Craig Y Nos Castle Hotel captivates many guests with its magical atmosphere, complete with festive decorations and warm log burners, though some report the charm fades with inconsistent room temperatures. While the scenic views from the unique rooms earn praise, issues with hot water and varying temperatures have been mentioned. Despite mixed reviews about the value and service—ranging from slow service during events to professional attentiveness—the hotel's suitability for weddings and overall cleanliness is often highlighted. However, some guests warn that certain amenities may not meet expectations.

It is an old building and constrained by its age and layout. The heating and hot water issues reflect this. We had no hot water in our bath. Nothing came out of the hot tap. There was a portable electric heater in our room so that was OK. The public rooms were generally cold and the portable fan heaters were not sufficient to make a difference. Be prepared and bring extra woolly jumpers. We were attending 2-3 days that involved talks in the theatre. There was no supplemental hearing assistance for people who are hearing impaired. Valiant attempts were made by the organisers to get a working sound system and this improved the audibility of the speakers for most of the audience. But there should have been a T loop system for people who are hearing impaired or suffer from tinnitus. The age and listed status of the building does not prevent the installation of such a system to comply with the Equality Act 2010. The RNID can provide specialist advice I suggest the hotel seeks specialist advice on this matter.

Thank you for your review. The Theatre can be a bit cold, on account of its age and vast ceiling – we do of course adapt the Castles heating seasonally however on occasions (indeed last week – it was cold for just one day) we can be caught out – the Theatre can only really be heated with fan heaters – and will ensure that for future events we try to ensure that there is a bit more heating. Within public rooms we do have fires – but, given the overall heating that week, it was only noted on one day that it was cold so we planned for the following day to light the fires (having had our room heating put on) only to find it was too warm the following day – indeed today the temperature appears warmer. I have though arranged for the fires/heating to know return to a more consistent state – given we are about to move into Autumn. Sadly with regards to the audio quality in the Theatre I can concur with your comments and apologise if you were unable to hear fully. The Theatre as noted is a very old building and of listed status - therefore obtaining the relevant planning can be long winded and time consuming although we do were we can adhere to the relevant Equality and Disability Acts. I am currently checking with the RNID (after reviewing their website) what can be done to ensure that those that cannot hear, can. Although it must be pointed out, over the last 23 years this has not been brought to my attention by any guests or suppliers or noted as a requirement on our Visit Wales or Wedding Licence(s) therefore I apologise for this. Not least, the Conference and Talks you attended was put on by a 3rd Party of whom, we do not supply equipment to – but, it was brought to my knowledge on Tuesday of last week that when testing the equipment they were providing sufficient audio. I have also been made aware however, that future talks are taking place in the Conservatory. Again, thanks for bringing it to our attention. M!chael

My three friends and I had the most amazing time at Craig Y Nos castle. The staff that greeted us at reception were polite and kind and helped direct us to our room.
We had the evening meal and the buffet breakfast in the morning. The evening meals was so delicious and was made even more special because of the gorgeous dining hall with interesting furniture, memorabilia and paintings. The breakfast the next morning was everything we could have wished for - a proper english breakfast with all the trimmings that was replenished frequently. We left the castle very full and happy.

The room was to die for; the bedding and mattress felt really good quality and we fell asleep immediately. We loved the vintage furniture in our room - this connotes that each room has slightly different furniture that is special and interesting. I could have stayed in the shower all day, it was amazing.

We did the history tour the next morning, our giude was very knowledgable and you could tell he was passionate about his subject. I wish we could have seen more of the hospital wards on the top floor but we also learnt a great deal about Andelina Patti which made up for it.

Overall we loved out stay and would definitely return again to explore the grounds.

Thank you for your comments, it is much appreciated and I am sure that the staff will love reading your positive comments. Its great that you found the staff polite and helpful. The Kitchen Team will be delighted to read your glowing comments about the food both in the evening and at breakfast. I am happy to read that you enjoyed the room and its ethos to the history of Adelina Patti and that you enjoyed your history tour (we are updating part of the upstairs however, soon guests will be able to enjoy the upstairs aspect of the Castle and its hospital era history. Great welcome from friendly and efficient staff who showed me to my room efficiently, provided me with an iron and helped me print out my speech notes. My room was large, clean and well-stocked with soaps, lotions, beverages and biscuits. The wedding venue was stunning - the artwork, architecture and history provided both grandeur and intimacy for a really unique ceremony. The wedding breakfast was held in the conservatory, where the beautiful views of the river Tawe were complemented by the stylish and sophisticated table settings. The food itself was well-presented, of good quality and service was just about quick enough to ensure everyone had hot food. The wedding team dealt with last minute alterations to the schedule effortlessly and provided excellent hospitality until the wee small hours. We had the whole hotel booked out for our wedding party so we were able to sit outside late without disturbing other guests.

What a great review. It is fantastic to read such good comments. Clearly it shows that the main asset of the Castle is its staff and the food. I am glad that you found your non-ensuite to be of good quality and stocked well. I am happy to read your positive comments about the building itself too. The kitchen, certainly, do know how to offer good quality food and our Front of House team are great with the service levels. Overall, your positive comments are brilliant - thanks M!chael

My best friend's wedding just after Christmas; I made the wedding cake. No one at reception to ask for an umbrella to protect the cake from the pouring rain and the front door is a way away from the car park. Took ages for them to tell me where the cake should go. The wedding was lovely, but that had nothing to do with the castle staff, who were absent all afternoon and night so no one there to help coordinate the movements of guests from ceremony to reception to evening meal. No ice in the bar, lots of drinks not stocked. The speeches were delayed by half an hour because they hadn't organised the microphones and at one point several of us guests were running round the hotel trying to find a member of staff to help out. I ended up bursting into the kitchen and trying to get the lovely lad who was kitchen assistant to find someone for us. Our room was clean but shabby, with a very squidgy bed and no hot water from the moment we arrived to when we checked out. We had organised an early check-in to be able to shower before getting ready, but with no hot water, this didn't happen. They refunded £30 to us after we complained, but we heard later that many guests the previous night had no hot water either. Knowing this they should have warned us that there was no hot water on checking in and offered the discounted rate upfront, rather than making us pay full rate upfront and not mentioning it.
In all, a pretty shambolic experience and very stressful for the bride and groom.

Thank you for your comments, which is unusual to read that weddings go wrong. I am sorry you turned up to the Castle without your own umbrella. We have 2 car parks one directly infront of the Castle and one to the rear and in 23 years of working at the venue, I have not once had a comment that the car park is too far from the door or a supplier needs us to protect there belongings. Depending on whether the cake was brought in the day before or the wedding, it is usual for suppliers to agree with their clients as to where the items are to be placed – as some clients prefer the cake to be on dsiplay during the wedding breakfast, brought out after or even kept until the evening – however, I will be able to check with our wedding team what was discussed on the order of the day. I have asked our Front of House Team to look into the lack of ice (as we do have an ice making machine) and I will find out as to what drinks were not stocked (clearly we ONLY stock drinks we supply – so should have had a stocked bar of the stuff we sell). I have briefly looked into the concerns in regards to the microphones and do apologise – we supply these at no cost and it appears someone had pulled the connectors out (I have advised staff that we should ensure that the items we supply are working and checked, so can see how this slight delay could have caused an issue). I sincerely apologise in regards to the hot water – I agree from my own experience at other Hotels – lack of heating or hot water can cause an inconvenience and concur with your comments - sadly, it had stopped working as the boiler had become faulty – however, the following morning it had managed to be repaired – then in the evening it appeared it was only working on one cylinder – so some guests unfortunately didn't manage to have a hot shower – and anyone who brought this to our attention, was refunded. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy the wedding and will be responding to the relevant bride and groom in due course – sadly, on occasions things do go wrong – however, feedback from the wedding couple to our Functions and Events Manager, did seem that bar a few concerns the day went well. I am sure if you were ever at another wedding you would see how things run generally and that this was an unfortunate and rather embarrsing situation – for which I genuinely apologise. M!chael

Myself (craig) and peter had our wedding here, and we had the most magical day. Our wedding was on 30th November 2023.
We stayed the night before and did the ghost tour which was loads of fun. We also had an evening meal at £25 per head for a 2 course meal which is really great value for money. The food was absolutely stunning. The best fish pie I have ever eaten.

The wedding day itself was perfect. Everything went without a hitch. Michaela and the rest of the staff were fantastic. They really went above and beyond for us.

There was a slight delay between meals, but that was through no fault of the castle. It was because we were suppose to have speeches before the wedding breakfast, but due to 1 or 2 people not buying a drink for toasts we were forced to have speeches after the meal, which messed up the schedule. I must repeat, any food delays were no fault of the castle, and we have made this clear to the wedding guests.

It really was a perfect day. We do want to apologise for a guest being hard work and reducing a staff member to tears. We were very angry when we found this out.

There were a few people moaning about being cold, however, we were getting married in November 🤣 we told everyone months in advance to make sure they wrapped up warm. So anyone moaning about the cold only have themselves to blame. Its a castle in November 🤣

Joking aside, we really want to thank Michaela and the rest of the team, from the chef to the lady behind the bar, thank you so much guys. You gave us the wedding of our dreams 🥰

It is great to hear your positive comments about Michaela, who I am sure will be over the moon. It is good to hear your understanding about the heating too. I will pass your comments about the bar to our FOH team. It is great that you found the food to be stunning and provide great value for money – not least your recommendation of the fish pie! I am sure that the staff member will appreciate the apologies – it goes far, so thankyou. Regards M!chael

Such a beautiful venue!! We came here for a wedding many years ago although both the meal and evening party were in the back function room, this time around the wedding was in the conservatory which is a beautiful room with a breathtaking backdrop looking over the very scenic wooded valley below, and rocky mountains above. I was a last minute add on to the day and the only vegan which did not phase the caterers one bit. Even with the short notice they were able to offer me several options, I opted for the soup starter, mushroom wellington main and brownie for dessert. All three dishes were delicious and were genuinely the envy of other guests who wanted to know how I’d managed to wangle the alternative dishes! Staff were very pleasant and accommodating 👍🏻

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated. I am sure that our chef will appreciate your postive review in regards to the food. It is great to read your kind words about our staff - they will be happy. The Conservatory is a great location for the wedding breakfast allowing movement to our function room for the evening buffet and disco. The views from the Castle are stunning and its pleasing to read your take on the scenery, The Castle does its best to cater for a varying degree of food choices and its great that your late admission was catered to. Not a wedding stay. Just wanted clean reliable place to stay in the area for three nights.

Poor maintenance being performed on rooms.

We're told that as from 7pm the lobby/reception area would be locked with no staff in attendance and that we must use the side entrance.

This side entrance once inside was littered with several days empty drinks/rubbish and it remained there for our entire stay.

Our "family room" After fixing our first meal of the three nights and while washing up in the kitchen we heard the sound of water. Opened the cupboard below the sink and saw a bucket. The water from the sink was draining into the bucket. The hotel clearly knew the sink was faulty in advance. Said nothing to us. We had to throw the soapy washing up liquid out the window. Sorry for any food waste smells for weddings that week.

Went to take a shower afterwards in our other room. The drain in that room's shower wasn't working! Had to shut the shower off a couple times to let the soapy water drain so as not to flood our room and the family room below.

The next night we were having our dinner and the fire alarm went off.

As I am handicapped getting down the flights of stairs in an emergency is stressful and dangerous.

The alarm stopped after a few minutes. No staff to be seen anywhere. So we went back upstairs to our family room and resumed eating.

Alarm sounds again!!

Back down the stairwell and outside. This time my missus went looking for the staff as none were at the fire meeting point and none were giving instructions or updates.

She found the staff and they said that they did not have the code to disarm the siren??

So disappointed we checked out of our room a day early.

Raised the concerns at the checkout desk
And we're told that we needed to write to maintenance.

Over £800 for this?

Avoid is my recommendation.

Thank you for taking your time to post a review, naturally it is disappointing to read when we get things wrong, however we do wish to portray a balanced set of comments. From my understanding you had booked 2 rooms for 6 people over a period of 4 days – hence the cost (which was slightly confusing) as your comments might indicate 1 room – when you actually had the Theatre Loft and the Theatre First Floor Flat (which is a 2 bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen diner – which is not in all the rooms). You were also booked in over a period of days where a wedding was booked in, meaning that our Restaurant and Bar facilities were booked out to Wedding Guests – however, breakfast was available on most days – I think, bar one. The only thing I can comment about the poor maintenance on the rooms relate to the comments you made at Reception, in regards to a shower that wouldn’t drain quickly along with the issues with the sink – which, naturally I can agree are not something that should be the case, but we use feedback to ensure if something is brought to our attention we can then arrange to fix – not least, given you were staying here for 3 days had it been mentioned sooner rather than later, we could have fixed. Indeed, it appears that the sink/plug unit was faulty so a previous occupant but the bin there – and did not advise anyone. As soon as you mentioned it to me at Reception, I arranged for our maintenance team to do a temporary fix and we ordered a new plug unit which arrived the following day and it was replaced. Yes, I agree that placing someone who was disabled in the top floor of the Castle is not ideal – however, we book guests according to any requests and had it been mentioned that there were issues with stairs we would have been more than happy to place you in a disabled facility room or in a ground floor room subject of course to availability. Sadly, it appears that the fire alarm went off, for approx. 40 minutes and the staff made guests aware that there was an error in the system, we believe caused by a faulty sounder that would not shut off. Guests in the Castle were made aware that this was not a real alarm and sadly, irrespective of having the code to turn the alarm off, it would not go off. Subsequently, we called another staff member who muted the alarm, and then the engineer advised us how to reset this. I can of course only apologise for this however, assure you that the staff did everything they could and in good time to have the alarm turned off with limited issues caused to our guests. Whilst I note you checked out early, when you checked out on the day there was no mention you were not returning and to this extent I am more than happy to refund 1 nights stay for the 1 room that remained booked and will arrange for our reception to action this. I hope also, that you managed to collect your delivery that came to the Castle which we stored safely for you. We email all our customers feedback forms (or at least to the main booker) and reply to each of them to ensure that were we can we resolve issues quickly and directly, and whilst I appreciate at times things can go wrong bringing these up during your stay often will have them resolved immediately. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors M!chael

Wow what an amazing place. I went there to attend my friends wedding. When you arrive the beauty of the building (nestled in the mountains) is breathtaking. Once inside I was greeted my the lovely receptionist who was full of information, very friendly and helpful. The interior of the castle is steeped in history of its previous owner Madam Patti. The architecture is beautiful as is the furnishings.
My room was extremely spacious, spotlessly clean, with a modern bathroom. The shower was powerful and easy to adjust the temperature.
Little did I know that my room is one that has had the most reported activity (by spirits) and my first night my sleep monitor picked up some sounds, like the wardrobe door opening and closing, tapping and a groan (I slept through all of this as the bed was extremely comfortable and I had the best couple of nights sleep I have had in a long time). The hallways were a bit cold (as expected in a castle in November) but the bedrooms and lounges were kept nice and warm. Sitting by the fire in one of the lounges with a drink is extremely cosy and a great place to chat amount friends.
The evening before the wedding we did a ghost tour which was amazing. We had quite a lot of activity and our guide was very informative about the ghosts that roam the castle.
The first evening we had a two course meal, which is one of the best meals I have ever eaten. The ribeye steak was cooked to perfection, it literally melted in my mouth. I really recommend ordering that.
The wedding itself was glorious from start to finish. It is the best wedding I have ever attended. It was a true celebration on love. The ceremony was beautiful. The food (although delayed, through the fault of some guests) was delicious. The reception was filled with fun, laughter and lots of drunken dancing.
The staff were attentive, helpful and really couldn’t have done anymore for anyone. A big shout out to the lady behind the bar, who was rushed off her feet but still made time to laugh and joke with us all.
Anyone planning a wedding, I would 100% recommend this stunning castle. You will honestly have the most amazing day. Thank you to all the staff at Craig Y Nos for making it a truly magical time xx

Recently got married at Craig-Y-Nos Castle and had the most amazing experience. We felt very looked after during the planning leading up to the wedding, and the day itself went so smoothly and wonderfully. We went for the friday wedding package and had the run of the castle and catering for all our guests, which was a great load off our minds to have it all in the same place! (Plus details like table dec/seat covers etc. made life so much easier!)
We had sunny weather on the day which was lucky, but the inside of the castle is so beautiful with so much personality that it would have worked out great in any weather. The grounds around the castle are great for a walk and for wedding photos.

The staff were always on hand for any questions, were super friendly and knowledgeable and really went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect.

The food served at the wedding was delicious and presented beautifully, and there was a good selection the evening before which was also delicious. Allergies and other dietry requirements were well catered for which was very much appreciated.

The bridal suite was gorgeous, my favourite thing about it is the massive clawed bath! We had also been up and stayed in various rooms a couple times before the big day, and always had a well cleaned room and comfortable beds. Our guests also complimented their rooms and had everything they needed.

Thank you so much to Nicola, Chloe and everyone at the castle!!

Had our beautiful day at Craig-y-Nos Castle last week & what a day it was.
We were apprehensive leading up to the day after feeling a lack of communication along the 2 years leading up to it, but thankfully we couldn't have asked for a better day. Staff were amazing on the day & couldn't have done enough for us.
Michaela was absolutely amazing on the day & I only wish we had of met her sooner as she was an absolute dream. She was helpful, kind, interested in us & all our guests, patient & coordinated the day perfectly.
Again we only met Lisa on the eve of the wedding, the wedding day briefly & the morning after, but she was very helpful, polite & again couldn't do more for us.
Kelly has been amazing along the journey, our original wedding coordinator left soon after booking when we found ourselves with an email explaining who our new wedding coordinator was but unfortunately we never met her as I feel she went off to have a baby but I could be wrong. Kelly stepped in & was always helpful, went out of her way to make sure we had everything we wanted & was always on hand during the day to pass us a well needed drink after the ceremony & fluff my dress trail, these little things didn't go unnoticed!
Sophie was amazing behind the bar & helping on the eve to set things up, and always so chatty & friendly. The team really does make the wedding a dream & the castle helps with its beautiful regal yet gothic backdrop, there's something about this castle at Christmas that just comes alive & allowed our photographs to look regal & fairytale like. Every guest has said they loved the venue & the day & I believe they truly mean this. There was some issues with heating in rooms but we have been told that the maintenance team was quick to sort this for each guest having issues.
The food was in abundance & was stunning, nobody was left hungry or dissatisfied.
Thank you CYN and staff, can't wait to come back for an anniversary stay!

Response from Michael Ludwig, General Manager at Craig Y Nos Castle
Responded 19 Dec 2024
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and positive comments in regards to Michaela, Lisa, Kelly and Sophie - i am sure they will be very pleased to read your heartfelt thanks, as well as all the other staff that helped, either in front or behind the scenes. I am sorry that you felt that you had a lack of contact and i will be ensuring that when staff leave, the team advise clients sooner rather than later, but, i am more than happy to find that in spite of this, everything ran smoothly. Its great that you found the venue magical. Your comments about the food is great and naturally we would welcome you back. Best Wishes M!chael
