Set in the heart of Britain’s Ocean City, the Duke of Cornwall is a stunning period hotel brimming with character and style. Built as Plymouth’s first luxury hotel in 1863, the Duke has been lovingly preserved and enhanced so that its unique Victorian Gothic splendour can still be enjoyed by guests today. The hotel’s 72 rooms are all individually designed with thoughtfully-selected designer wallpapers and vintage furniture, creating a chic look that does justice to the building’s striking architecture. With a range of bedroom sizes and styles available, from comfortable en-suites to indulgently romantic four-poster rooms, there’s accommodation to suit everyone. The Duke’s luxury extends to its impressive culinary offerings. Fine dining is available (for guests and non-guests alike) in the comfort of the hotel’s elegant restaurant. With award winning food and a dynamic team of chefs, its dishes look and taste sensational. Light lunches and a generous choice of drinks are available in the lounge, with its welcoming bar and, in the colder months, a homely log fire. If you’re planning a wedding, party or business event, the Duke is the ideal choice. With a wealth of experience in organising celebrations and group events, a range of room options and a full set of facilities and equipment, the hotel has everything you need to ensure your event runs smoothly. And with the backdrop of the Duke’s stunning decor and features, you can be sure your guests will be impressed, whether the occasion is one of business or pleasure. As well as the merits that await guests within, the Duke also offers a fantastically convenient location in the centre of Plymouth. The hotel is a short walk from the city’s abundance of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the historic Plymouth Hoe, Sutton Harbour and the Barbican, with their spectacular sea views. And it’s a mere stone’s throw from two of the South West’s finest entertainment venues, the Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavilions – making the hotel the ideal overnight stop-off or meeting place if you’re catching a show. Whether you’re visiting Plymouth or it’s the city you call home, you’ll find the Duke of Cornwall a pleasure to experience. With its fascinating history, friendly but professional service, and breathtaking style, the Duke is truly a gem in Britain’s Ocean City.

Whilst the hotel is undergoing overdue refurbishment it is still a comfortable stay. Rooms are clean and a good size albeit tired, good WiFi, views are limited due to scaffolding. Great location opposite pavilion, 10 min walk from the hoe and 20 mins walk from train station. What makes the hotel are the staff and food. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good quality with plenty of choice, cooked to order. Bar menu is good, pizzas fresh and great value. Menu in restaurant whilst limited is of very good quality, the pork dish is my favourite along with the hock terrine. I look forward to seeing the hotel once it is fully refurbed it has huge potential.

Great service, lovely breakfast, impressive decor downstairs but the bedrooms are tired. If you're not unlucky with your choice of bedroom though (see other reviews) you're likely to enjoy your stay here. My wife and I stayed with 2 friends after seeing a show at the Theatre Royal only 1/2 mile down the road. Pippa on reception was very welcoming and helpful. We had a couple of other requests for help or information and she was a delight each time. Check-in was very quick and easy. We were both given free upgrades from standard doubles to superior doubles. Since this was practically in the roof I'm not sure we really benefitted! Our lovely South-West climate chose this night to throw down a lot of rain and wind. With it all coming from the South-West, the single-glazed, old sash windows were found a little wanting. We managed to stop them rattling and with the bed comfortable, ended up getting a good night's sleep. The bathroom was very dated but the shower worked fine. The toilet didn't flush every time and was a single-flush type rather than the modern half/full flush combination type. Breakfast was in the beautiful dining room. There was a limited but typical selection of fruits, yogurt, cereals and pastries. The cooked breakfast had all the usual options and was prepared to order. The scrambled egg was very nicely done and the sausages of good quality. Our waitress wasn't fazed by a request for a fried egg 'over-easy' and it was exactly what we got. The toast was simple thin slices of white or brown bread. No thick/healthy/fancy bread used here! Overall, a good breakfast but let down a little by the non-cooked extras. The service over breakfast was very good. Good value and we'd come again.

The Duke of Cornwall is a magnificent old building close to Plymouth Hoe (the sea front) but also near the city and services, so a great location. Staff friendly and helpful, food (breakfast at least) was OK. Car parking is available and its not expensive. Downsides? it really really needs updating, its all clean enough but decoration is like 40 years old and looks tired and dated. our 1st room has a bed so soft it was like a hammock, so we moved, losing our sea view in exchange for some sleep. Its good value, but just don't expect something modern and contemporary.

Stayed one night, despite the building works and scaffolding we had a very good stay. It’s a beautiful hotel and the room itself is very big and comfortable. The staff are really friendly and helpful, we managed to park in the hotel car park so it was free. We also booked in slightly earlier than 3 pm. Nice location and we walked into the Barbican which took 15 mins. We even saw a huge military ship coming in.

Unless you like no sleep, the smell of historic (or maybe still present) Damp, broken windows and 80s furniture and beds that the homeless would skip a sleep on - AVOID THIS HOTEL! The bed is extremely uncomfortable and doesn’t fit against the head board which means your pillows will fall down into the half foot gap The windows are single glazed and can’t be closed due to broken fittings, the noise from boy racers and awful bikes echo in Footsteps from the rooms next door and the corridors can be heard The above three points will mean you will not sleep! My employer booked this hotel and everything was pre paid meaning I couldn’t go elsewhere as I couldn’t claim the expenses. I have actually be paid to stay here and I wanted to leave! The smell in the hotel is rotten and it’s evident there has been previous or continuing damp problems.

A beautiful old hotel with plenty of style, character and open space. Although we didn't dine here, the bedroom and and bathroom were spacious and clean and tidy. The shower was a deluge of water which was fantastic and the bed was very comfortable. Small car park which is £5 per night.

We stay here regularly for business and always receive second to none service. The team of friendly and professional staff, particularly Adam and Louise, never fail to deliver and go the extra mile to ensure our stay is remembered for absolutely the right reasons. It's refreshing to be met with real people, proud of the hotel's heritage, while professionally going about their duties with a smile. Many thanks always, The team at R N Recycling
