The Castle of Brecon hotel garners mixed reviews, with guests frequently lauding its prime location convenient for exploring Brecon. While the hotel's cleanliness generally receives praise, some visitors highlight room for improvement. The historic charm contributes to the atmosphere, albeit alongside calls for updates.
Guests experience varying levels of satisfaction with the service and amenities, ranging from commendations of friendly staff and cozy rooms to critiques of maintenance needs and occasional lackluster service. The consensus suggests that while some find value, others consider the hotel overpriced given its current state.

Stayed here on a wowcher deal for valentines room was small but lovely clean & cosy.
Staff was amazing friends especially the two lady’s at breakfast couldn’t do enough for you.
Food was lovely aswell cannot fault it.
The only downside about it was we had to sit in an empty room on our own for our meal that was included in our deal was told we could go in the main restaurant if we paid £25 each & had the valentines menu I felt like we was treated second class because we booked a deal.
In my opinion if you find a deal you should still be treated the same as everyone else no different this made us feel quite embarrassed to be fair & I feel the staff who had to look after us was embarrassed aswell.
I book a lot of wowcher/groupon deals & have never been treated any different apart from this occasion.

We booked a table here for the garden as a treat as we was visiting Brecon for the day. When we entered floor markings were in place and the track and trace book, but the older lady behind the bar just threw some menus at us. The garden itself looks like its need work with weeds, and tired looking plants. The food was served in cardboard takeaway containers with wooden cutlery, which I cant understand as you can drink from glasses??? surely the dishwasher kills the same germs that would be on plates and cutlery? The burger was mediocre and food overall not up to much. Overall disappointing and wont return.

I will start by saying We love this hotel and have stayed here several times.
The hotel itself is a beautiful building and full of character and atmosphere which is why We love it so much.
Our previous visits were also budget breaks but, sadly, this one is not of the same standard.
The problem is the room.
The deal for 2 nights was exactly the same as before but the previous rooms were so much better in that they were beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and spacious and comfortable.
Our current room for this stay falls so far below that standard that it could be in a different hotel altogether!
Cobwebs in the bathroom, a non working wash basin plug, a stained toilet bowl with suspicious stains around the pedestal base and the ceilings of both bathroom and bedroom stained and flaking presumably from water leaks at some stage. ( see picture ).
The room has a very awkward layout making it very cramped and uncomfortable.
There is just no space and the general appearance is shabby, jaded and uninviting.
It saddens me to have to say this but this is by far the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in, falling far below the minimum standard I would expect of even the most basic budget hotel.
Having said that, the hotel is very good in all other aspects. Breakfast menu choice is excellent, ( although, like other reviewers I too would prefer a pot of coffee rather than having to ask for refills), and the restaurant menu is good.
Both these areas are light, airy and very clean.
Bar areas are also comfortable and inviting.
All in all this is a really lovely old hotel but the standard of

Valentines Day Treat..
Before posting this review I did actually e-mail the hotel manager, Ms Lloyd, who thus far hasn't responded, I also complained at reception and got a blank glazed looked.
We booked the dine and stay deal through Wowcher for Valentines
I emailed a head to confirm that we could have a room with a bath and explained this was a special stay.
Our room, was clearly not fit for man or beast, I have a list as long as your arm
however,
The ceiling above the bed, I laid there fearing that masonry would land on my face.
The mattress it's self, awful - Saggy, tired, lumpy.
The toilet seat lid that wouldn't stay up and the bowl its self was stained
The dust and dirt in both bedroom and bathroom, utterly shocking
The furniture in the room was generally tired or broken
Windows were misted up, you couldn't see out of them
The room smelt of damp and the walls had damp patches and black mould.
What I don't understand is the hotel wasn't full, why put guests in such a awful room?
Because is was Valentines, I didn't want to ruin our special time together however left feeling very let down.

The room was lovely, I had no problems with that. However, there were several problems with the service. Despite booking a table, they failed to do so. We had to rebook. The starter was lukewarm, and miniscule. The main meal was reasonable although the vegetables were barely cooked. We had to attract the attention of the waiting staff several times to chase our requests; the pastry on the chocolate tart was thick and solid and the ice cream was made from a cheap powdered substance. We were charged £24 for a £6 bottle of wine. And on checking out, we were overcharged by £90!
So, in short the room was fairly good, but the food and service was average. Not what I expect for £150 a night.

We booked the hotel for a stay over the Jubilee bank holiday for our anniversary.
When we arrived at the hotel I was a bit disappointed that it looked tired and in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint.
The reception area was ok, worn window benches, cheap mats on the floor, the bar area was very nice though.
The hallway down to our room seemed to have random bits of furniture like they’d been dumped there and the floor was so wonky that we both stumbled like were drunk.
The floor was the same in the room.
The room was clean and comfortable, the bed was quite firm but I like that.
The walls in the room were in real need of painting, they looked dirty although they weren’t, they were just a bit battered.
The electric shower was pretty pathetic, luckily I don’t have very thick hair to wash!
There were a nice selection of hot drinks and some biscuits with the kettle which was nice.
We sat in the garden and had a drink in the afternoon and it was lovely out there, beautiful view and lovely garden.
We booked in the restaurant for our evening meal, we ordered a glass of wine each which came quickly and was really nice.
We looked at the menu and nothing took our fancy, the table next to us had the pie and it didn’t look great so we decided to just drink our wine and go into town for food.
The restaurant menu was a basic pub menu at restaurant prices.
The people in the room above us walked around from about 6am which wouldn’t normally be a problem but the floor boards are so noisy that I kept being woken up.
The breakfast in the morning was ok, good choice but the cooked breakfast wasn’t very warm as it was all out under heat lamps.
We enjoyed our time in Brecon and the room served its purpose. The hotel could be amazing, it’s beautifully situated and some parts, like the restaurant and bar seem like they’ve had work done.

Stayed for just one night in this hotel January. The bedroom was warm and clean, but the old style sash window was rotten and very draughty, but it was not a very cold night, so it was not an issue. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and our dinner and breakfast was very good and gluten free options were available for me as I am a Coeliac. The outside area of this hotel has plenty of seating and would be a beautiful spot in the summer for all fresco eating.

I hate giving bad reviews so let’s start with the positives. Setting is lovely with the views of the mountains and despite what other recent reviews have said the food (we had dinner and breakfast) was really nice. It’s a magnificent building and has some amazing rooms downstairs. Sadly the bedroom was extremely disappointing. Filthy windows, dated decor, stained walls and ceiling. It it was £50 we would expect it but it was over £100 which was just too much! It’s such a shame the hotel didn’t invest during to lockdowns as with some tlc they could make big improvements. I hope now they’re busy (they’re booked up) that they put some of this revenue back into the rooms

Very poor food. I ordered the duck which came as two tough lumps one of which I couldnt even get my fork into it much less cut and eat. My friend took it home for her dog. The vetetables were luke warm and the whole presentation poor. Didnt risk a dessert but did order coffe it was suposed to be latte but was tastless and watery. I have eaten in the Castle before and had a nice meal so not sure why it has deteriorated so much.

Not that I'm aware of.
No Dogs
Sorry don’t know - try google!
Dog friendly? I don't know, I didn't see any dogs in there - luckily as I don't like dogs in restaurants.
I think so.... but we stayed in a 'cottage' which certainly was. It was excellent. Check-out the web site (it was so good we are going back in 2 weeks!)
