The location of the hostel is perfect, the staff is really friendly, always willing to help you, the kitchen is well-supplied and the common room is really nice. Also a lot of activities for (mostly young) travelers.

Stayed at Castle Rock for 5 nights when I visited Edinburgh, and was not disappointed. I arrived in the city early so couldn't check in but was able to leave my bags which was great! The Staff are super friendly & incredibly helpful (and mostly Australian), so they can help you plan your time in Edinburgh with whatever you want...

Stunning hostel to stay in, stayed here for a night in December and was very pleased, staff are very welcoming and beds were very comfortable, also at £14 a night it is unbeatable value! only a minutes walk from Edinburgh castle and 10 minutes to the main princes street.

I'm really excited to be coming back to Edinburgh for the Tattoo. I couldn't happier to plan to stay at Castle Rock. The location is brilliant. The Dorms are warm and comfy. Showers are hot, very important, and very clean. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. The organised events are fun and the management are very generous. My first...

Staying in Castle Rock was amazing. Everything was excellent. Every single staff member was kind, helpful and fun to be around. They went to extra mile to make sure you were having the best time. The Hostel was clean and you felt and home there. The breakfast that they serve was really nice and the complimentary coffee, hot chocolate or...

A few friends and I stayed in the Castle Rock Hostel last May and had a lovely stay and experience. The hostel was in a great location and the staff were both friendly and helpful. It was also a safe place to stay with a door man on the entrance all the time where you had to show proof of...

I spent 2 nights here and I know that I should be back soon and stay longer! The property is a big one, with spacious common kitchen and dining room. It has a pool table as well! For those who fancy watching movies while socialising with new friends, it has movie room too. It offers different activities each night, so...

I was really really impressed by this hostel. It took me forever to first find it because I'm terrible at navigation and I had to go to numerous souvenir shops to ask for help. But despite that, the location is actually really really good. Before you walk in, you get a gorgeous view of Edinburgh Castle. Inside, its super retro...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
