I kept my passport in my luggage (not locked) in my room (locked). i felt totally safe and didn't worry about belongings on the beach/etc. Basically, i left my backpack (small money, cameras, cell phone, journal, etc) on the beach (and/or on the beach chairs) when swimming, when walking, etc and NEVER had a problem.
