I loved the view from thr balcony. It was a dream being able to fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing every night. The pool was at a perfect temperature where I could slip right in without needing to adjust. I spent my mornings sitting beachside, and took a quick Uber ride into town in the afternoons. The food was decent. Nothing to write home about, but good enough. I only stayed for 3 nights but the staff members started to address me by name, which I found impressive. As for the construction noise... yes it’s there, but it never really bothered me. I live in a big city so I think my brain automatically tunes it out. I am already scanning my schedule to see when I can return to this resort. It was truly a lovely experience.

This is our second time staying at the Sunset Plaza Beach Resort & Spa, and we had a fantastic time! It was our 2nd honeymoon and we decided to head back to the only resort we ever felt offered everything we were looking for; great restaurants, outstanding customer service, friendly fellow travelers, and thoughtful amenities.

Each day our daily pool bartender (Jesus, Armando -to name a few), all restaurant servers and Mario, the events coordinator, were considerate and went above and beyond to make our time at the Sunset Plaza memorable and relaxing.

Every meal we had was delicious and fresh. My husband and I are vegans and there was never a problem in preparing our meals accordingly. I have been to huge compound resorts where getting anything cooked without meat or dairy was a veritable challenge. That was another thing we love about Sunset, the resort is a great size where you can get anywhere easily and quickly without having to wait and take a golf cart everywhere.

Our King Suite was AMAZE!! Ocean view, huge balcony, full size kitchen with all the cooking amenities needed to prepare your own meals. The room was a lovely surprise considering we have travelled extensively and rarely see such a large living space.

To top it off, we ended up leaving a lovely photo momento of the Rhythm of the Nights tour in our hotel room and I immediately emailed the resort explaining what had happened. Javier (resort manager) was so efficient and prompt in letting me know they had found our photo and would mail it to us in AZ!! That was such an above and beyond service that really rounded out our experience at the Sunset Plaza Beach Resort. A definite must go/stay! <3

How lucky we came to Sunset Plaza! Every room has ocean view! We booked single room with 2 Queen Beds and balcony and after a few days were upgraded to a suite with 2 separate rooms. Marina and Samantha managed all the coordination for our excursions (ATV tour of the mountains, Sunset cruise to Rhythm of the Nights and Islas Marietas) and Marina was most helpful with all our questions making navigating the local area comfortable.
We walked to MalecĂłn and hubby enjoyed the oysters along the beach and we explored some local stores and shops and pool hall.
The food was wonderful with many selections - pizza, calzones, finer dining Sword Fish, Salmon bruschetta, delicious salads and Mexican dishes that we don’t get at home.
We had the pleasure of a personal romantic dinner the beach with Alex and son playing romantic Spanish Guitar and grilled lobster and octopus and fresh vegetables. Thanks to Javier, Diego, Yair and crew for helping put this together... much less another amazing sunset.
Warm and friendly staff keep pools and hot tubs clean and fresh drinks coming - alcohol and non-alcohol drinks. Mario and Fernando keep the poolside activities fun and friendly. This resort serves families and couples.
Nighttime accordion and guitar music by Guilio was special and many enjoyed seeing him return during the week we spent here.
Food & drinks are wonderful. location is amazing and easy to access airport and city access by walking just outside of hotel. We will surely be back! Thanking a few more of the outstanding staff that helped make our stay special ... Fransisco, Alan, Ishmael, Rolando, Martin, Samuel, Luis & Erika.

We stayed for a week, the room was really great with a full kitchen. all rooms look out on the Bay of Banderas and have spectacular views. The service at every level was 5 star. We especially appreciated working with Celia on booking tours (she is fabulous and so kind). Every one of the butlers was top notch and very helpful. Three restaurants are on campus and we tried two - both were very good and reasonably priced. Be aware that they are in construction of a new multistory wing so construction noise runs 7a-7p and it can be tiring at times. Centrally located and cabs are quite reasonable to any of the downtown destinations. The butlers will coach you on what to pay for the cab so you don't get tricked by the drivers.

The resort is on the very north end of the beach zone in a small enclave of Pelicanos resorts. There is a small shopping mall, a few standard souviner shops, etc in the area. The hotel is at the end of a long driveway and has a gated entryway. The south end/wing of the hotel is completely under construction most of the day.

The construction work is covered with giant netting, and one jauzzi spa located in that area is not in service.

The jacuzzis are nice and large. Not many people using them when i was there.
The resort is small and personable, all the food was ala carte and I never made reservations to eat in the formal resturants.

Aside from the asian themed food, the meals were fine. The sushi rice and seaweed (nori) was (were) tough and over cooked but meh. next. I never felt ill after eating.
The service was great, the butlers were very helpful. When I needed more coffee because i drink more than two packets a day, my butler got me some actual ground coffee to use in the coffee maker, as here was a filter basket. Outstanding.

The adult pool was warm and quiet, the beach is walkable almost into town, once you politely tell the vendors that you are not intereted they leave you alone, and the sunsets are very very pretty.

The room was simple with no extra flourishes, I was on the third floor and had two double beds, lots of pillows, two blankets and a mini bar. Normal hotel bathroom, nothing spectacular.

AND the walls are very. very.thin. I could hear the children in the next room opening bags of potato chips. Complete converstations at normal levels could be heard through the walls.

The nightly entertainment in the courtyard for dinner and after dinner sails upward.

The hotel next door held musical events every night that could clearly be heard into the wee hours by me, with my doors closed, with the TV on and someone's kids next door eating packaged goods.

The hotels located on either side of the Sunset celebrate with wild abandon and the fiesta can be heard all over, until everyone at the party goes to bed. If you can get over the thin walls and the party noise from the neighboring resorts, this is a simple, loud and accommodating stay.
