I enjoyed my stay at the Castle Rock Hostel a lot. The location is perfect and the staff is super friendly and helpful. The rooms are really big and comfortable. I stayed in a 12 bed mixed dorm room and it was good and never too loud. The common room areas in the hostel are perfect and it is ideal...

My friends and I really enjoyed this big and superb youth hostel. It is designed to satisfy young clients. The staff is really friendly, the dining hall is amazing. Make sure you choose a room for 3 or 4 people so that other people don't get in your way, and with a view of this beautiful city.

It is located in the heart of the city and right next to the castle. Visited during the fringe festival and this hostel provided the best stay ever. Loved the group events especially the pub crawl night! Staff was very friendly as well. I have really no complaints at all, this is exactly what a hostel should be like.

We stayed at a 12 beds room. It was huge. Everything was clean. Breakfast for 1.50 including bread with jam or nutella, a piece of fruit, cereals with milk and a glass of juice. You can always have coffee and tea for free. Nice common areas. Nice decorations everywhere, and nice music everywhere you go! Even at the toilets!! We...

This hostel is excellently located in the heart of Edinburgh. We checked in around 0000 and entered our door of around 12-16 people. It was loud but to be expected. The beds were relatively hard - I prefer soft beds but that's purely personal preference. The hostel is also well priced, I paid £12 for one night. It was warm...

I LOVED the Rock! It was my first hostel stay and once you go hostel-ing, you never go back. I'm a huge germ-a-phobe so was a little scared before I got there but it was clean and the bathrooms were amazing. For my first trip to Edinburgh, location was the best ever as Edinburgh Castle was my neighbor. Great to...

This hostel was really truly great. Located right by the castle and close to everything. Showers and facilities were clean and the dorms were big. Breakfast was cheap and the common room and the kitchen were large and had everything you needed + free coffee/tea and chocolate whenever! Staff was very friendly as well. I have really no complaints at...

One of the best hostels I have been staying at. The location is awesome, just 3 minutes walk from the stunning castle, right in the city centre and the old town and at walking distance to almost everything. The staff was super friendly and helpful and made me feel totally welcome right from the beginning. The building itself is beautiful,...

I stayed 4 nights at Castle Rock Hostel (end of November 2016) and the stay was very pleasant. - Staff: the staff was helpful and 24/7 available at the reception. - Rooms: the bedrooms bathroom were very clean and the common room/breakfast room was very comfy and nicely decorated. Each room could be locked and each guest had access to...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
