Nestled in a serene setting, Llangoed Hall captivates many guests with its peaceful ambiance and stunning grounds. Visitors often commend the tastefully decorated interiors and comfortable rooms, although opinions on the vibrancy of the atmosphere are mixed. While the service is generally lauded for being friendly, some guests encounter inconsistency. Cleanliness is a strong suit, with rooms well-maintained. However, the value proposition is questioned by some travelers, pointing to high costs not always matching expectations, particularly regarding meals and service.

The hotel looked impressive on the website and we were certainly not disappointed on arrival - splendid house with a beautiful walled garden, orchard and vegetable garden. The lady in charge was extremely polite and welcoming and explained the hotel’s Covid position clearly. The large drawing room and snooker room/library were beautiful yet very relaxing and allowed plenty of room to enjoy whilst maintaining social distancing. The bedroom was very clean, extremely spacious ( it was a double room not a suite ) and beautifully presented in keeping with the style of the house. The bathroom with rolled top bath, large shower, built in tv!, quality bathrobes, fluffy towels and toiletries, was pure luxury. The breakfasts were perfect and catered for all tastes including full welsh, sourdough with mashed avocado and smoked haddock and poached egg. The dinner was exceptional, and rivalled my favourite restaurant at the Connaught. The chef used the vegetables and fruits grown in the hotel’s garden. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, from the young lady serving dinner and the junior gardener to the manager. Highly recommended.

Our long snowy drive culminated before darkness and Jack Frost’s arrival and we were pleased to safely arrive and be warmly welcomed by Jesse who had rung us before we set out on our journey to reassure us of the local Welsh roads. She took us to our room, a spacious one, with double aspect views towards Hay Bluff in one direction and the distant Beacons in the other. A selection of period furniture was complemented by a four poster bed! The bathroom provided a sizeable free standing bath and a large walk in shower. We settled into our room with tea and biscuits using the little jug of fresh milk provided. Our room was warm with efficient heating and the walls and windows silently defied the weather outside. Bedroom floors are solid and silent with noise eliminated in all directions.
The hotel is presently open only Thursday to Sunday explaining the communication issues expressed by some. Dinner is served in grand style in the dining room but the present ‘Lounge Dinner Menu’ will leave the fine diners disappointed yet the ingredients are sourced locally and well presented. The overpriced wine list is in discord with the ‘Lounge Dinner Menu’, and I was puzzled by prospect of paying north of £500 for a bottle of 2nd growth St Estephe to accompany main choices of steak pie/fish cakes or gnocchi. Few bottles on the wine list show a vintage which introduces a new concept of blind tasting! I wondered how many customers chasing a red Burgundy from a noted village and esteemed producer would need to be reminded that the wine is made from the Pinot Noir grape. I recommend buying wine by the bottle or half bottle rather than by the glass as my glass of red from the Gimlett Gravels tasted as if were long separated from its cork. Breakfast is excellent as is the whole country house experience of staying at Llangoed.

It took over four hours of not unpleasant driving from West Yorkshire through the mostly quiet and lovely rural scenery of Wales to reach the imposing drive of Llangoed and celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The journey was well worth it.
We were made to feel welcome by the helpful staff and immediately impressed by the excellent art, furniture and curios spread throughout the hotel. Our room was very comfortable with four poster bed, view of the stunning countryside and gardens and oodles of hot water, gushing in torrents, from the taps in our bathroom. The food was well prepared and tasty though the current menu was probably rather more restricted than the Good Food Guide had described in the pre-covid year. We put this down to the very recent re-opening after Covid Lockdown. an assume that, as with many other hotels, this has reduced kitchen (and other) staffing levels.
For staff safety reasons, we had to transport our own luggage and our room (which was very well presented and clean on arrival) was left totally unattended during our stay but this was no more a problem than it would be in our own home. On our second day enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea on the terrace and explored the large gardens, rare breed chickens and ducks which provide vegetables and eggs for the kitchens. It was easy to find a lovely, secluded sunny spot to sit and admire the flowers. One could easily see the attraction of the place for the former and present owners.
Although, by evidence of a full but well-spaced dining room, it would appear that things are getting back to normal, the large number of comfortable lounges and wide corridors left us feeling almost the 'Lord & Lady' of the manor with hardly another guest in sight. This really is a rare bit of Wales and well worth a visit. It made our special occasion as special as we could have wished for in these difficult times

As you descend on Llangoed Hall via its long winding drive it is stunning. The house is very atmospheric & fabulously decorated in time honoured style. Period piece furniture & carpets that grab your ankles provide an amazing welcome. Perfumed diffusers everywhere also added to the charisma of the place.
We had our 2 spaniels with us as Llangoed had a dog friendly four poster room (no 6) ready for our 2 day stay. Really great for us & despite having the dogs, our room was still decorated in similar stately style to the rest of the house. We booked evening dinner for both nights & selected the 5 course meal. There were alternative 7 & 9 course versions. The food was fine dining & great tasting, decoratively presented food but the portions were so so small we went to bed hungry. At £55 per person we expected more. 2 glasses of house white & a Italian beer projected the bill to a whopping £200 inc the service charge. However, the Head waiter had charged us for the £75 meals & this thankfully was corrected. The 9 course taster meal was priced at £95 per person. We cancelled the meal for the second night as the very focussed menu was unchanged for our second day & we’d be eating the same selection. My daughter is vegetarian & she wouldn’t have been comfortable dining here. We did wonder if it was just us but another couple dining next to us thought it ‘frightfully expensive” so that was reassuring. The Welsh grilled breakfasts were amazing & plentiful. I just needed more of that variety at dinner too.
So why have I only given 3 stars? Well, the meal we felt was very over priced, the fine dining menu far too limited & we both went to bed hungry. That knocked it down to 4 stars. Our room was gorgeous but the nice treat of a small portion of decantered sherry wasn’t repeated on day two & little things like no milk for the tea/coffee tray in the room either day & the lack of a toilet brush for those embarrassing moments in the otherwise amazing bathroom moments were causes of irritation, especially in a room costing £220 per night. It also irritated that the room literature suggested the visitor might think it appropriate to offer a 10/12 % tip at the time of settling the bill. All this knocked my rating to 3 stars. All are correctable & maybe I’m just picky. Anyway, the house is stunning & we enjoyed our stay in a fabulous setting. It was just the small niggly things that stopped us enjoying it as much as we hoped we would. I knew the bill was going to be £600 + before we got there. For a 2 nights celebration I just expected it to be perfect.

Dear Deganawida, We are pleased to hear your welcome at the Hall was a warm one, and your appreciation for the decor will be passed along to the staff. We are surprised to hear your disappointment with your dining experience as we have recently received plenty of positive comments regarding our new menu's and dining experience as a whole. As our menus contain a variety of options our chef will change the menu for guests staying 3 nights or more, and a menu will be created and presented to guests who have specific dietary requirements. We appreciate your feedback and will take on board all comments. we hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the future. Kind Regards The Team at Llangoed Hall

Dear ANJRM, Thank you for your comments. Due to the on going pandemic we currently face we have had to reduce the touch points within our bedrooms for the safety of yourself and our staff. While this may change the mood within the bedroom some what, safety at this current time is crucial. Our apologies that the breakfast was not up to standard, i will certainly address this with out kitchen team as we always aim to learn from our reviews. Hopefully we can welcome you back in the future. Kindest regards, Llangoed Hall

Checking in was swift and efficient.

This place is a little reminiscent of “Days of the Gunboat" and if that is what you want then you have found the right place.

Everything is well maintained and in good order in a shabby chic sort of way. In some respects it is a bit frayed around the edges. That perhaps is the charm of the place

I thought that the staff were extremely efficient and polished. However I also did find the staff to be a tad aloof and unapproachable.

Most of the bedrooms were on the first floor, which is accessed by a rather grand staircase. I personally found it a bit of a struggle carrying my suitcase up the stairs. There did not seem to be any staff on hand to offer to help me. I don’t think there is a lift or at least, I did not see a lift.

Our bedroom was large and well furnished. The King size bed was very comfortable. The bedroom had the usual in room tea and coffee making facilities. There was also a television and a radio.

The en suite bathroom had complementary shampoo, body lotion and the like.

Our evening meal was well cooked and exquisitely presented. Although we were not in a rush, the food and drinks service was so slow that we even thought that we had been forgotten. We had to remind the serving staff that we were waiting.

We were celebrating a family birthday and wanted to stay somewhere special. It was different but it did turn out to be particularly special. It failed to live up to expectations.

Whilst we enjoyed our stay, I thought that Llangoed Hall is over priced for what it offers. I doubt that we would stay there again.

Dear Jennifer259, Thank you for your comments, we are really glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Unfortunately as a listed property we are not to add a lift to our property, it would normally be procedure for us to carry luggage but at this time we are limiting contact, obviously we wouldn't want to jeopardise your health with the current Covid pandemic by touching your personal items. Currently there is an added wait time for dinner service as our kitchen team have additional cleaning between courses to limit contamination but I do apologise that you though we had forgotten about you, this is not how we want our guests to feel. I do hope you reconsider and visit in the future. Kind regards, Llangoed Hall

We booked a meal for my dads 80th birthday for 11 of us. At £55 per head plus drinks, this is not the kind of money we’d normally pay but thought we’d splash out on somewhere special. 4 of us went there last year and had a fabulous lunch with superb service. This time it was very different. No-one was there when we walked in and we had to hunt for someone who said we could wait in the lounge (last time we were offered drinks). After ordering drinks at the table they forgot my son’s drink and again we had to go hunting for someone. We’d asked for no mussel sauce for two people due to allergies but dishes still came with this on. No knife for cheese, again we had to get up and go looking for someone!! At the end of the meal no coffees or anything were offered. And when I asked about this I was told only if they were pre-ordered (last time we were offered coffees and petit fours in the lounge). No acknowledgement of dads birthday, despite stating this when booking. When I raised the issues as we were paying, the member of staff did not seem bothered. The lunches were nice but they weren’t of the standard you’d expect... and the service definitely wasn’t

Our experience at the hotel was, frankly, terrible. In the lead up, they sent me the wrong invoice twice & did not read my email about breakfast booking, asking me a month later the same question. On arrival, the place was deserted, and when a staff member finally appeared it was as though we were an inconvenience? One of our group desired the experience as being 'treated like a leper' as staff were extremely rude and unhelpful at every chance they had. When one of the group asked what local pubs were open, their answer was 'google it.' Utterly disgraceful - we have stayed in places far cheaper who would bend over backwards to help guests. This hotel could not have done less or anyone except bark at people and make the whole place feel extremely unwelcome.

Breakfast took 40 minutes to arrive despite being told we HAD to be there at 8am. Eve then it was cold.

Avoid this place at all costs - they did not even bother to respond to an email asking for receipt of payment :) When I raised my concerns on the day, their response was 'sorry you feel that way.' Glad to see our experience was the same as other people's on here.

We have visited Llangoed Hall many times and always felt that we were spoilt and rested - a perfect break. Unfortunately, it was very different this visit.
As always food was exceptional, drink was not as expected. When questioned about a soft drink not being available the reason given was the manager was away so supplies were short!! This was evident as the overall service was not up to par either, staff were obviously run off their feet, check in was slightly rushed (we were not informed about the new billing system and only found out by being told by another visitor). This is not acceptable for a 5* hotel, if you cannot run a hotel without a manager you should not be opened or at least let customers have the choice and supplement it in the price. I hope this changes because we do miss the Llangoed of old which was the perfect getaway for us.

I would like to add all their Covid-19 safety precautions were excellent as was the social distancing of visitors and masks were worn by staff and guests.

Our arrival in the empty hall reminded me of my first day at Boarding school when the Mother Superior welcomed us with her rules of behaviour. The lunch food, in particular the vegetables, was very good and we considered value for money in this historic Welsh country house. Though I did consider the cut of beef top rump to be below expectation and we had to request a steak knife. The award winning wines list is definitely impressive but exceeding 70% GP that's 400% must deter some guests and may be one reason why Sunday lunch was so quiet. After lunch we enjoyed a ramble in the music room and the games room where pieces of history are displayed. Had we chosen a sunny afternoon it would have been nice to walk in the grounds and look across the river towards Boughrood church.

No there isn't. The staircase has wide treads and the rise isn't very high compared to a modern staircase but was very poorly lit during the evenings at the time of our visit last autumn. I believe all the bedrooms are on the first floor or higher
