We booked this B and B through booking.com which doesn't state that it is a Quaker establishment. I have the utmost respect for people who want to practice their religions but would not of stayed here if I was aware of it. Upon arrival there was an afternoon meeting and we were made to feel as though we were interrupting...

We have now taken all three sets of grandchildren to Glenthorne and this was the first time that the youngest had been introduced to the Lake District. It is a Quaker establishment to which I had been introduced many years ago when we were looking for somewhere that was sympathetic to young children and within easy reach of interesting walks....

We stayed at Glenthorne Guest House for two nights whilst walking the coast to coast route. The guesthouse is located on the route as you enter Grasmere in a lovely location with excellent views - an oasis of tranquility yet just a 300 yard walk to the bustle of Grasmere. We were given a wonderful welcome and Grace went out...

Well, this is Grasmere and perhaps the price is more of a surprise having spent 2 nights in perfectly adequate YHAs. I had single occupancy of a twin, but the room configuration meant that had there been two of us we'd have needed clear rules as to who was allowed to stand up at any one time. The Drying Room...

19 Artists arrived at Grasmere in Mid-June for an artists retreat lasting 15 days. We were delighted to find comfortable rooms, beautiful views and good food. We got three meals per day, Full breakfast, sandwiches to go for lunch, tea at 4:30 and a 3-course dinner. The staff at Glenthorne were kind, gracious and very accommodating. They allowed us to...

As an establishment which advertises that it adheres to Quaker values I wasn't sure what to expect but this was a large peaceful establishment. I had a room in the seperate block which had a few steps down and despite the warning sign I stumbled down twice. My room did have a welcome bath though which was nice on the...

Stayed here one night whilst doing the coast to coast, the room was slightly basic but clean and well equipped. There were quite a few people having breakfast but the staff did very well to keep on top of all the different orders. The only negative was that some people tried to order a pack lunch but it was rather...

Have sadly returned home from Gleenthorne after a lovely week meeting new friends to share experiencess, interests and skills with. I am constantly in search of a "quiet room" when staying away from home and my room (2) in the stable block was absolutely perfect - the only noises I heard being birdsong and the bleating of little black lambs...

Just visited for the fifth time and I needed to write and say I visit here with my friends on an annual basis, it's beautiful, grounds gorgeous , setting excellent, brilliant place for walks and visiting other parts of the Lake District. The food is fabulous and the waitresses and staff make so much effort. The kindest and calmness from...

Glenthorne is run as a Quaker establishment but is open to all. Our charitable work depends on a varied use of the guest house during the year and we welcome a rich diversity of guests. We are conveniently located on the "Coast to Coast" path and walking groups regularly use Glenthorne as a base. Individuals and families come to take advantage of the facilities we offer. We have a large car park at the rear of the property, so parking is not an issue. Its location, within 5 minutes walk of the centre of Grasmere village, with open views over the fells makes it an ideal choice for holiday-makers of all ages. ... more   less
