Château Lamothe, a family run chateau, situated the heart of the Bordeaux region is only 30 minutes from the international airport. Positioned equidistant between Bordeaux and St Emilion - 25 minutes drive- you are perfectly positioned to explore wine country. Tucked away in a rural environment within a small village, surrounded by its own spring fed moat with its swans and ducks. This private château underwent large renovations and was tastefully restored, modernised and decorated in 2012/2013 to provide a delightful French home with a high level of service and comfort. The bedrooms are luxiously and tastefully decorated all with en-suite bathrooms. Breakfasts are served either in our dinning room or our on stunning South facing terrace.

Detailed Reviews
Clara welcomed us with a big smile! We stayed one night and were the only one in the castle as it was closing the next day to the public for a few weeks. The castle is beautiful, the room was very nice, great bed and beautiful bathroom with a nice old designed bathtub.
Even though there are no lunch or dinner available while you stay at the Prince Noir, Clara was cooking that day and offered us to have lunch in the big and beautiful dinning room. The table was a very romantic set up, with long red candles on the table mixed with the old dinnerware. She is definitely a good cook. We had a delicious pumpkin soup and a risotto with a mushroom called langue de boeuf!
Breakfast is included and it was very nice and good, from delicious croissant and bred, with yogurt, choice of juice and eggs.
The castle is very clean and service is impeccable. Thank you Cara for a memorable stay.

The entire chateau was hired for a group of ten. We had high hopes but these were exceeded. The chateau is just magical, the facilities superb. We couldn’t have been made more welcome….. fresh bread from the local area and eggs from the hens in situ.
The chateau has a remarkable history and we often reflected on its past and our good fortune to have stayed in it. Such good memories were made at Chateau Lamothe du Prince Noir that will never be forgotten. A once in a lifetime experience. It was lovely to meet you, Carla and thank you for making our stay memorable.

This chateau was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip through the France/Italy/Switzerland. Carla was a wonderful host; the property is rural, filled with beauty and relaxation is easy to find. We found comfort at every turn !

Lovely setting, huge rooms, close to St. Emilion . . . But the real gem here is the ownership, Nicole and her mother Carla. My wife got sick and Carla (who speaks fluent French, English, and Spanish) rearranged all of our travel reservations, found a doctor to come out (for only 65 euros) to examine my wife and prescribe medication (which solved the problem), and made new arrangements by telephone for us in France and Spain. Before she began to make the arrangements, she brought out a bottle of wine, three glasses, and a bowl of chips for all of us to enjoy while she resurrected our vacation.
We speak only English. Carla first talked us out of just going home to California, went with us to the French pharmacy to translate about the prescription, called New York to work on airline reservation changes, let us stay two extra days at the chateau even though it was fully booked, advised us to avoid our planned visit to big-city San Sebastian, Spain, in favor of more interesting Pamplona, and negotiated rates for us with the new hotels. It still makes us emotional to recall our encounter with this modern day Good Samaritan – actually the highlight we remember most about the trip.

My husband and I had stayed here once before about 10 years ago and always dreamed of returning one day. It was a magical experience filled with trips to exclusive wineries, artisans cheese boards eaten with home made pate, the smell of freshly baked croissants and local strawberries. Our host back then helped us make reservations at excellent restaurants, got us in to Chateau Lafite and Chateau Margaux, organized things for us to do, etc. We had nothing but fond memories of the place.
Fast forward to now, and it’s my 10th wedding anniversary and my little baby’s first birthday (on the exact same day!) and we decided to celebrate by flying to France to revisit this fairytale gem. We were extremely disappointed by what followed. We were met by our host, someone we haven’t met before. She was on her cell phone and chasing after her three year old grandson (?) who apparently lives at the Chateau albeit temporarily. We were surprised to see a permanent swing set has been put up by the entrance of the castle and this little boy’s monster truck that he rides around in was parked on the grass near the entrance. There were little dogs running around everywhere and no one to help us with our many bags. It felt chaotic and a little bit like we were intruding on someone else’s house.
The host did not mention our special occasions or ask us what brought us to France. She did not help us get a reservation at a good restaurant even though I emailed her weeks in advance to ask for help (and let her know the purpose of our trip). She did not offer to help us book activities and when i asked for help getting a driver to take us to the wineries it seemed like an imposition on her.
Breakfast was just ok. Almost-stale storebought croissants and baguettes. Yogurt made by Nestle, cold cuts from the supermarket. Requests for more coffee are met with a pause sometimes followed by a ‘you’ll have to wait’.
We spent a lot of time, energy and money getting to this place and it’s not easy or cheap traveling with a baby so who knows when we’ll get another chance. The Chateau itself is beautiful and we would have loved it if the hospitality were better. But in the end we wished we had stayed somewhere else which is why I’m writing this review. If you are looking for just a beautiful place at which you can take Instagram-worthy photos this is a nice choice as it is indeed very enchanting. But if you are a tourist who doesn’t know the area, needs help figuring out what to do and where to go, wants to experience warmth from your host, and wants plentiful and homemade food, this may disappoint you

Response from ChateauLamothe, Owner at Chateau Lamothe du Prince Noir - Bordeaux
Responded 26 Jul 2018
Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you weren't completely satisfied with your stay at Chateau Lamothe. We strive to provide a 5 star luxury experience when you stay with us but of course it is a bed and breakfast and therefore is also our family home with myself and family living/visiting there. In terms of the dogs, they are very much part of the family and the chateau and are very friendly, often adored by guests, adults and children alike, and we feel add to the charm of the place. Our breakfasts are made fresh every day, including the bread which is bought from the local boulangerie at the end of the road, our croissants are baked every morning at home and we in fact had additional homemade muffins and cakes during your visit along with the usual home made jams, meats, cheeses, choice of eggs and a range of other options. We are always happy to accommodate if people would like more of anything or additional drinks, it may have just been a very busy breakfast the morning you are referring to. For reservations and trips, we have lots of contacts and local insight for things to do - unfortunately it was an incredibly busy time and many of the places I tried for you were booked or full and I was unable to get you your first choice although tried other options which I know you weren’t keen to take up. We have many returning guests who come for the hospitality and the luxury, yet family run, feel and so feel disappointed that you didn’t enjoy that aspect. Im glad you mentioned how beautiful the chateau was as we work very hard to keep it looking at its best throughout the year. We do of course take on all comments on board and look to ensure every guest has the absolute best time with us. Carla

We greatly enjoyed our 3-night stay here, and in fact wished we had longer to explore the wine country. Carla is a wonderful hostess who will help you out with anything you need. The castle itself is stunning, both inside and out. Our bedroom was large and beautiful, and the bathroom simply incredible! There are high-end touches, from bed and table linens to Gien coffee cups to antique pieces everywhere. Breakfast on the terrace was a great way to start the day, I felt so pampered. Cannot wait for a chance to return.

This family-run, twelfth century Chateau is straight out of a storybook, complete with a moat! Situated between the left and right banks, Chateau Lamothe is an excellent choice for travelers who want a priceless, authentic Bordeaux experience! The Chateau lives up to its 5 star rating on Trip Advisor so the small number of newly renovated rooms are in demand.
Homey antiques preserve the old world charm yet combine seamlessly with modern amenities in the bathroom, high quality linens, towels, coffee maker and free wifi. Chateau living at its best.
And then there's breakfast fit for royalty. Owner Carla, formerly a restauranteur in Sancerre, leaves no detail behind. Home made pastries, fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit with touches of ginger, delicious coffee and assorted cheeses and meats are presented beautifully on tables set with white linen and China. If you want fresh eggs from the Chateau's hens, Carla is happy to prepare them to your liking. Exquisite breakfast by candle light!
Carla is also an incredible resource for her guests. She suggested where to have memorable experiences drinking Bordeaux, will help with dinner reservations and the best way to get where you want to go.
This is our second time at Chateau Lamothe - and we came back for its former owner - now I'll come back to visit Carla.

It's all very grand when you drive up the tree-lined drive and see the castle with its moat looming up. Our room was spectacular, enormous and had a very comfortable bed, and a separate bathroom that was bigger than many a hotel room I've stayed in. All charmingly decorated. lots of antiques and quirky little details in the room and throughout the castle. Very stylish, but without feeling too posh - hits just the right tone. Carla is a fabulous host, made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of tips.
The only thing that stops me from giving this place 5 stars was that breakfast is served at 9, and 9 only. Apparently most guests sleep too well to get up early, but we only had two days and a lot to see and do, so we were keen to get going a little earlier. We hadn't been told so it was a little awkward the first morning when we turned up at 8 o'clock. Never one to kick up a great fuss we let it pass, although we did say that we were early risers. We were not offered an earlier time for the next day and when we said that we wanted to leave early on our last day, again there was no offer at all of an early breakfast. Maybe this is part of the very charming & relaxed style of the accommodation - but this was a real minus for us.

Dear guest, thank you very much for your kind review and feedback. We are family run and do serve breakfast from 9am, I understand that a 9am may be a late start for some guests, however we do try to accommodate slightly earlier if requested. Apologies for any misunderstanding. We hope to welcome you again. Regards Carla

Outstanding old chateau which is beautifully restored. All furnishings appear the highest quality. In our recent 3 week trip through Spain and France, the bed at Chateau Lamothe was by far the most comfortable and luxurious we encountered. Big, very well appointed bedroom and a bathroom to match with lots of antiques throughout. Large, walk in shower and big separate bath tub for relaxing. The grounds are exceptionally well kept, and it is very cool to stay in a "castle" surrounded by a real moat. The location, while quiet and rural, makes trips to St Emilion and Bordeaux easy. Carla is a welcoming host, inviting you to use a community refrigerator as well as plates and utensils to cater your own picnic at any of the available places on the extensive grounds. Breakfasts are extensive with fruit, breads, pastries, cheese, meat and eggs cooked to order. Dinner at the Chateau was a bit overpriced for what was presented, but the room as a B & B reservation was a bargain. You are getting Relais Chateau quality at a lesser price than an RC property.
