We had the most fantastic stay at Bilou this summer. We meet so many awesome people who had the same passion for surfing, spear fishing and laugh. Thank you South Africa, Reunion and Great Britain🙏🏻 Chantal and Gideon are so helpful and passionated and know everything you need to know about surfing, wave, Mentawai, fish, sea snakes, spear guns etc. and very patient with lazy, noisy teenagers (I’m talking about our own kids 😂). We just loved Bilou and already dreaming about going back. What is unique about Bilou and definitely something to prioritize when going to Mentawai is that you have you own boat and driver. The boat can take you everywhere, out surfing, snorkeling, spear fishing or to town for burger and beer. And when you are tired of your teenagers, the driver can entertain them when they what to go out fishing or learn how to Surf 🏄🏻‍♂️ We hope to see you again Chantal, Gideon, Josh and Indy. Love from the Danish Family

Bilou beach villas is perfect! The perfect medium of plush and yet simple. Owners Chantal and Gideon along with their young boys, and lets not forget their amazing staff, gives you an authentic stay with pure comfort. I completely fell in love with what they put there heart and soul into. As a bunch of fellas looking to surf our brains out, with a boat driver on demand this was on point! You won't find better!!! speaking to other surfers in the line up confirmed it!

My 4th visit to this resort again was top drawer. Owners and staff always going the extra mile to make your experience a highlight. The villa I stayed in was well serviced and trips out to the various surf spots always delivered. Having Gideon's local knowledge is a major plus. Combined with Chantal's efficient management this is a winning formula!

Sitting behind my desk at work in London, I spend countless hours contriving how I will eventually be able to live in a small timber house on a deserted tropical island surrounded by perfect waves. I don’t spend any time fantasising about the next time I’ll be able to take a quick holiday to a “luxury” resort where, just like the bus to work, the fancy speedboat leaves at 8.30am to whatever wave the skipper has decided that everyone in the resort will surf that session before departing at 12pm to make sure we get back in time for the buffet lunch. Each time I see an e-mail promoting the latest fancy house-on-stilts style resort, which all look the same, I honestly feel a little bit sick. Is that really what surf travel is coming to? What happened to exploring and finding, looking and learning? That is the true difference between Bilou and the so-called “luxury” resorts that are dotted around the Mentawai these days. I’ve just come back from 2 weeks at Bilou and I don’t feel like I’ve been on a holiday – and I mean that in the best way possible. Allow me to explain. I feel like I have spent the past 2 weeks actually living on the island, based in my own little house, with a hammock on the deck from which the wind direction and strength can be monitored. When the conditions align, you prepare a cup of coffee (rather than order one over the telephone) and load the surfboards into your own tin boat, diligently piloted by a dedicated surf guide. Within 10 minutes you are out on the ocean checking the waves, deciding where you want to surf. Of course, the Malherbes are on hand and will gladly share their advice, knowledge and tips with you and gently dissuade you from surfing the wave you can see breaking in the distance – which happens to be unmakeable and to have a scalpel-like reef. Though they do invite you to find out the hard way, if you wish. Maik, our surf guide with an infectious grin and a stylish backhand snap, expertly threads the boat through the keyhole in the reef – from that point onwards it’s up to you. “Where check?” Maik says as he draws the first cigarette of the day into his chest. “Sleeping Wave. Bagus.” With a laugh that anticipates the beatings that he is about to witness, the 40hp Yamaha whines into gear, almost pleading for the lie-in we have denied it. We’re off. It’s 6.30am. “O.K.” Within 10 minutes Maik has anchored the boat just square of the line up. This is the Mentawai and I don’t need to explain how perfect the waves are in these islands. It is as if the primordial force of the cosmos itself – choose your God - has taken the time to dive down to the reef and fashion its contours and channels with laser-like precision, so that the meeting between the long-period swell and this patch of reef is truly an expression of the divine. Let me pause there in case what I said a moment or two ago didn’t strike you like a wide set at 6-foot Icelands. Firstly, you have your own boat and outboard engine, and well as a surf guide. Maik often helped settle those moments of indecision (Icelands or Tellies?) and made well sure that there was a boat to return to when the sleeping wave – the wide set that comes to annihilate those who have been sleeping in the line up - came. As far as I know, this is an entirely unique proposition. How many other resorts happily give their guests free reign over a small outboard engine and boat and invite them to go forth and find somewhere quiet to surf? I suspect the answer is none. Having your own boat and guide means you are totally independent when it comes to where and when you want to surf. Or, if you are too tired from surfing (which you will be at some point) then where and when you want to snorkel or fish. Secondly, a word about checking the surf. When you are zipping around the ocean in your boat, you can spend as long as you want scoping out spots and looking for the quieter lesser-known nooks and crannies that may be pumping on that swell. If you want to surf alone every day, you can and you will. This simply doesn’t happen with the luxury resorts. The skipper of course knows where’s best, and guests have to put up or shut up while they are ferried like commuters to the headline waves in the area day in day out. Checking the surf is part of surfing. Eliminating this vital step sounds like it might make sense. And it does, to a point. But how else do you eliminate the “what if Spot X is pumping?” feeling as you sit out back, making sure you’re lined up for the next set? In our stay at Bilou we regularly surfed two waves – quality steep and occasionally barreling lefts – without another soul out. Once, it was so good that we stayed out for 4 hours, and Maik still had cigarettes to spare when the anchor was raised. Meanwhile the resort boats were moored to their permanent buoys around the corner and guests jostled for priority while the clock ticked – the buffet lunch eventually putting an end to their session. So, that is what Bilou offers. Independence rather than routine. Living rather than holiday. Yes, you have to cook your own dinner every other night – but what is more enjoyable when it gets dark than grilling a fresh GT on hot embers with your friends while your third Bintang dulls the ache in your shoulders? All the supplies you need to cook the meals that your body needs are either in Chantal’s shop at Bilou, or a short boat trip away in the village (and one of the Bilou staff will be more than happy to do the shop for you). The local Indonesian food in the village, Tuapejat, is extremely delicious; far far better than it looks. If you never want to cook dinner, you can order takeaway pizza and burgers from the Mentawai Bakery or your surf guide can pick up more local fare in the boat. Every other night Chantal organises a “beach bar dinner” and we all eat communally at the deck overlooking the channel. Even as daylight bleeds away over the horizon, no one stops subtly checking the wind sock for signals about what is to come tomorrow. Chantal’s dinners have the feel of the neighborhood having been invited to the Malherbes for a gathering. Gideon holds court over analysis of the past days’ surf photos and inspection of the scrapes that are the tell-tale sign of paying one’s dues to the reef. There’s no menu - no ordering your chicken wings with a plea for them to be brought quickly, and no waiting 45 minutes staring at a white tablecloth before your food arrives on a tray. And, speaking of good food, by the time you get back from your morning surf, you will find a heavenly freshly-baked ciabatta still hot from the oven waiting for you. I assure you that you will never be happier to see a loaf of bread in your life. Thank you Chantal, Gideon, Josh, Indie, Jemma, Maik and Weh (and all the others) for being such astoundingly amazing and generous hosts. I’ll be back for my 3rd stay as soon as possible! A final word to anyone who is put off by the 5-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Jakarta. Don’t be. Consider it an act of service to your future self. You won’t even remember it after your first wave. If anything, it makes being free again even sweeter. If you have ever wondered what you would have to do to guarantee a few week’s worth of empty uncrowded waves in the Ments? Now you know. All you have to do is check into a nice hotel in Jakarta for 5 nights and watch Breaking Bad, again. And by the way, second time round it’s even better.

Bilou's seaside setting is absolute bliss for the wandering soul/couple/family/friend group. The villas are perfectly equipped for relaxed island living. The hammock, the bean bag, and the beachside cabana all provide lounging options during the day, while the beach bar is a lively watering hole and feeding hub by night. Fresh food deliveries mean you can pile bountiful amounts of tropical fruit into a museli bowl, enjoy Sumatran coffee, and refuel on the hostess's masterful ciabatta loaves (hand-delivered warm to your kitchen). The staff and owner-family are friendly, highly competent and knowledgable, and willing to go to any length to make your stay more enjoyable. "Cool" IS the vibe around Bilou, no pretences, egos, or drama... instead think fun, camaraderie, and for some guests, even a family-like feel <3 The waves, last but in no way least, are downright epic. There is pretty much always something to surf even when the forecast is "flat." When its on, buckle up. The resort is located close to many options, even during an extended stay we didn't tire of the wave selection. Additionally, Bilou is SPECIAL because each guest/group is given their own boat and driver to take them surfing, snorkeling, fishing, or cruising, wherever they want, whenever they want. BIG BONUS! Can't really say enough good things about this beautiful, humble, and exhilarating place. The next trip is never soon enough.

We loved our trip in 2018 we came back for more in 2019. What an awesome and beautiful location you can’t get enough of. This year we arrived at the end of Aug and had more epic surf across the 8 breaks you have choice from. Iceland’s was cooking!! A number of rather large swell days where board shorts and rash vests were taken by Mother Nature. Surf and fishing was epic and this year we even brought our scuba equipment and dive tanks with us this time as many dives spots. Nothing like a few Bintang’s to enjoy each evening watching the sunset. Hospitality of the Malherbe’s and the resort was awesome and top class as always. Great place to relax and get away from it all for two weeks for surf enthusiasts and families.

If your idea of a perfect island and surf holiday is being as far away as is reasonably possible, and are prepared to travel the extra distance to find this kind of ‘island heaven’, then you need look no further than Bilou’s 4x handcrafted villas in Metawais. What you will find there is what the Malherbe family dreamed and conceived of, is 100% authentic island living, this with some of the very best surf breaks within ear and eye shot. Not only was it an absolute treat for me to experience this “Swiss Family Robinson” experience in real life, which is amazing achievement, but I came away from this holiday feeling like I really had had a proper break, which often isn’t the case with family holidays. The Malherbe’s are fantastic hosts, entertaining too, as as their kinds Josh and Indi. I highly recommend Bilou, real ‘chicken soup for one’ Soul’, will definitely return, soon.

Mentawai Islands are synonymous with surf but they are so much more. Staying at Bilou allows you to immerse yourself within the local culture. The hosts and guides are amazing making your stay unforgettable. Every day we enjoyed excursions out to the breaks or into the local village and surrounds. The facilities are beautiful- you really do feel like you’re on a deserted island...and....beach bar food is exquisite!!! Let Gideon and Chantal know what holiday experience you are after and they’ll arrange a guide to suit. You definitely won’t be disappointed. Each time I leave I vow that I’ll be back to visit this island paradise.

The perfect destination to go with a bunch of mates. Spoiled for choice when it comes to surf spots. Even with the trade winds not cooperating, we still had a few rescue spots close by and they fired!! Great accommodation, really cool staff and the family who owns it have done an exceptional job in creating this absolute gem of a spot in the Ments.

Each day the four of us had a surf guide and boat ** to ourselves !! ** to take us wherever was breaking well (and it was even in the low season!). There are at least 10 different breaks within a 30 min boat ride and Chantal provides a detailed briefing when you check in to orient you and get you familiar with the winds and what breaks work when which is GOLD. Our guide Iren was super service oriented and polite, all we had to do was let him know when we wanted to head and where to and he was there for us. Its pretty top notch surf guiding really :) The villas were great, Chantal and Gideon made us very welcome and were always happy to answer any questions or provide advice on where might be working and in what conditions. On top of that they are accomplished surfers themselves. With the villas you have the option of being social or doing your own thing and they way the structure the dinners you can join other stayers for dinners Mon Wed Fri and cook for yourselves on the other nights. The guys at Bilou are often out fishing too and they share the fish they catch - nothing like fresh tuna on the barby or braii! Bilou has a little 'supplies shop' where if you take the all inclusive package you can go and stock up on items you need for catering - the coffee they have is great too! And they also provide fresh fruit and vegetables during a few times a week too. Just an excellent experience and like I said with a handful of villas you have the option of doing as much or as little as you like, one of our group was a non surfer too and she had a great relaxing time there too. The only 'downside' i could think of for some people would be lack of hot water for showers, but you don't need it in the climate there and I think the crowd Bilou are aiming at are primarily keen surfers who are easy going rather than wanting 'hotel service'. Chantal and Gideon made us feel very welcome and basically the place rocks! If you like pets the guys have a couple of lovely Golden Labradors who are just so friendly and affectionate which again helps everyone to relax and have fun. Transfers - Chantal can also organise a guide to meet you at the airport, get you to and from your overnight hotel stay accommodation and organise transport on the fast ferry too. So you can be taken care of right the way from the airport if you are new to traveling to the Ments. So all in all - its a place adults by themselves or adults with surfing children should seriously consider. Would go back in a snap and hope to soon :)
