#7 of 89 hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne
Travellers' Choice
A grand house with contemporary style, a leafy setting near the heart of the city. Jesmond Dene House is neither a townhouse nor a country house hotel. It's simply 40 well-designed bedrooms and suites in a richly historic building offering understated luxury and rather good food. Overlooking the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene, the privately owned hotel guarantees peace, escapism and a refreshing change. Newcastle's city centre, however, is only a five-minute drive. The hotel recently received 4 red stars and the AA Hotel of the Year 2008-2009. Our restaurant Fern is an upmarket neighbourhood Dining Room and Bar, with generosity and the highest standard of produce at its core. Our food is; contemporary, non-fussy, and prepared with love, care and attention. We offer relaxed, informal Geordie hospitality, and memorable dining experiences. Ferns uncompromising approach to the finer details of hospitality makes Fern the ideal place to, meet, eat, drink & celebrate.

It's such a shame that our favourite hotel when visiting our daughter now has events nearly every evening we stay to the point that next time we will stay at another hotel. They are having weddings all the time and parties and if you stay in the more expensive suites in the newer part of the hotel it's very noisy. Loud pumping music was going on way last 11pm and it's really disruptive. screaming kids are outside of the rooms and buildings and it's put us off staying here completely.

During my working life I have stayed at many so called "Country House" hotels but I can honestly say this is not one of the best! It is a converted country house and is very comfortable; there is lots of polished wood and old fashioned features that make it very attractive. The prices that are charged for the rooms are commensurate with this type of hotel but the food lets it down big time! The diner menu is limited and, in my opinion, not worth what is charged. When I went to my room I read the details about the hotel and was informed that the head chef was a finalist on "Masterchef" - unfortunately the details did not extend as to when??? I found the food in the main dining room was limited in it's choice; mediocre in its' cooking and small portions for the price that was being charged! I was, however, prepared to see how better breakfast might be - it went downhill! I ordered the full English: the bacon was hard, over cooked and difficult to cut; the eggs were totally undercooked - why do chefs think that a "Well cooked" egg has to have the gelatinous white still runny all over the egg and totally off-putting? The portions were small and we had to ask twice for extra toast, which never came! Whoever owns this hotel ought to get up off their backside and make some changes that warrant the charges they are making!! The rooms are very nice; you have all the facities that you need; but the food is a big let down!! Change the Chef and get one who knows how to give the guests a varied menu that is both meat, vegetarian and vegan but gives a much better selection than the one we had!! Needless to say, I will not be staying at this hotel again until I am informed that they have changed their menus and got a chef who knows what he/she is doing!!

Lovely venue and gardens. A bit pricey but you would expect that. Minibar, tea coffee and milk not refilled on room cleaning. It's an old building and whenever someone opens a door my room door rattled as if it was being opened. Nice property but attention needed in certain areas

This is my second visit and an altogether better experience from last time. We were served afternoon tea in the Garden Room by an excellent Italian(?) waiter. The food was excellent in both taste and appearance and for once the crockery really was china. They boxed-up cakes we could not eat without the quibble of having to sign a disclaimer as we had to elsewhere. It was a pity that the waiter could not keep his Covid mask over his nose, but even that does not stop me from giving this a rare 5 stars.

What a beautiful hotel this is! Situated at the edge of the leafy suburb of Jesmond, with the lush and picturesque Jesmond Dene park as a backdrop, it's hard to imagine a more perfect location in this great city. The room we have now booked twice - Room 20 - is so close to the tree tops you feel you could reach out and touch them. There is a small balcony from which to take in the view or a bay window to sit in and relax. Classic FM is playing softly on the radio as you enter your room. The room itself - like all the others I'm sure - is immaculate and stylish. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The hotel interior is..... ....I think you get the message. It's certainly not a cheap stay and the Fern restaurant is pricey too. But - cliche alert - I'd say with Jesmond Dene House, you get what you pay for: luxury, service, quality, style. For that occasional treat, it's worth it.
