We stayed here for a night as we were going to a gig at the Brewery arts centre which was across the car park about 200yds away away. The private car park made it a cheap parking option. This is a grade 2 listed building built in 1796 on the foundations of cottages for the first GP Dr Ainslee. The... More

Stayed at Highgate for one night during a walking trip through the UK and Ireland. This is an old hotel close to restaurants and shops etc. A good location. The hotel is an old building with all the interesting quirkiness that goes with such places. Some of the floors are a bit uneven, doors are not always at the same... More

This Hotel is in the centre of Kendal with a private car park. This is important in a town with real parking problems. The hot breakfasts are very good but the fruit for breakfast is always tinned grapefruit and prunes with milk. Bedrooms vary in size due to the age of the building. Cats are around the hotel and there... More

Very convenient in the centre of Kendal with excellent parking. The owner is very friendly and helpful and the rooms are comfortable and pleasant. The breakfast is substantial and served promptly. I have stayed at the Highgate several times while working at the Christmas Craft Market at the adjacent Brewery Arts Centre and it has always been a very pleasant... More

Stayed at this hotel for one night. Yes there is a bad smell of cigarettes but the manageress was extremely friendly and helpful. It is an old building with some interesting points and lovely old furniture. Our room (we were told) is the only twin room in the hotel and is located at the top and at the front of... More

Hotel was on a good location for our gig at "The Brewery" also for shopping, lovely breakfast, in need of a good makeover, smells really bad of cigarettes, would stay here again but only for location, quite expensive for the run down hotel, we have stayed in some fantastic hotels for the same price, very overpriced.

Myself and my husband spent a couple of days in Kendal for my husband's birthday and so glad we chose the Highgate Hotel. Linda the owner was very nice and couldn't do enough for us. We were given room 2 at the back.of the hotel which was quiet as the front of the hotel is on the main road. The... More

This is a 17th Century House situated on the main street but with excellent secure parking to the rear for cars/motorcycles. All the floors, doors and stairs are at interesting angles and provide a unique character to the property. If you like and Ibis or a Premier don't stay here. If you want interest and a personal welcome by the... More

As a child, I was sometimes packed off to my Grandparents' house. They were the only smokers in the family. A stay at the Highgate Hotel brought the memories flooding back. It's not all bad - although the location is noisy, even for rooms at the side - but the overwhelming prominence of tobacco has certainly taken it off the... More

I really liked this hotel. It’s a lovely old building, situated on a busy street. Despite this I wasn’t much bothered by any noise from the traffic. The hotel has its own private car park, which you need a code for in order to enter. Since one of the rooms we needed was a family room, we had to call... More
