This was a wonderful and relaxing place to stay. The room was wonderful as were the kind and friendly staff. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant, especially the local set three-course dinner. We enjoyed snorkelling straight of the beach. Boat transfers from KK were included in the price.

Hotel locates in an offshore island and required an hour to get there travelling by bus and boat. However, it is worth to go there to see the beautiful island and staying with Sutera. Room is spacious, good conidtions, comfy, and most important can enjoy the view of the stunning beach from the window. Staff were attentive and friendly. Especially thanks to the beautiful lady Ms. Roxanne for the hotel tour. I felt calm and relaxed more than ever while staying with Sutera. I regret to stay here for only 1 night and I should have stayed longer.

The chalet we stayed in was very rustic and cosy! There are also plenty to be done here, from scuba diving to ATV riding and going to the spa! We also enjoyed the food and the coffee. It was a memorable experience to be here. Also, if the weather is bad and you can't get out of the island, you'll get a complimentary night stay. I prayed hard for that though no such luck!

Please don’t choose to support this hotel. The island would be beautiful if it hadn’t been completely decimated by human littering (mainly plastic & disused fishing nets) which has resulted in the island being turned into a rubbish dump and no fish or marine life in sight. Outside of the resort the local community villages are a living rubbish dump - sights you couldn’t imagine. Unfortunately, we didn’t read any review detailing this before arriving and therefore our 2 night experience was incredibly upsetting for the following reasons: The hotel forbids you from refilling a water bottle at the one-and-only drinking water dispenser in the resort. It then, not only forces you to purchase drinking water from the hotel, it only sells drinking water in tiny plastic bottles. Due to the fact it is always very hot, that meant we had to purchase a huge amount of single use plastic bottles. This is incredibly un-environmentally friendly and frankly, for a ‘5 Star’ resort to not be offering free drinking water is terrible. We had access to the free drinking water a breakfast only and were actually told off when we tried to access it at a later point in the day. See attached photo for sign informing guests they can’t refill water bottles. The hotel bag up rubbish including cleared foliage, into plastic bags & dump it at the end of the resort. Out of sight out of mind for them, but again this is shocking behaviour and shows a disgusting disregard for any responsibility towards the environment. Photos attached. The hotel has a generator running 24/7 continuously pumping out thick smog into the atmosphere. Again, zero regard for its impact and responsibility on the ‘hidden gem’ it refers to in its marketing material. Photo attached. The term ‘Spa’ should be used loosely. We booked in for 2 Balinese massages for the following day. When we arrived the lady who we had booked with at the reception seemed to have no recollection of our booking. We had to wait around in the massage room for around 20 mins whilst she ran around trying to find ‘masseuses’ which again, clearly had had no real training. It was terrible. Not only that, they chatted and giggled between themselves the whole time which didn’t add to the experience. At the end the lady decided to make fun of her male colleague to us for being, in her words, a gay boy. Again, his sexual preference was none of my business and I certainly didn’t feel comfortable with her mocking him to us. The room was also dirty and not anything a 5 star resort anywhere else in the world would allow. The beach has a lot of sand flies. A member of staff kicked an innocent sleeping puppy for simply being by the dining area. The food menu is limited if you don’t want salty Chinese/Malaysian food all the time. There is hardly anything fresh, nutritious, un-processed or healthy to choose from. I imagine the reason there aren’t many reviews detailing the abhorrent amount of plastic waste on the island is that most guests stay for 1 night & don’t venture far from their room or the restaurant. Plus, most guests are either Malaysian or Chinese - single use plastic & plastic waste is still common place in these countries, unfortunately. Positives: The room was nice. The staff (apart from the puppy kicker) were friendly. The cleaned part of the beach the hotel guests get to use is stunning. Sunrises & sunsets glorious with some views of Mount Kinabalu. In summary - this hotel would not legally function in most other parts of the world due to its insane unsustainable and environmentally harmful behaviour. Please do not support it

Dear Hawkeye, First and foremost, thank you for choosing Sutera at Mantanani as your choice destination and we appreciate very much for taking the time to share your experiences while you were there. It is with much regret to hear that you had some unpleasant experience. during your stay with us recently. I assure you that we are equally concerned with the rubbish issues on the island which you have raised. The rubbish brought upon the island is not from the island itself but instead washed ashore with the strong currents that surrounds the island. We do our best to maintain the beach cleanliness on both of our resort beachfronts and for your kind info, we do not ‘dump’ rubbish at any part of the island but instead we have collection points which at the end of the day cleaning period or over the next several days depending on the load factor, will be collected to be sent to our back of house location for burning in our very own incinerator. All of our resort plastic and tin wastages are packed and shipped out from the island and transferred to our sister property in the city where an appointed collector collects all plastic and tin rubbish for their recycle business. We will take into considerations to provide 'water refilling' options from water dispensers in near future as we currently provide complimentary 4 bottles drinking water per day in all our chalets. As for the Spa services we take your comments seriously, we sincerely apologize for this, and we will look into this immediately to ensure we improve on this. Regards, General Manager Sutera At Mantanani Resort

Dear Sutera Management, I would like to start by saying that the staff at Sutera at Mantanani were very welcoming and friendly and they provided excellent customer service. Thank you very much for this. I would like to provide some feedback and suggestions on two matters: stray animals and plastic. Stray animals (dogs and cats): While staying at the resort, we encountered several dogs and cats. My partner and I have a deep affection for dogs, and it was truly disheartening to witness stray dogs struggling without sustenance or proper care. We also came across two undernourished puppies. I fed the dogs and puppies outside of the restaurant and whilst I know this is not advised, I found it hard to see them go without food. I believe this is a natural instinct for people to feed stray dogs as they care about the wellbeing of the animals. However, I also acknowledge that this behavior contributes to the issue and can pose challenges for both the resort and the restaurant. Suggestion: I suggest that the animals (both dogs and cats) be humanely sterilised so that they cannot breed. This initiative would decrease the population of stray dogs and cats in the resort vicinity and throughout the entire island. Sutera could establish a partnership with a local animal welfare organisation to carry out the sterilisation of the animals on the Island. This could serve as an education and awareness-building project for Sutera, contributing to the community and promoting animal welfare. Several animal welfare organisations operate in Malaysia, offering sterilisation services and/or rabies vaccinations. Some organisations include Trap - Neuter - Release - Manage (TNRM) Malaysia, Stray Free Malaysia or the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I would be more than happy to sponsor the sterilisation and rabies vaccination of the affectionate mother dog who frequents the resort area, known by us as 'Jellybean', as shown in the photograph attached in this review (on the right). In the event that Sutera is not inclined to cover the costs of sterilisation and vaccination, they could consider inviting individuals to sponsor dogs on the island. These are some potential ideas to explore. Plastic and waste: During our walk around Mantanani Island, my partner and I were confronted by the extensive presence of plastic waste and debris washed up along the shoreline. I am aware that the majority of this litter originates from the surrounding waters rather than the island's inhabitants. Witnessing this unsightly pollution on such a breathtaking island was very disheartening. Furthermore, we encountered potentially hazardous and unsafe waste, including fire extinguishers, butane gas canisters, shards of sharp glass, rusted barrels with sharp edges, spray paint cans, paint containers, and petrol bottles. Suggestion: The resort has an opportunity to educate its guests about the impact of plastic pollution, particularly how it accumulates on islands, adversely impacting the environment, wildlife, and local people. It would be beneficial to offer recommendations for guests to make a difference in their own lives, such as reducing their reliance on single-use plastics and advocating for improved waste management practices through government channels. Additionally, this provides an excellent platform to outline the resort's efforts in minimising its environmental footprint and ensuring responsible waste disposal to prevent marine pollution. There is also potential for the hotel to engage in advocacy efforts with their government to address pollution issues more comprehensively. Personally, witnessing the pollution around the island has prompted me to reflect on my own plastic consumption and consider ways to reduce it in my daily routine. There is a substantial collective effort that can be made to protect our beautiful planet, and if we all play a role, we can work together towards its preservation. Thank you for considering this review, I would really appreciate to hear back from you about the above issues and suggestions and I am more than happy to discuss any of this. Terima kasih

Our 3 days 2 nights teambuilding trip to Sutera at Mantanani was truly unforgettable. The stunning sunset views and the distant sight of Mount Kinabalu made it even more special. But what made the experience exceptional was the outstanding service provided by the resort staff. They welcomed us with refreshing wet towels upon our arrival, which was a small but thoughtful gesture that helped us cool down after our long journey from Labuan. And let's not forget about the food – it was amazing! Every meal was a real treat. The rooms at the resort were quite comfortable, although some sand on the floor can be notice but that was understandable given the island setting. Despite this minor detail, we found the accommodations to be cozy and relaxing, offering a comfortable place to unwind after our exhilarating teambuilding activities. Despite the somewhat remote location, the trip was absolutely worth it, and we'll always remember it as a fantastic teambuilding getaway.

"My experience at Sutera Mantanani Beach Resort was absolutely fantastic. The evening by the beach was pure bliss, relaxing. comfortable room ensured a restful night's sleep, completing this unforgettable experience. Me & my friends can’t wait to come here again in the future. Just remember to bring your own drinking water eventho the resort prepared some drinking water. It’s going to cost more if you buy it from the resort. As for us, we bring 2 big bottles per person. Keep urself hydrated 😊

Our Premium Chalet Seaview and the room's big windows provided uninterrupted ocean views. On clear days, you can even see Mount Kinabalu. The room is spacious and comfortable, featuring a living room and dressing area, appearing even more beautiful than the pictures on the official website. The resort boasts two beaches, one with stronger waves not suitable for swimming, and another near the pier with calm water ideal for swimming and activities. There's also beach volleyball and some children's facilities We arrived at the resort around 15:00. Moreover, sunsets in Sabah start around 17:00. So, on the first day, you don't have much time for activities. On the second day, we went snorkelling in morning , checked out at 11:30, and left the island at 13:00. Hence, I recommend staying for two nights if you want to enjoy. **Important Notes⚠️:** - The sea condition between Kota Belud Pier and Mantanani Island can get really rough. In case of bad weather, it might take longer to arrive. My advice to you not scheduling your flight on the same day to avoid missing your flight. **Tips😘:** 👉 Sunscreen is a must. 👉 Don't forget mosquito repellent. 👉 bring your motion sickness medication. **Transportation:** No public transportation available here, but the resort can arrange transportation for you. At 12:15, you can take a bus from The Magellan Sutera to the pier and then transfer by the resort's speedboat. Any luggage you don't need can be stored for free at The Magellan Resort

I had a dream vacation at Mermaid Island Silk Resort and Spa! This resort really gave me an experience that I will never forget. First of all, the location of the resort is really great. It is located on the beautiful beach. The white sand and blue sea make you feel happy. The view from my room window was like being in heaven. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and tidy, with daily maid service, which made me feel right at home. Moreover, the room's terrace overlooks the ocean, so you can wake up to the beautiful sunrise every morning. The resort's dining options are also impressive. Whether it's local or international cuisine, there's plenty to choose from, making every meal a delicious adventure. I especially recommend trying their seafood, it’s so delicious! What amazed me the most was the resort’s spa. I spent a pampering afternoon there. The spa, massages and other spa treatments all left me feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. The staff was very professional and made sure I had a pleasant spa experience. Overall, Mermaid Island Silk Resort & Spa is a perfect getaway where you will create wonderful memories whether it is a romantic honeymoon or a holiday with family and friends. I highly recommend this place and I will definitely visit again!
