We attended a Xmas dinner and dance which I have to say was good, the staff all worked hard even though it was obvious there were not enough of them ! We stayed overnight on what was the coldest night of the year and unfortunately had no heating in the room, despite asking at reception the issue was not resolved. So very disappointing, we left very early to go home to our warm house. I have contacted the hotel since and been offered a coffee and cake when I next visit !!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!! We have visited the grand on many occasions over the years sadly we will not be returning, it is quite obvious that Keith Richardson has stepped away and left management to manage and in my opinion not doing it very well.
We came over from Brixham for a lovely cream tea as a birthday present, The cream tea was one of the best we have had, and the service received by a lovely lady named "Ania" was impeccable. The highest standards of hospitalilty was given to us in this restaurant by this young women. 5*
Fantastic last minute booking at this hotel (literally that morning). Easy to get to and free parking outside (you pay to park in their very tight garage but get a free pass to park in the railway station car park across the road where there were plenty of spaces, would recommend using outside). Easy check in at the main desk. Lady who booked us in was lovely and helpful. All the staff were great and you got a real feeling of old time opulence with piano being played in the evening in the relaxed bar. The hotel décor is lovely with staff in uniforms and plenty around to offer any help you may need. Lifts to all floors and pool (and ramp into the hotel from outside). Plenty of places to sit and bathrooms available. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in with a separate dressing room (think that may have been particular to the shape of our room) and plenty of storage hangers, towels and plug sockets. There was a kettle with tea and coffee making facilities although not much, but reception provided more as our room had initially been set up for only one person, also hairdryer and TV in room which will connect to Netflix etc (we didn't bother). Not much noise from outside (we overlooked the rugby ground) and very good blackout curtains. The breakfast was wonderful, buffet style with plenty of choice and a constant supply of hot food. Staff walking around constantly refilling drinks. The location is wonderful, lovely views of the beach across the road and train station next door with bus stops across the road. It didn't feel busy or cramped as there were lots of rooms to sit and relax in, we particularly liked the library area, quiet reading with games to choose from. We didn't eat in the restaurant for dinner as we walked down the road to a local restaurant but we had a sandwich the following afternoon and it was delicious. The pool was colder than I would have liked and changing rooms were bitter but we had it to ourselves so if not being generally used then I can understand. We just went upstairs with our towels in the lift and changed in our room. I loved this stay, warm, inviting and felt like we had got a lot for what we paid. I would definitely look at staying again if we came back to the area.…
We had a girly night stay for 4 of us on 14th January 2023, we were given room 424 and 422, room 424 was so small you couldn't swing a cat in it i swear my bathroom at hone was bigger, such a disappointment, very worn, bed side tables black where water had leeked into wood! and not one thing that was a tuslly nice, also the window was rattling all night with the wind! We were really looking forward to using the pool, sauna and jacuzzi but when we went down only the pool was open due to a fire, we booked with wowcher and at no point were we told about this! The changing room was freezing cold, and not clean, the shower head came off the wall in my hand so we had to embarrasingly walk back to our room wrapped in just a towel through a supposedly 4* hotel NOT! The bar staff were lovely and the food was delicious! I'm due to go back for 2 nights in February with my husband and now worried instead of looking forward to it 😢…
If you want a dirty room book the Grand...If you want to be woken up 1hr earlier eg 5am instead of 6am book the Grand ...If you don't want any communication from John the manager after leaving him messages and his staff also leaving him emails book the Grand ..If you want poor internet service book the Grand...The list goes on ...And if you want a fabulous view of a lovely electric cable book the Grand ... Reception did not have the correct number to call me back yet the receptionist wrote the number down whilst my phone was in front of her ...Not forgetting the Grand had my details from my booking ...Avoid this hotel
The front was amazing, wet but still very good. The rooms, not so. The rooms itself are looking very tired, evidence of slight mild is apparent. Then we come to the staff. Reception, very very good. In fact I can’t describe how good they were. As for the night staff. I returned after finishing a night shift to be confronted by Marin. I was given a complimentary dribble by reception but he refused to accepted this and demanded all my details. I guess GDOR isn’t apparent in this hotel. Add to this, the threat calling the police. My bill has been paid in full prior to my arrival, and his aggressive approach to the general public means I’d rather my company put me up in the local premier inn. 1/5
We stayed hear over new year . In the Agatha Christie suite . We had to be moved to a family room on the 2 Nd day as the feeling in the bedroom was leaking water quite badly . We were not offered any refund and still not heard from management . Terrible stay . Reception staff were lovely . But that's it . We have stayed in this hotel 5 times before but never again . I don't believe a word the management say . As they had more days off then Santa
I used to visit this hotel frequently however, it’s evident the last couple of years it has become run down. From what used to be a ‘grand’ stay & experience is now not even average and really disappointing. On several floors of the hotel there are leaks and buckets in the corridors catching the water, peeling wall paper from walls. The pool area has become so run down and the jacuzzi was not in use when I visited. I also had afternoon tea and I was appalled that the waiter couldn’t even tell me how many it was for or the selection of sandwiches on offer, they then took a very long time to take our order considering they weren’t busy. I appreciate times are hard following the pandemic but the staff are not being provided adequate training. I have previously worked in hospitality and the service was atrocious. I definitely won’t be rushing back, which is a real shame because it was always a place myself and my family would visit for a weekend.…
Lovely stay iver xmas! Staff were great and full of joy! Breakfast was lovely and the hotel was drcorated really festively! We cant wait to come back! Thankyou aswell to the reception for being so helpful.
Firstly, the main reason why I am writing this is because I believe that it’s important on balance to write a review when you’ve had a great time at a hotel. We checked into the Grand Torquay on Christmas Eve and had the most welcoming reception by the hotel staff. We were offered advice on parking and then offered help with our luggage to our room. We then sought advice about options for a sandwich lunch for Christmas Day as we opted to not book the full Christmas package but we were staying on a dinner bed and breakfast basis so wanted a light lunch on Christmas Day. This request was dealt with promptly and professionally and a specific request was also honoured for the sandwich lunch. We have then spent a great few days at the hotel, all interaction with staff has been wonderful and the food at all meal times was faultless. We stayed in room 301 a refurbished sea view room and again we were not disappointed it was lovely. I hope this review has provided some balance to some of the other reviews but I also understand sometimes as human beings we don’t always get things right and we all have individual experiences.…
