Positive: great location (short, walking distance to the center and right near the main bus station, perfect for my trip), friendly stuff, good breakfast. Negative: the room and hotel in general look like they could use some renovation (although, being an old building, might not be so easy to renovate it).

Cheap n cheerful, a bit run down but warm spacious room with a very basic en suite. Good standard of cleanliness throughout too. Young staff friendly but not hugely efficient; was waiting 10 minutes in the breakfast room before any of them came in. Good variety of breakfasty food but I noticed a couple of people left their sausages and...

When going to airport it is more than easy to step out and tram to airport and if you prefer bus the station is nearby. Good selection...

The only down side is there are a lot of stairs if your at the top, no lift. You have to park in multi storey car park at...

Worst stay EVER! The place is literally crumbling down! The only spot where you get Wi-fi is in their ridiculously small lobby (ie the pictures attached). We got a room in the basement with hardly any light which was very loud because it gave directly on the street so BRING EAR PLUGS if you want to sleep! The Bathroom was...

The beds are soft, the tile in the bathroom is lumpy, the carter is like scratchy felt, and housekeeping is poor. There were no amenities given for the bathroom except a little bar of soap. The beds weren't made daily, fresh towels are only given every three days, but there were not any fresh bed linens given in a four...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
