We stayed at the Angel Hotel for a week in July and it proved the perfect base for a walking holiday in the Black Mountains. Many walks can start at the door of the hotel, so no need to drive. We parked in the nearby Bus Station, where there were always plenty of spaces, and took advantage of the 6 day parking permit for about £27. It was a two minute walk to the hotel from there. The hotel itself was lovely, with professional and helpful staff, immaculate bedrooms and delicious food. The fresh flowers in the room were a special touch, and the daily homemade biscuits were an added bonus. Breakfast was plentiful, freshly cooked and there was a lot of choice. The croissants from their own bakery were particularly good. We ate in the bar, very good, but also enjoyed Boonta Too and Gurkha Corner. We would definitely return to stay and eat at the Angel should we be in the Black Mountains again.

We booked 2 nights in this lovely Hotel together with a Car Parking Space, when we arrived the car park was rather busy but to our surprise we noticed a space had been reserved by a large moveable board with our name on it which meant that when we went out our space would not be taken. Arriving in our room on a very hot afternoon we appreciated the air-conditioning unit which blended into the room and was extremely efficient. Room and en-suite were very comfortable and Breakfast was delicious with a great choice of food and both days we had a guest with us and the extra cost for that breakfast was very reasonable. It was lovely to stay in a Hotel where you could see the Staff wanted to make your stay special. We hope to come back soon as it is a great stop off to further afield in Wales as well as Abergavenny being a lovely place to stay.

This was our first visit to the Angel at Abergavenny, but it most certainly won’t be our last. From the time you enter the hotel to the time you leave, you’re made to feel special. The staff are delightful, very customer focussed and pleasant. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. The rooms were also very quiet. I’ve stayed at hotels in the past, and from 7.00am onwards, all you can hear is the sound of slamming of doors and showers being turned on. We had none of that, it thank goodness we had our alarm set for 8.15 or we’d probably still be there! The breakfast in the morning was nothing short of delicious and very filling; so much so that I’m not sure I’ll need to eat for the rest of the day.
We stayed at the Angel as it was the first of the Christmas market weekends. If you are staying at the Angel on such an occasion, it would be well worth you booking a car space in the hotel car park - it’s £15 well spent as we didn’t have to drive around looking for a space and all the other spaces in the car park were full.
All is all, this is most definitely one of the nicest hotels it has been our good fortune in which to stay.

Had a delicious meal at The Angel Hotel. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and professional. The fox hunter bar is cosy with an open fire and the oak room had a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend. We thought it would be expensive but were very surprised at the value for money, given the quality of food, drink and warm welcome we received. The staff are excellent and are obviously trained to a very high standard. Extremely clean with attention to detail. The hotel and staff made our 20th wedding anniversary a memorable evening. We will definitely dine there more regularly.

We took advantage of the “Spring Fling” offer for an overnight stay with meals included. We were very impressed with every aspect of our visit and will definitely return for similar deals. The service was impeccable, room was luxurious and the evening meal & breakfast was “blasus iawn!” We had the Price Fixe menu - a great choice and very good value, especially as vegetarian options could be selected from the main menu. We also enjoyed cocktails in the busy bar and met and chatted with other guests who were also enjoying their stay. Due to the popularity of this venue we would recommend booking meals. A lovely treat. Not to be missed. Diolch yn fawr!

The Angel is one of those hotels that gets everything right. My wife and I had a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable stay between Christmas and New Year.
Without doubt, the key to it's success is the quality of the staff, individually and as a team. Many thanks to all of you for your warm welcome.
Our room: It was immaculately clean and the quality of the decor and finish, furnishings, little extras like quality toiletries, complementary biscuits, ironing board, fresh milk available, large and very comfortable bed etc...were outstanding. We only spoke to two house keepers, Ola and Anna, and they were so positive and enthusiastic. We returned to a perfectly refreshed room every day.
The bar: Is classy and has a range of comfy tables in a panelled room with a log fire, where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink. A couple of times, I found a quiet corner to read my paper and enjoy a few real ale pints..heaven. The two staff I spoke to, Nick and Pawan, afforded me their very best service en par with the London Ritz.
The Dining Room: Every item on the menu was fresh, the best of local produce where possible, delicious and well presented, without too many fine dining 'dabs and swirls'. Well done chefs. We enjoyed three evening meals there. The stars of the show were again the fantastic serving staff who proffered suggestions, had great knowledge of the dishes and all enjoyed a chat and banter. There was a much larger team, who were all excellent, but we'd like to say thank you to Patrick (a legend), Sonuk and Daya for their generous time and help.
Breakfast: Again we were offered a menu of dishes and drinks, all brought to the table by a team of servers. They were keen to help and fully met requests for replemishments...brought with a smile. Well done Ellis for matching the hardwork and helpfulness of the girls. And Magella who was everywhere, many thanks. I could not say no to the 'Full Welsh'..a huge plate of local eggs, bacon, sausage etc. Who needed lunch after that? Delicious.
The Reception: They were all super helpful and added to our day with suggestions and recommendations. Why employ a concierge. Many thanks Clare.
The whole place ran like a well oiled machine, staffed by a brilliant team of staff. Our experience could be described as warm, welcoming and homely.
If I had one last comment, I suppose I agree with the Reviews referring to the price of drinks in the bar and restaurant. Given what I said above, there must be overheads to cover, and it keeps the Basil Fawlty 'Riff-Raff" out, nevertheless I know some guests chose to drink (and maybe subsequently eat) elsewhere ...just saying. This will not effect our decision to return. See you soon....

The Angel continues to do what it has done for many years and do it very well. Friendly and knowledgeable staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. Spacious rooms with character, immensely comfortable beds - if breakfast was not so good it would be hard to leave my bed - and attention to detail like the fresh ground coffee in the room. A great location, central to the town yet even the front bedrooms are quiet - for Abergavenny itself of for exploring the surrounding area which is packed full of interest. The close link with the Walnut Tree makes the choice of where to eat really difficult.

We had a wonderful 4 nights. There is everything to love about staying at the Angel. Let’s start with the incredible hospitality. Warm and friendly throughout from front of house staff ( Chris and Nicky spring to mind) , those in the restaurant and bar and housekeeping. Nick stood out , he looked after us brilliantly in the evenings. The fire in the bar always lit, soft music playing and he and his staff were attentive but not in our face. We were staying as part of special wedding anniversary celebration and also a trip down memory lane ( our much loved boy - cocker spaniel died unexpectedly last year and had loved the food, though we’d never stayed.
The room was fabulous, We had a deluxe room ( room 8 ), gorgeous decor and a big comfey bed. Fabulous bedding. We returned each day to the radio playing gently, lovely to come back to. Home made biscuits are part of their tea and coffee room tray. We had breakfast most mornings, in the oak room, good breakfasts and friendly service. The bread from their bakery is memorable.
Our preference was to eat dinner in the bar. The food was exceptional. We had 2 evening meals. I loved my starters of scallops and prawn cocktail, mains of ravioli with walnuts and sage, mussels in thai green sauce with chips. My hubby loved his starter’s and his mains, a fillet steak and his stand out dish of our trip, was their fish and chips. He had been umming and arring a bit about going for fish and chips as seemed pricey at £24. But, it was so worth it, sweet fish and light v crispy batter
This hotel goes straight into my top 3 places in the world to stay. Wonderful service in a gorgeous setting both inside and the surrounding area. So good, we have booked to go back.

An afternoon tea gift from the family was an excellent idea! We visited on Thursday 7th November. The staff were most welcoming and helpful. The setting was delightful in a busy dining area where a number of other guests were enjoying their afternoon tea also. The options for the tea were extensive and the staff explained all the possible combinations. The flavours and choices were very good with top ups of drinks provided. Needless to say we didn’t manage to eat all of the items and so staff readily boxed up the remains in nicely prepared boxes. The parking was possibly an issue but using the nearby council car park it cost £2 for 2 hours. You could possibly park in a near by supermarket with free parking for 90 minutes. The hotel does have its own car park to the rear but we didn’t bother asking about using that. Overall this was a super experience compared to lots of similar occasions we have taken afternoon tea.The family run hotel has recently been taken over by a corporate brand so I’m not sure if the same attention to detail will prevail.

My partner and I stayed at the Angel Hotel for a two night stay. From checking in to checking out the hotel saw to all our needs. The room which looked out onto the main road was superb and was so quiet, no road noise whatsoever. Slight noise from guests above but nothing that spoilt our stay. The room had ample storage space with a large wardrobe and shelves within, where we found hairdryer and iron. The bathroom was beautiful, with complimentary toiletries and a lovely walk in shower. The bedroom (we had bedroom 8) was decorated so tastefully, with radio, tea making facilities and the most comfortable bed with the best pillows ever. Although we stayed for a family funeral we would definitely love to return under better circumstances to enjoy the sights and flavours of Abergavenny to the fullest. Thank you to all the staff who were polite, courteous and a asset to the hotel.
