Our new favourite place to stay in Edinburgh. If you’re looking for a luxury stay that’s also unusual, then look no further. Run by the Britannia Trust, this converted lighthouse tender is simply outstanding. When I first considered it, my first thought was; “is it going to be cramped?” Nothing could be further from the truth. The attention to detail here is outstanding; from the hammered steel ceiling in the bar designed to represent reflections on water to the individually designed suede headboards depicting Scottish lighthouse locations, so much has been considered.
If you have any interest/ nautical connections, you’ll love it. If you like excellent service & attention to detail, you’ll love it.
It was early January, most of the best restaurants are having a well earned break so we wanted somewhere we could eat as well as stay. The Lighthouse Bar did not disappoint. Great cocktails (& mocktails) to start & the food was well presented & delicious. Breakfast next morning was equally enjoyable with a great buffet & choice of cooked breakfast. Karis looked after us on both occasions & is a prime example of what makes Fingal special; a balance of a friendly smiley face & a thoroughly professional approach.
We loved our tour of the ship & were delighted to be given complimentary tickets to visit Britannia next day.
Well done to everyone involved in this new venture. Outstanding 👍

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a 2 night stay in the Skerryvore Suite. The suite itself is exceptional, such a high standard throughout with some very classy touches. The bed was extremely comfortable as is the lounge area.
Before we were due to stay the staff were so helpful and accommodating to any requests we had. This was no different when we arrived for check in. My wife and I both noted the thorough safety measures that were in place and it may seem insignificant but the sanitizer products actually smelled pleasant rather than like pure alcohol.
We dined in the Lighthouse restaurant our first night, we were not disappointed. The food was amazing and pair with a beautiful wine chosen by the sommelier. We finished off with some amazing cocktails in the bar and then on our private deck that the suite offers.
The list of positives are endless about our experience of Fingal but one thing that will certainly stick with us is the service. Every member of staff went above and beyond to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Sitting in the restaurant you could tell that this was the case for every guest, not just because we were celebrating an anniversary.
I’d thoroughly recommend a visit, if not to stay then for afternoon tea, dinner or even a drink.

Dear Tourist22249360575, Thank you for taking the time to write such kind words about your stay onboard Fingal! We are delighted you had such a lovely celebration with us. The Skerryvore suite, much like the Skerryvore lighthouse and Skerryvore band, is exceptional. We pride ourselves on our crew and are so pleased you found them to be so accommodating and that they enhanced your stay with us. Our chefs likewise are something to proud of, they use only the very best of local suppliers and produce and this shows in the amazing dishes they present. We look forward to welcoming you back onboard soon. Kind Regards, Morven Shaw Duty Manager

Absolutely top class break on Leith waterfront. The hotel is completely unique, a wonderful conversion of a lighthouse ship to a 5 star destination, while preserving the spirit of the sea. From check in onwards, the staff were totally professional and helpful at all times, bearing in mind the added pressure of coping with Covid19 too. Hygiene and sanitisation was impeccable in public areas and rooms, with sensible arrangements allowing guests to remain safe. Our cabin was Neist Point which was superbly finished with great cabinetry and classy finishes, making it stand apart from most 'ordinary' 5 star hotel rooms. Terrific full Scottish breakfast gave us a fine start to each day for exploring Leith and its surroundings. All in all a superb couple of days in Edinburgh, made even better by the members of the crew, who went the extra mile to make our stay so enjoyable. A special thanks to Mari-Nel, who gave us a most interesting history and tour of the ship. We'll be back!

My boyfriend and I stayed on the Fingal in November last year for my birthday ( his surprise for me😁) it was amazing! The staff greeted us and showed us to our room ( which was named after our local lighthouse, nice touch) it was small and perfectly formed, leather clad wardrobe doors ( local leather we were told) coffee machine, tea things etc. The bed was so comfortable and the pillows were top notch too ( I’m fussy) . A lovely idea to stay on a converted lighthouse boat, particularly special to us as we live were she was based and my boyfriend had been on her as a child when she was a working boat. The food was excellent ( again I’m fussy) I really couldn’t find fault with one single aspect of our stay. I totally recommend staying there, and handy for shops and a visit to the royal yacht Britannia. Total perfection x 👌🏼😁

Dear sallyp164, Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. It was a pleasure to have you and your boyfriend stay with us last year and I am so pleased you had such an amazing birthday surprise. Fingal was based in Oban for many years and it is always so lovely to meet guests who used to work on her or have some connection to her working history. I am glad your boyfriend was able to come back on board and see the transformation. Our wardrobes are clad with Andrew Muirhead leather who are based in Glasgow, and the lovely seafoam green colour of the leather was inspired by the colours in our Engine Room. We would love to welcome you back again soon, so please get in touch to make your next reservation. Kind regards, Kirsty McKee Guest Relations Duty Manager

If you are looking for a true 5 Star experience then Fingal is the place to go. From attentive professional staff (Crew), luxury indulgent surroundings to excellent delicious food!
We booked Fingal as a little treat to ourselves due to missing out on various celebrations and trips away unfortunately cancelled due to COVID19.
From our arrival the service was impeccable, nothing was too much trouble with friendly knowledgably crew. Check in was simple, efficient and we were shown to our cabin which is a nice touch.
We booked a Luxury Cabin (Hyskeir) at the Stern on the Port side with direct access to the deck on the Supper & Stay Package. The cabin was large with nice facilities and decorated in keeping with the ship’s previous life and theme. I would say the only downside was not being able to open the windows to allow a little bit of fresh air to circulate, but then that may have been a restriction of the restoration. There is air con and also the door to access the deck though.
The Lighthouse Bar & Restaurant is perfectly positioned at the top of the ship with views over the port. We had a lovely meal which was served and presented to the highest standard. Breakfast was freshly cooked with plenty of choice and variety.
The entire place is “COVID 19 Safe” all staff wearing masks, guests wearing them while walking around, hand sanitising on check in, arriving at the restaurant and on each table.
Fingal and its crew make it the perfect place for a little bit of indulgence and the VIP Treatment, we will be back.

My partner and I stayed a night at the start of September 2021. We were greeted at the entrance by the management team who were very positive and chatty. As we checked into the room the payment was taken ( I found this to be a bit unusual at first but having got it out of the way early, leaving the hotel was far easier and much more fluid ). We were then escorted to our room by the manager himself, the breakfast arrangements were clearly explained and we were then offered a tour of the ship.
The ship is stunning ! Every little detail seems to have been meticulously thought out. All of the facilities including the ballroom, bar and restaurant are beautifully presented and the entire ship oozes class. The rooms themselves are just as stunning! The bed was incredibly comfortable and the bathroom was beautifully finished with stunning taps and a large shower. Inside the cupboard along with the masses of storage was a safe, slippers and a good hairdryer. The mini bar is very well priced and loaded with lots of great snacks and upon arrival had been sealed to say no one had been in since last cleaned. The only thing I could fault the room on was the toilet system. The original vacuum system is still in operation and its unfortunately pretty loud. I can totally understand why that system is still used but you do hear your neighbors toilets being flushed unfortunately. Other than that the room was absolutely stunning and the attention to detail is definitely there.
The room also included 2 tickets to visit Royal Yacht Britannia (also worth a visit) which we visited the next day. It turns out that the same team responsible for preparing the Royal Yacht Britannia for its decommissioning were responsible for the refurbishment of Fingal. The toiletries found in the Fingals bathroom could be purchased in the Royal Yacht Britannia which was a nice touch.
My gripes: The hotel, all be it beautiful, is unarguably one of the more expensive places to stay in Edinburgh and with that comes a couple of expectations. At the risk of sounding miserable, there was no complimentary drink on arrival and I was a little disappointed to have been woken up by a child running up and down the corridor in the morning.
Overall the staff were fantastic and the hotel was as beautiful as it looked in the pictures . It was a lovely experience getting to stay aboard the Fingal.

As a retirement treat for me, my wife booked a surprise stay on Fingal. All I can say is what a great choice.
From the moment we arrived the staff were superb and attentive.
When we arrived our room wasn’t ready, we did arrive earlier than check-in, so decided to go up to the restaurant for a coffee. The chef even made us cakes to go with the coffee, superb touch.
We were in Neist Point and the room was beautiful, the decor, cleanliness and comfort couldn’t be questioned.
The pleasing thing was that staff were continuously sanitising the corridor hand rails and guest room door handles. In this time of uncertainty, this very much put you at ease, knowing they were taking guest safety seriously.
Our dinner in the restaurant was first class. Our waitress Carys was brilliant and when she heard it was a retirement treat, she organised a complimentary bottle of Prosecco to be sent to our cabin. Nice touch, along with the bread rolls she kept offering us.
Breakfast was another example of the excellence the staff and team strive for. The Eggs Royale and the Scottish breakfast were again excellent along with the service and flexibility shown by the restaurant staff.
Overall, faultless. A stay on Fingal is one you will remember for a long time. Don’t miss out on this hotel, especially for a special occasion.
We will certainly be back.

If you want a staycation that is pretty unique book a night or two on the Fingal in Leith, near Edinburgh. From stepping aboard to disembarking the experience is one of a kind. We stayed in a Luxury room which was beautifully appointed with oh so comfortable furnishings. With a door onto the deck we could access a larger sun deck at the stern of the ship.
The room offers air conditioning, tea, coffee, safe and minibar, and a beautiful rain shower room with Noble Isle toiletries.
The Fingal, once servicing the Lighthouses off Scotland’s coastline, is now docked in Leith. As part of the Royal Yacht Britannia group this ship has been beautifully restored and enhanced, to a level of detail above and beyond your typical 5 star hotel.
The ship also boasts a team of staff that will help make your stay one you will remember. Taking time to get to know the guests they make sure you every need is catered for, they will even provide you with a tour of the ships bridge, ballroom and engine room should you want to see something different.
On deck 2 you will find the bar and Lighthouse restaurant. The menu is limited but the food prepared to the highest standards and then served by lovely attentive staff, who are only too happy to engage in conversation about your stay of day away from ship.
Prices are not the cheapest but you do not leave feeling your stay was not value for money, you leave knowing you have relaxed and enjoyed something rather unique.
We will definitely be returning

Our trip on Fingal was absolutely amazing! I booked a few days away for my husbands 30th, wanted to book somewhere special and I came across Fingal, it was (as expected) a once in a life time experience, the ship was absolutely beautiful! Our stay in Edinburgh was amazing! We loved the city so much but Fingal was the highlight of our trip.
The cabin was amazing with rooms being named after lighthouses around Scotland, and beautifully decorated nautical/ship themed. They were also so cosy, comfortable but extremely classy and stylish.
Our welcome was amazing, we had a range of chocolate/fudges left in the room including a happy birthday chocolates, along with our tickets for the Royal Britannia, it was a truly special welcome and my husband was so appreciative and amazed by the ship and the room.
Also I was really impressed by how they adapted the room for our one year old, I had informed the team beforehand that we had a 1 year old and that if possible we could have a cot set up in the room. They assured me it wouldn’t be a problem.
Normally in hotels you get a travel cot set up in your room (sometimes you’re expected to make up the crib yourself) we arrived to an adorable crib (Not a travel cit but a proper wooden sturdy crib) set up, with a soft toy duck to play with during our trip, which our son loved!!! (Ducks are actually his favourite animal) It was so lovely and cosy we were truly thankful and he absolutely loved the room and enjoyed the ship so much.
I had also booked dinner for our first night, for my husband’s birthday meal, again absolutely delicious and amazing! Breakfast was our favourite, there was such a lovely lady (I wish I knew the name of) that would play and chat to our son at breakfast time, She was absolutely amazing! I don’t know her name but she was truly amazing and so friendly, think our son preferred her company to ours. She also gave us great recommendations for sightseeing in Edinburgh also.
The staff are so lovely, they are willing to do anything to make your trip special, we didn’t have to worry about our sons milk, they hotel were happy to bring warm milk to the room whenever we needed (Something I had been worrying about) I had originally planned to bring our own milk and store it in the fridge, but there was no need, they were happy to accommodate to our every need.
Also I had planned to clean the room and spray disinfectant, I had packed some ready for a little spray down of the room (due to Covid-19) It was our first trip away since the pandemic and I had been slightly worried, but genuinely it was so clean and spotless once I didn’t feel the need to at all.
Truly such an amazing experience throughout, we cannot wait to go back and visit, definitely the best hotel we’ve ever stayed at. We miss you Fingal!
My wife & I came to celebrate our 30th birthdays in Edinburgh after we’d had to cancel our original plans due to the pandemic. We couldn’t have chosen better - the hotel and rooms are exquisitely put together and decorated, the location is perfect for getting around, the food is delicious and the staff are extremely helpful (even helping us with cutlery etc. when we had food delivered due to COVID restrictions on restaurants). We wanted to treat ourselves to something a bit nicer and Fingal really delivered.
The *only*, very slight, complaint would be the almost constant sound of flushing toilets we experienced for some reason in the mornings. It’s a very loud airplane-style vacuum system and whether it was another room or something it didn’t allow for much peace from a certain time onwards.

Yes! The engine room is beautifully preserved behind perspex so you can't get IN but it's still fascinating. We wandered around the ship inside and out without any problems and very welcoming staff.
Sorry don’t know but the staff are so helpful I’m sure they will gladly tell you.
We went midweek and there was plenty of room. Not sure how it will be over a weekend. It has locked gates overnight. Also, as someone already said, the tramworks are a nightmare making it quite difficult to get to Fingal at the moment.
I don’t know. However if you phone or email them they respond very quickly.
"The tram to the Royal Mile is just a few steps away; as is a Hop-On Hop-Off stop near The Britannia."Read full review
