We picked this hotel for my wife's parents 65th Wedding Anniversary. The hotel pulled out all the stops to make sure this was truly a special weekend for them. We could not have picked a better venue for such an occasion. The food in both the restaurants was exceptional, as was the champagne and whisky. The attentiveness of the staff...

We did much research trying to find the best choice for our three day stay. We frequent luxury hotels such as the Ritz and Four Seasons and Living near the Waldorf Astoria in Chicago, a highly rated and luxurious hotel , we chose the Caledonian. Priced midpoint between the highly rated Balmoral and other mid priced. Hotels. The reviews which...

May have been a grand railway hotel once, but that was a long time ago. Rooms are small, though renovated - public areas are quite ordinary particularly in light of the Waldorf name. Concierges are helpful, though I don't like the practice of sending guests to the same restaurant which was sub standard.

I try not to get overly gushy about a hotel but,...wow. They learn your name, they learn your preference, they greet you when you come back. You don't have to be dressed to the nines to get respect from anyone. They want you to enjoy your stay and will go far out of their way to make sure that you...

Started off on The wrong foot with a small room with extremely loud utilities. Hotel moved us to a lovely new room without a second thought. The staff is unquestionably professional, especially, Rob and Willy (doormen) and Stewart (concierge). Only downside was breakfast, both days served cold. Perfect location.

Stayed here for one night. Room for as pleasant but quite small for nearly £200 a night including breakfast. Really disappointed that pool was not available just steam and sauna.... this should have been reflected in price! Bar nice good atmosphere. Tea and coffee in room but no milk!

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
