We have stayed at this hotel several times however sadly after the last stay we will not be staying again. We stayed overnight on a DB & B basis as we have always had a good dining experience. This is no longer the case, despite the menu on the website we were offered salad, pizza or burgher for our evening meal, we have stayed at mant hotels in the uk and worldwide and this was the worse hotel dinner menu we have ever seen - I’m sure this will be put down to Covid, however 2 minutes down the road the menu offered is varied and substantial. We also normally order a bottle of wine to enjoy with our meal, we were told that they don’t provide bottles of wine just glasses, at a price of £9 per glass! We settled for water and bought 2 glasses of wine at the post office 2 minutes away for £4.50 each. We reserved a superior double room, for the age of the hotel the room was fine, however the bed was the most uncomfortable we have ever slept in, the sink in the bathroom was cracked, but that all paled into insignificance by the fact that one of the table lamps had been condemned by the pac tester in May however we stayed in June and this lamp was still lighting up when you switched the main room switch on - health and safety ?? Sadly this is the last time we shall be staying at the Lion in Shrewsbury which is such a shame as we have really enjoyed previous stays

Two nights. Nearly none!. Impressive down stairs. Staff seemed helpful. Signage extremely confusing as still on a one way system. Carpets thread bare and stained. Edges to stairs looked dusty. A no longer working lift. ( there are a lot of stairs) to be fair the booking said no lift. Carpet in room stained. Wall had stains as well. Extremely tight bathroom. Hot tap to bath nearly impossible to use. And shower valve on first day would not turn to hot, only cold. Very unimpressed. We very nearly cut our losses and moved on. Place needs a lot of work on its fabric. Can't comment on the food as didn't eat there. But fail to understand the good reviews.

Shabby chic without the chic, and a double dose of shabby. Not so much tired - more exhausted! The bed and furnishings in our suite were not fit for purpose and dirty. Indeed, the whole hotel has clearly not been updated since Charles Dickens was a lad. Everything about the hotel appears noisy; from the adjacent road to the creaking floors and corridors and transit of people through them at all hours. Indeed, if our time in Shrewsbury was not taken up with house hunting, we would have moved out. Our attempts to talk to the manager were fruitless, and he has yet to call me back as promised by the reception staff.

Mistakenly went into The Lion having booked a table at The Lion and Pheasant and what a mistake! This one has an extremely limited and basic menu. Certainly not ‘fine dining’ - burgers, pizzas and a choice of two salads was the extent of what was on offer on a Friday evening. The local kebab shop would have a greater choice of meal, if that’s what you’re wanting. Already very disappointed, and still under the illusion that we were in the right place (who knew there were two ‘The Lion...’ bars/restaurants literally minutes walk from each other?!), we ordered. It was a simple order, considering it was just the two of us, and the restaurant was almost empty at the time: cheeseburger and a chicken salad, with a side of garlic bread. Service was very slow and we waited the best part of half an hour for any food to arrive, and even then it wasn’t right. Out came a chicken burger rather than a cheeseburger. This was returned and my partner asked for the food he had ordered in its place and I started to eat my salad. Awkwardly, I tried to eek out my own dinner while he waited for his, but the service was so slow I did not succeed. Having finished my meal, and been in the restaurant for the best part of an hour, we decided to leave and get him a McDonalds instead. Do yourself the favour, don’t bother with this place. There are plenty more places to eat.

We had a good overnight stay. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and the place was clean. We had a nice room, but it needed an overhaul - old mattress, basin taps and shower dripped, etc. Having said that, the place is old with plenty of character. Breakfast was fine with a full English option. Location was very good in the centre of town, the train station less than 10 minutes walk away. Overall a good value for money stay.
