Hotel not quite up to 'luxury' standard but it has a good restaurant and an excellent somellier in Luke, whose suggestions we loved. Our room seemed a little tired and not quite as spotless as we remember from our last visit (albeit some years ago) - but its location overlooking the Tyne is still wonderful.

A big thank to Emma, the management and staff at HDV this weekend for our fabulous wedding. The food, venue, service and attention to detail not only exceeded our expectations but many of our guests said the same. A big shout out to David and Abdul who kept everyone "topped up" way into the evening celebrations!

We went to Hotel du Vin on a Sunday and were greeted by an extremely friendly young man. He showed us to our table and enquired if we’d had a nice day then recommended the Sunday roast. The menu is very limited and as for Sunday roast there was no choice as they only do roast beef which would not be my first choice. Knowing that beef is normally served pink and I do not like raw meat I asked for mine to be well done. When the plate was put in front of me there were 2 small slices of beef. A jug of gravy and a large Yorkshire pudding. Then between me and my husband they brought a bowl of mixed vegetables. The beef was dreadful I had to cut so much fat off which turned my stomach. The vegetables a mixture of green beans, broccoli, peas, cabbage, carrots and roast potatoes. Unfortunately they were lukewarm & the roast potatoes were very pale and tasted stale. The Yorkshire pudding was crispy but the bottom was full of oil. The gravy was the best thing on the plate! One of the waiters asked if everything was alright and my hubby pointed out the fat I’d had to remove from my meat. Give him his dues he did ask if I wanted something else but we were already tucking into the rest and I didn’t want to make a fuss. When he came back to take our plates away, when we were finished, he said he’d spoken to the chef and it’s the cut of sirloin they use for Sunday lunch again I would not serve sirloin for a Sunday roast. As all I could taste was the oil from the Yorkshire pudding I asked for a pot of tea which was good. They have lovely milk jugs in the shape of a cow and the teapot holds a few cups. We both decided on pear and almond tart. I was extremely disappointed when a really small slice of cake was brought to me. I was expecting a tart with almond paste and sliced pears! The cake was bland, did not taste of almonds at all and I found 1 minuscule sliver of pear encased in cake. The ice cream was ok. I found the prices are very high considering the poor quality of the ingredients. Don’t think we’ll go back.

Beautiful hotel and room, fabulous staff, and great food! Stayed for a weekend in a junior room and it was stunning. Love the stand alone bath and huge shower and the bed was so comfy, we didn’t want to get out on Sunday morning and go home. The breakfasts were lovely using local produce and dinner on Saturday was very pleasant. All made even better by the fabulous staff, particularly Luke who is so attentive but not in an over bearing way. Can’t wait to stay again soon.
