There are many reasons why I would never come back. Here is order of importance. 1. We reserved an airport shuttle the night before we left. We reconfirmed twice with the front desk, including morning of departure. At the time our taxi was supposed to arrive the bell boy informed us that they had not ordered our taxi, and now the price was double! DOUBLE! 2. Bellboy was mad we didn’t take his bait and switch and then left with no offer to help with the bags. (Stairs only - no ramp).. 3. The a/c did not work 2/5 nights we were there. 4. There is basically no beach left at the hotel. Not their fault of course.

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed here twice. In February 2017 for our honeymoon and again in February 2022 with our two small children. We LOVE it here. In 2017 we stayed in the panorama suite which is absolutely gorgeous. It feels like you're on a cruise ship you are right over the water. The bed was also so comfortable that I actually emailed corporate after our trip asking for details on it haha. In 2022 we stayed in a standard room and it was also so beautiful. I don't think there's a bad room in the entire place. The staff is absolutely lovely and the food and drinks are good as well. The location is 10/10 and you can walk to many restaurants and shops. The beach is hit or miss but you can easily walk to the public beach that has a bigger footprint. I would recommend and we will be back.

This hotel is on 8th North and right in the middle of the action in Playa del Carmen. If you want to be close to all of the restaurants and shops this is an ideal location. The hotel promoted itself as a five star, Hyatt Hotel - but in my opinion, it’s in need of a lot of work and maintenance. Even a little bit shabby in some places. For instance, the glass screen on our 2nd floor balcony deck was held together with rusty brackets, and looked pretty dangerous. Lots of areas of rusty and unpainted metal and a tired looking building. The hotel charges you for some extra room items. For example if you use more than the two coffee capsules supplied per day, you can order more from the front desk, but they charge you. They charge you for additional bottles of water too, if you drink more than two supplied on a daily basis. Which is a little cheap given it was $400 per night. The hotel is right on the beach, but make sure you get there early as they do not have enough loungers for all hotel guests to use. They do have a cute, small pool with sun loungers and cabanas but again, space is limited. The bar staff were friendly and pool bar drinks were generous. We did not find the hotel food to be good at all. We had lunch in the restaurant, and ordered nachos. The cheese on the nachos was liquid “Cheese Whiz”, which was incredibly disappointing. We also ordered room service on our first night, as we arrived late. The club sandwich was tasteless, the salad was a weird construction of beetroots, apple and lettuce with very little dressing. The person that delivered the room service food, asked for a tip in cash because “it would be better for him“ which was strange to say the least. The hotel takes advantage of the fact that it’s in central PDC and doesn’t do a good job with food. Luckily there are other restaurants close by for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We found the hotel to be noisy at night very close to loud bars and strip clubs. Convenient for these if that’s why you’re in PDC. When walking through the main street of PDC, be prepared to be constantly stopped and accosted for all kinds of services from street vendors. Massages, tourist gifts, tequila, clothing etc….we were literally stopped 20+ times when we walked for 30 minutes on the main street. Overall, we felt that the hotel was a waste of money compared to other hotels that we stayed at in Mexico. Staff need to work on the service and the food was pretty poor, plus the building needs a massive upgrade and maintenance.

Dear:Mark Harper We apologize for the issues you encountered with the maintenance of our facilities. Rest assured, we are addressing the concerns raised about the glass screen, rusty areas, and the overall appearance of the building. Your feedback regarding additional charges for room items is noted, and we will review our policies to ensure they align with our guests' expectations. It's disheartening to hear about your dissatisfaction with the food quality, and we're sorry for any inconvenience caused by the room service experience. We will work closely with our culinary team to address these concerns and improve the overall dining experience. We understand the importance of a peaceful environment for our guests, and we regret that noise from nearby establishments affected your stay. We will explore ways to minimize disturbances and enhance the overall tranquility of our property. We Checked in on the 27th Dec. This hotel is small and boutique like. The location is fantastic situated away from the main strip yet less than a minute walk away. Hotel room is nice and spacious with a very good mattress for a good night’s sleep. We enjoyed the beach access and loungers available at our beach club but have trouble finding service for beverages and beach towels probably due to a shortage of staff. Many families are here and have managed to reserve the casitas at $100/day. We did not eat at the restaurant nor use the pool so can’t really comment. Beach is clean but there are larger bolders as you go into the water, it’s sandy past that. Beach club 2 doors south has cleared them so it’s Sandy right from the get go. Very little wave most times. The bar is open till 10, usually no customers at night which is nice if you want to just have a night cap. Concierge made a reservation for us for dinner but restaurant didn’t have it for some reason. Price wise is on the on the high side but doesn’t correlate with the service but the room does. Doors are well glazed so can’t hear music from the strip . There’s construction next door which is fairly constant throughout the day. There’s always something happening or going on with the hotel (The Carmen) next to this property. Rooms and grounds are well-kept and cleaned throughout.

The most disappointing place we have stayed in a long time. Total waste of money. It is so run down. The lobby looks like a youth hostel and the restaurant even worse. The worst part is that they DON'T honor the reservation they charge for. We spent $500 for one night in an ocean front room. We got to the hotel after a full day of travel from the US. We were not given an oceanfront room. We were given a room overlooking the ugly, green swimming pool even though the hotel was at less than half capacity and they had PLENTY of rooms available. We were there for less than 12 hours...just one night.... and instead of waking up to the sound of the waves we were woken up to the sound of screaming toddlers in the pool. And...there was NO hot water in the room. The guy at the desk said he would send someone up within 10 minutes to check on the water....it took over an hour... 11 pm....by which time we were in bed. Realy upsetting start to our vacation. Very disappointing HYATT experience.

When we were guests 6 years ago the hotel had a cool Thompson vibe , now owned by the Hyatt we feel this has been sadly lost. Both the main House and Beach Hotel are still great but are feeling a bit tired . We stayed in the Beach House which feels a bit like a poor relative to the main hotel , the outside space around the pool area is very shabby and in need of some attention ( and money ) in particular the cushions and towels are frankly - tatty ! There is so much opportunity to make this hotel a cool place to stay and for non guests to enjoy the space on the beach , we totally appreciate it was lo season but there was no real passion or effort to encourage us to stay by the pool /beach where would have gladly enjoyed food and a few cocktails ( it has to be said the music playlist definitely needs a revisit - trance at breakfast time isn’t my idea of relaxation) After 2 visits to the beach house restaurant for breakfast we decided the main hotel was a much better option , Lazaro was particularly attentive and made us feel welcome and valued. ( hopefully he will get the feedback ) Other staff members were friendly enough but again there was just the extra special service lacking that the Thompson used to offer. We used the gym frequently which was a bonus and the rooms were very comfortable, in particular the bed which lovely. As previously mentioned it was lo season so we didn’t suffer lots of noise from the hotel next door this added to a peaceful nights sleep. All in all we enjoyed our stay but hope that the Hyatt don’t take away everything! we loved about the Thompson

Dear: Andrewolivermorley Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback about your recent stay. We appreciate your loyalty as returning guests and value your honest assessment of the changes since our transition to Hyatt ownership. We're delighted to hear that you found both the Main House and Beach Hotel to be great, despite feeling a bit tired. Your observations about the Beach House are duly noted, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the condition of the pool area. Rest assured, we are actively addressing these concerns and allocating resources to improve the overall guest experience. Your comments about the lack of passion and effort during the low season are valuable to us, and we will work on enhancing our services and atmosphere during such periods. We appreciate your understanding and patience. We're pleased to learn that Lazaro made a positive impact on your experience at the main hotel. Your compliments and feedback have been shared with him. We are committed to providing exceptional service, and your input helps us strive for excellence. We're glad you enjoyed the gym facilities and found the rooms comfortable. Your mention of the peaceful nights due to the low season is noted and appreciated. Please be assured that your feedback regarding the music playlist, the overall atmosphere, and the need for additional attention to certain areas has been taken seriously. We are committed to making the necessary improvements to recapture the unique vibe the Thompson was known for. We value your insights and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back, offering an even more enjoyable and refreshed experience. Warm regards, Vianey Castro

This hotel will charge you one night + taxes even if your airline cancels your flight, making your stay impossible. $382 USD for a night we cannot possibly stay. We tried the hotel and Hyatt customer service, and no one offers any flexibility -- not even a reduction in the extremely high fee.

1. Very noisy rooms: noisy bars ar the corner, open until late hours. The music is clear and audible at the room with closed doors and windows. The hotel is aware, grants hearing protection devices that don’t fully neutralize the noise and make you unconfortable. 2. Narrow beach: I thought this was a good place to enjoy the beach, but there is no sand in front of the hotel: just water. If you want to enjoy the beach you will have to walk away from the hotel. 3. bed without blanket: I asked for the blanket. Nobody returned. I went to the reception. Long wait. Finally, the hotel said there was NO blanket. They gave to me extra sheets. It was a very hot night, we couldn’t turn the AC on. Bad night of sleep. 4. Lax service: next day, a small and very thin blanket was put on bed. The blanket wasn’t large enough for the bed. I demanded to speak with the manager, that just listened. Problems fixed as of, but no apologies, no explanations, no empathy. 5. Management absence: due to these problems I noticed that the management works at the other chain’s hotel. I demanded many times for the manager, but she was never at the hotel. 6. Hotel room: although noisy, good hotel room.
