My boyfriend and I booked this trip for my birthday. We were really looking forward to a quiet hotel where we could unplug and relax, but received the complete opposite. Although the idea of the cabanas on the beach was very authentic, it was not ideal. The room does now have a phone so anything you need, you have to...

The "lobby-restaurant-bar-beach club "area is really nice. Very rustic with a wonderful view. Service was very friendly but everything we ordered took for ever to come and sometimes it came wrong. The food was really a sad experience. The first night we couldn't eat what we ordered. The chef came to see what was wrong and he realized they had...

I had such an awesome time staying at Papaya Playa! I loved the beach, the food & drinks--but the best part was the staff. There are so nice, and fun to be around! They really made all the difference in our stay. The staff member who made the biggest impression on us was the guest agent, Rafael--he was always around...

Tulum and this hotel is the perfect excuse you need to unplugg and relax. You do not even need to turn off your phone since there is no wifi except for common areas and the phone service is pretty faulty around this area. We traveled with some friends and stay at a Jungle Casita and a Beachfront Casita. In essence...

My friends and I are on vacation in the area. We decided to hit up Papaya for a few drinks and a bite to eat by the beach. The service was prompt and the waiters were friendly and welcoming! We made ourselves comfortable on the lounges and enjoyed the beautiful beach. My friend had a fresh salad and green juice...

My wife and I stayed at Papaya Playa Project for our anniversary. The staff were very kind and helpful with any of our needs or requests. The beach front was immaculate with a large number of cabanas with a waitstaff always nearby. The room was really nice, too. The only complaint was that the AC in the room wasn't amazing...

Nice hotel and beautiful private beach but way too expensive for the service that they offer. The customer service is inexistant. We had to change 4 times of bedrooms in 1 week. We had a swimsuit stolen and nobody cared at the hotel. The beach staff was always asking for their tip. Really rude. Do not book the Maya Jungle...

We stayed at Papaya Playa our last weekend in Tulum, because we heard it was the party place. Which it is! Saturday night, there is a huge party that begins at 10/10:30pm, but doesn't really get going until about midnight. A few tips: there is a cover charge for the party ($12 the night we were there), but if you...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA PROJECT , A MEMBER OF DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT a true sustainable project in Tulum. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with the owners of of the existing Papaya Playa beach resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-five cabanas have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabanas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm. ... more   less
