Stayed here for two nights during Xmas. The check in was quick, we left our luggage since we arrived around four hours too early. When we got back we were taken around by a butler who shoved us the dos and don'ts, quite nice touch. The room was huge, one living room and one bed room, bath tub as well....

A great review of the Howard but I don't think we would like to be considered too posh at the risk of being friendly - I would urge all our guests to treat us as a home from home, and relax as you would at home. Leon Kiteley General Manager

Although this hotel is not 5 star, it has plenty of old world charm and old fashioned service from the butler staff. On arrival if you have a car it is parked around the back for you, a butler will take you to your room where you will find your bags waiting. The rooms are comfortable, the bathroom was enormous...

My husband booked a three night stay here for my 40th birthday. Understandably, he saw the hotel's website and thought it looked great. I would have done so too. But as soon as we walked through the door, we knew we were in an establishment more akin to a two star guest house. The reception area is tired, worn out...

I am most disappointed to read that this guest has not enjoyed every aspect of their stay at The Howard which is most unusual as the vast majority of reviews on this and other sites will demonstrate. Perhaps The Howard is not to everyone's taste but rest assured we are most definitely 5 star as accredited by The AA and...

We spent a weekend in Edinburgh staying here and the service was the best that we have had in any hotel and all the staff were really friendly and helpful. The butler service for complimentary services for coffee, tea, drinks, ironing services was terrific. I would recommend to anyone

Have stayed at The Howard four times now and it's honestly one of the best hotels in Edinburgh. Friendly staff and good location. Very spacious bed rooms. Breakfast in the cosy front room is lovely. The butler service is unique to the hotel. We asked for a bath to be run which was ready after returning from a long day...

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and I left wishing we could stay forever. The hotel is in a wonderful old terrace in quiet street within easy walking distance of galleries, restaurants and shops. The area has some really interesting independent businesses. However our room, large but cosy, with a dressing room and huge bathroom was so comfortable...

My friend and I used an Itison voucher for afternoon tea with a butler. First problem - there was no butler. We had a couple of pleasant servers but neither was anything like a butler. The afternoon tea was fine, usual selection of sandwiches, scones, cakes etc and nice variety of teas but there was just something missing. There was...

Dear Joy, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your afternoon tea experience, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the tea, though any delay in service is clearly not ideal and I will follow this up with my team to ensure we improve our procedures in this area. We stayed in Garden Mews, as we are a family of 5, and it provided more than enough space. Although it was very expensive (not sure I could do it again), it was a charming hotel that fit all our needs. We never ate at the hotel. It takes about 10-15 min walk to get to all the central shopping...

This review needs to be read in conjunction with my review from March last year. A programme of refurbishment is being undertaken by the new owners which, in our view, is being done very tastefully. Most immediately noticeable is the alteration to the drawing room which now incorporates a proper bar. This has been done most sympathetically and does not...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
