We visited this Hotel for a few beers and lunch recently while cycling the cycle trail. Peter is very welcoming and gave us alot of historical information. Beers were cold, food was tasty and the pub has great atmosphere. Highly recommended

Nice place to finish up for a drink after cycling from Kaikohe. Staff were friendly, the setting is beautiful. The owner has fitted out three beautiful rooms with ensuite for accommodation, we didn't stay but looked through the rooms, very nicely done. Someone needs to set up a cafe with counter food, the cyclists are coming now that the trail...

The people here are wonderful. This is a very old hotel, reputed to contain the first bar in New Zealand to serve alcohol (1826 or so). It was built from the local kauri trees and was an early site of trade on the upper reaches of the Hokianga Harbour. Nearly 200 years later it is a charming place in need...

Popped in for a drink on our way through to see Tane Mahuta. Nice friendly service and a nice venue with clean toilets but the coffee unfortunately on the day we visited was terrible! Gorgeous view from the outside tables where we took lots of photos and spoke with some of the friendly locals.

After a fabulous walk at wairere boulders we popped into the Tavern for a well deserved ale. The patrons were easy to talk to. this Pub is a step back in time as well as visiting Horeke it self nothing has changed over 30 odd years. It is a bit of a sleepy place but great to go for a...

Oldest hotel in NZ and owner told us the history and cooked excellent meal. Nicely furnished room with beautiful view of harbor. Bar with at least six beers on tap. Paved road. Very quit and peaceful.

We came here because there was a archaeological dig happening right opposite the pub and also my husband has not been here since he was 8 years old... so thought to combine a few things. After wandering around the excavations at the dig on their well publicized open day we thought we go over to the tavern and have a...

Husband and I stayed here after visiting the boulders in our campervan. We were warmly welcomed by the owner who shared the history of the pub and surrounding district. He brought out books to illustrate different parts of the history. We sat and also chatted to the locals and played pool. Great campervan stop over on the shores of the...

Horeke on the Hokianga is not on the main tourist route but it's worth the detour. Purportedly the pub dates back to the 1820s but whatever the case may be, the area is certainly one of the earliest points of significant European-Maori contact; in fact, New Zealand's first commercial ship-building operation began there in 1826. The pub itself is a...

Horeki Tavern was the most amazing find. It is situated right on the shore of the Hokianga harbour, the bedrooms have stunning views down the harbour, the hotel is full of old photographs and memorabilia and Mine Host is a mind of information on the history of the area. Our room was 9X5 metres and very comfortable, meals were cooked...
