My wife and I were looking for the quintessential Old Montreal experience for my wife's 50th birthday and we found it at the Nelliigan. Fantastic location on Montreal's oldest street. Our spacious room, with beautiful exposed brick and fireplace, looked out onto the street below, bustling most days with horse drawn carriages and the like. Our trip was made all...

This is a fine hotel in a good location. However people who rent the hotel space for a wedding, corporate event or private party make the experience unbearable if you are trying to sleep. During our week stay there were parties on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The music can go until 2:00AM and at very loud volumes. Although everything else...

We spend a long weekend in Montreal, and chose hotel Nelligan thanks to fellow Trip advisers. And we're so glad we did! Just as promised, this hotel really is a gem, and set in a very beautiful and convenient location. We were a mere block away from the Notre-Dame Basilica, and marveled at it each time we were leaving or...

This hotel is located right in the middle of Old Montreal, and there are many bars and restaurants on the same street so plenty of places to grab a meal or drink (brunch at Communion down the street is a must....their lobster eggs benny is to die for!). The service was amazing, the staff knowledgeable and courteous, and the rooms...

We had a couple of days to spare and were in Rutland Vt so we decided to spend them in Montreal - We booked a Petite Suite at the Hotel Nelligan and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made - Our room was large, well appointed and the bathroom with the huge hot tub and rain...

My husband and I just returned from a two-night mini-vacation at the Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal, and what a treat it was! Housed in a beautifully set of restored 19th century buildings, this small, charming hotel was a perfect spot to come home to on a cold winter's night with its cozy, beautifully appointed lobby, comfy fireside chairs, well-stocked...

Right in the heart of Old Montreal. You can walk to pretty much anywhere you need to go and beyond if you like walking. Down -Town Montreal is very easy to get around in. There are plenty of nice places to stay in old Montreal but we really like the Nelli. The staff are very personable and friendly, and the...

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
