Great hotel . Staff were lovely and attentive and Monica stayed really late to check us in as we had been delayed by the storms. Comfy bed and very clean. Location right next to cathedral entrance. Would definitely return

Great location and a warm welcome. The bed was comfortable and the room spacious. The breakfast was good if a bit meagre. While we thought the layout quirky some might find it a bit challenging given the many steep stairs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our state at Cathedral Gate. The staff was wonderful, very friendly and extremely helpful. The person at the desk carried our luggage to the room and made some great restaurant recommendations. We were in the Augustan Room which faced the main street. We were there for two of the hottest days of the season, and the room did not have air conditioning. This was not a deal breaker for us given the charm and age of the hotel. There was a fan, and we were able to open the windows. The room included a kettle, small television, desk, and bureau. It could have used an extra towel rack in the bathroom, but there was plenty of hot water and good water pressure. This is an old building. It was built before the gates to the cathedral were installed. The floors slope

A lovely quant old building - not for those who have mobility issues as it's a mass of stairs, slopy floors & corridors. However, if you want to spend the night in a lovely old building just beside the cathedral gate this is the place for you(!) Placed very close to the cathedral gate and all the lovely old buildings associated with it. Couldn't fault the customer service. The most gorgeous continental breakfast delivered to our room when expected-fresh fruit, croissants, plenty of tea & coffee-everything you could ask for. We spent the night in the top floor with the 'crook' beams that hold the building up visible. Out room was very comfortable with lovely quality bed linen. We shared a bathroom with another room - which, given the age of the hotel & kit being listed

My stay was everything I could have hoped for! The service was excellent and the charm of an ancient hotel with a view of the Cathedral yard was the exactly what I wanted. The location right at the main gate was thrilling and there are several areas to relax within the hotel. Add great breakfast, an abundance of pillows and windows that open and I could have stayed for a month!

It's taken me a while to get round to writing this review but I think the fact that it hasn't fallen off my 'to do' list, and that I still felt the need to write it more than a month after we visited speaks to the quality and friendliness of our experience. The hotel is beautiful and it's impossible not to sense its long and fascinating history when you're within its walls. Its location in the heart of the old city, and immediately next door to the cathedral only serves to amplify that feeling of wonder. We had a lovely view of Butter Market Square from our very comfortable bedroom and really enjoyed experiencing the contrast between the excited bustle of the daytime and the tranquility of the night through the same window. The manager and the owners were unfailingly lovely

Lovely old (very old) quirky hotel with excellent customer service. You are made to feel welcome during your stay & always a member of staff available to assist with queries. I have stayed at the hotel twice now. Once in Dawn (solo) & once in Joy. The hotel is nice & central for exploring Canterbury & being able to pop back to your room if you want to change, freshen up etc Bedding/towels fresh & clean. Fresh chilled water available at all times to top up as you require. Lovely continental breakfast with plenty of choice & enough to fill you up before you start your day (option for cooked at extra charge but I find the continental meets my needs). Rooms are as you would expect for age of building. Joy had bath only which we knew when we booked. Dawn was a shared bathroom

Great location is its best recommendation. Has lots of steps to get anywhere, many nooks and crannies, some rooms with cathedral view. Seems worn around the edges and could use new rugs/furnishings in the public areas. Fine for a night or two but not a luxury experience. Staff friendly and helpful.
