I stayed for 2 nights in the White Horse and Griffin in Whitby. The room was light and airy and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. The main reason for staying here is its location right in the centre of old Whitby. It's not the cheapest place to stay but I thought it was well worth it and...

Booked to stay in the room 'the wakeful king'. Well it lived up to it's name! The period windows might as well been open to hear the revellers still walking, talking and laughing along the cobbled street below until 3.30 am. The mattress was hard. The bath had a line of scum all round it and had to be cleaned...

It is worth reading the average ratings for this hotel as they about sum up the mixed bag you will get. On the plus side, the hotel is in a fantastic location, the views are lovely, the BAR staff are great, the building is quirky and there is free wifi. However, there is a lack of attention on the basics....

Read the average ratings to get a real feel for this place. It really was just o.k! A wonderful, warm and friendly welcome was followed by a family room in the attic. It was quirky and quaint with two rooms, a bathroom and somewhere to sit. The beds were comfortable and crispy clean but that really is about it. The...

Faultless service, beautifully cooked Belly Pork to start and the shared seafood platter to follow, I've managed and owned seafood restaurants for over 25 years in Edinburgh and this was as good as it gets.

Loved the character and location of the property. Comfy bed, and old school charm. Bathroom wasn't particularly big or clean and shower didn't work so well. Breakfast was a bit of a shambles, we got items we didn't want and the Eggs Benedict was basically poached eggs in water. Barmen were efficient and friendly, the girls serving brekky were pretty...

We stayed for one night in the loft room and really enjoyed the stay. Although the room might not suit being at the top of the hotel we loved it, very comfortable, quirky and lovely views of Whitby from the window. Loved the full english breakfast and also had evening dinner in the hotel which was equally to a high...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
