We arrived at this splendid hotel in scorching weather today August 7th, never having been here before.
It is totally wonderful. More people were arriving to eat in the garden than there were tables. No problem to these wonderful people chairs were brought freshly sanitized for families to have their drinks under the shade of trees.
The crab salad was superlative, fresh and delicious with the lightest of creme fraiche dressing.
Water was brought out to the table the moment we arrived, service was efficient and kind even the dogs were offered a bowl of water. Cannot praise the staff, the service and the divine lunch. Thank you

We have visited the Griffin a number of times and so thought it would be a nice way to end our holiday.

Our table was available as requested and a jug of water was supplied without us needing to request. The complimentary bread was also tasty.

The beetroot and goats cheese start was delicate a full of well balanced flavours and the lamb and coriander burger was succulent and flavoursome

I opted for for the cheesecake whilst my wife had the lemon post and both were delicious

Service was friendly and efficient but never rushed and quality of food was excellent and value for money.

We look forward to returning again soon

This is a gem of a small hotel or even perhaps more of a restaurant with a good number of rooms . The beds are large comfortable and have good pillows , the bathroom with a strong shower over a deep bathtub and plenty of room . It’s the food that really sets this apart . A big enough choice of starters and mains to go for the full package with dinner and a well priced , interesting but easy to navigate short wine list . Starters such as shepherds pie with a potato foam over a rich meaty sauce or a pea purée with summer veg demonstrate the breadth of hearty and refined choices . The mains had a couple of fish choices including a beautifully cooked fillet of sea bream with perfectly crispy skin . Alongside this are meaty beef bavette with crispy duck egg or a thick pork ribeye with a tasty loaded potato skin and rich sauce . Vegetarians have plenty of choice including a plum tomato and black olive tart . The desserts are just as well cooked , the vanilla cheesecake was rich and creamy with a lovely sorbet , banana fritters crunchy and delicious , peanut butter ice cream Arctic role a better twist on the retro version
The location is perfect for big and small walks in either the Black Mountains or Breton Beacons with short drives and plenty of choice fueled by local walking guides to browse in the restaurant.
Staff want to help , whether in a choice of walk , meal , wine or just to get the breakfast toast nice and crispy

We had wanted to try this restaurant for a while and then an offer appeared in the mailbox so we booked for a lunch in January 2020.
Details of offer had to be read and understood as not clear at all.
We arrived on time and were welcomed but not as warm as the wood fire!
We had to ask for clarification on the menu and I immediately felt we were being ‘labelled’ as old and confused. The menu was far from clear as to what you could and could not order as far as the all inclusive was concerned and deserts very uninteresting. No vegetarian options appeared at all and I overheard another diner enquiring. She was verbally given the options.
The food was very well cooked and presented and we enjoyed first and second courses. Desert was a challenge. On our initial query re menu we were told that there was another desert menu but this failed to appear. The cheese board was really too large and one would have adequately served two!
Our ‘lunch for a fiver’ resulted in a bill for sixty something pounds. Of course this was correct with drinks before and wine.
In conclusion, food was good but ambience, warmth and attentiveness of staff sadly lacking. Will seriously have to consider a return visit.

We have always enjoyed visiting this lovely restaurant. The food has always been extremely good and it has a lovely atmosphere. However due to the coronavirus we contacted the restaurant before we visited to find out what restrictions were in place and were assured that every possible safety aspect was in place. We decided to stop for drinks in the garden. Seating area was very well set out and tables well over 2 metre apart. However staff not wearing PPE taking orders and were not conforming to the 2 metre social distancing. We decided not to stay.

The Felin Fach Griffin doesn't hold itself out as a fine-dining experience in the style of a Michelin star restaurant but it delivers with relaxed but efficient service, a very high quality set of dishes at a keen price.

Presentation is understated but with commendable attention to detail which ensured that relatively simple dishes had lots of interest and pleasant surprises such as the mushroom puree that accompanied my chicken and the wonderful seared flavours that elevated my mackerel. My vegetarian partner loved the Celeriac Steak and the Lemon Posset was a great note to end our meal on.

I would, however, call out the wine list as long on gimmicky narrative but short on the kind of information that enables one to make an informed choice. The cider brandy we had as a digestif would have shamed the best calvados producer in Normandy though it came from Somerset, not Wales!

This restaurant comfortably fills a gap in the market that exists between gastro and gourment and should be commended on striking the right balance.

We spent two nights Dinner Bed and Breakfast , as a 60th Birthday celebration with 4 friends and had a really lovely stay .The whole staff team were incredibly welcoming and very efficient at checking us in and attending to all our needs during our time there. The open fires and cosy decor make the bar and eating areas very comfortable . Staff were very attentive , without being intrusive which made it such a relaxing stay ! For most of our stay we were looked after by Maxine who was absolutely fantastic , checking if we needed drinks in the bar area , and looking after us at dinner .I don’t think we have ever experienced such pleasant and professional service .
We all agreed that the food served was delicious , with plenty of choice available , a special mention for the sea bass and venison which were particularly tasty ! The breakfast was equally well done. Between us we had all the options available over the two days , and no one was disappointed ! The lovely lady who served us both mornings checked regularly that we had everything we needed , bring plenty of fresh tea and coffee whilst we enjoyed chatting about our plans for the day .

There is so much to recommend at the Felin Fach Griffin ,and we hope to return very soon .

I have been visiting Brecon and other parts of mid-Wales for many years and, after reading many reviews in the national press, had long wanted to have a meal at the The Felin Fach Griffin. I finally achieved this goal earlier this month.

The highlight of the meal was the John Dory, beautifully cooked and presented, but the starter and the dessert were very average. Presenting a small serving of fruit crumble 'creatively' in a glass cannot disguise its shortcomings: my daughter's apple crumble knocks for six the one I received at the Griffin.

I accept that, in this Covid era, restaurants are facing difficult times, but on the occasion I visited, the Griffin's offering was no better than a recent meal at a branch of Bill's. Bill's had the advantage of being cheaper, too.

I would not hurry back to the Griffin - unlike the Yamaichi Bekkan on Miyajima in Japan.

Read so many good reviews that despite the price point we thought it would be a nice treat for my mother to go for a sunday lunch (£27 for 2 courses or £34 for 3 suggests something pretty special).

Firstly, the menu on the website isn't up to date. There's only one roast on offer (beef). And one veggie meal, which is more like a starter (deep fried mushrooms, which would be ok in moderation, but not when it's pretty much the whole of a main dish).

In fairness, they adjusted the menu to swap beef for pork on the roast. The starter and desserts were nice. And all the staff were pleasant. But the mains were really average. I'd say £17/£24 would be about right if you wanted value for money. No idea why they've priced at the top end.

The worst bit was driving home and discussing the final bill with my wife, who paid quickly before my mother could see/attempt to pay. We worked out they'd charged us for an extra dish! I ordered a starter and main, while my partner and mum went for main and dessert. My mother decided against dessert after her main, so I said I'd have it. Instead of just charging us for 2 dishes each, they charged me for 3 dishes and still charged my mother's at 2.

Normally, I just let average meals slide but I do think with them charging so much, adding a 12.5% service charge, and then charging us for a dish we didn't have that it warranted a review/warning for other diners.

Booked here for Sunday lunch after a big walk locally at Pen Y Fan.
Excellent choice of food - we had the belly pork and lamb - it was delicious and we cleaned our plates. Good choice of wines and ales.
Staff were welcoming and friendly.
Highly recommend! Would visit again!

Got ground floor rooms
Answer from lizziej1

They definitely don't have any ground floor rooms at the moment - we were thinking of taking my Mother for a short break so I enquired whilst we were there. They will be developing the older buildings at the back and creating some ground floor accommodation then but nothing yet I'm afraid. (Stairs to the rooms are fairly easy if the individual can climb a normal staircase) No steps on the ground floor between bar, restaurant and outside.
