We arrived at 1am and at the time the higgledy-piggledy nature of the resort looked a little scary. After we got to the room however, we found the conditions to be quite adequate. The wifi was a little weak, but the bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The staff we met at 1am didn't speak much English (it didn't matter because we had a Thai speaker), but the next morning the staff spoke very good English and were helpful. They even gave us access to a brand new iron (we had experienced some issues at other hotels in Thailand that didn't have an iron). The location is on the water (our window looked out at the water), and there was a 7-11 within a few minutes walk which was convenient as there was no complimentary breakfast.
I spent my last days in Thailand in this hotel, and it was really a good choice. Spacious room with balcony right on the sea (built on tilts like all the old houses in this area). Just near the pier. Beautiful seaside views. Spent a lot of time on this balcony, watching the tide, the birds, the fishing boats. Samchai is a very spacious hotel with a lot of corridors almost like small covered streets with rooms on each side. Outside common areas with tables, chairs seaside view. Though they speak very little English at the reception, the service is okay, because they call the manager, if you have some problems and you can handle them with him on the telephone. He has been living in th USA and speaks very well English. For instance I didn't get the room with seaview, that I thought I'd booked, but this was handled after a telephone call. And when I asked for the bus for Bangkok, the receptionist called the manager, who promissed to pick me up and bring me to the bus the next day. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but the city is just a few minutes away, and you can find a lot of cafés and restaurants for breakfast and other meals. The evening market is very close, too, with a lot of open-air restaurants. There's a little shop with water, biscuits, milk etc. at the reception area, thermos with hot water, too, fridge in the room. The town is very pleasant. It's not a tourist town like Pattaya, 40 km south, but a town full of thai life. There is a wonderful big parc near the seaside, just bubbling of life from early morning with people jogging, doing yoga, fitness and other activities before work, students gathering for making their projects together (free wifi in the parc). I really enjoyed my stay.…
It's really a great location for someone looking to have a relaxing day or two away. Many good restaurants in the area, mostly Japanese, and actually a surprising number of karaoke parlours Japanese catering to Japanese (I am informed the area is called Japanese town). there is a park close by with a paved jogging track, a skate park, many coffee shops, and a "wifi city" (i.e., free wifi in in the waterfront park). My room was a good size, with a comfortable king-sized bed and a "waterfront" balcony (it's really an alley on the water, but it's nice and quiet). Wireless connectivity wasn't possible in my room though it is possible in some rooms, as well as the lobby, some hallways, and a lovely lounge area right on the water (make sure to ask about this on arrival, as it's not pointed out during reception). The owner is very kind and helpful, and speaks perfect English (he informed us that he lived in the US for 30 years). During check-out he offered us a ride to the minibus, a great personal touch that will entice me back in the future. The hotel (which, to my great surprise, has 70 rooms) is about a 15 minute walk to the ferry for Ko Sichang, and about an equal distance to minibus stop at Robinson. Ko Sichang is not that exciting but a nice day trip -- especially if you like seafood (though it's rubbish for swimming).…
