The hostel is very well located, just few steps to the many attractions, like Edinburgh Castle, GrassMarket, Royal Mile, etc. The reception area is quite small, the staff are OK, nothing that could stand out though. There are many areas for social meetings, a huge room with pool table, games, large table for meals. Other room with sofas and books,...

This hostel is in a perfect location, and has lots of nice communal spaces where you can get to know other travellers from around the world. The dorms had lots of beds, but were in very large rooms with high ceilings so it didn't feel cramped. Would definitely stay again.

I've spent two nights in this hostel. The bed was clean, the atmosphere of the hostel was cosy, the building is fun to explore, and the facilities were clean and of course having Edinburgh Castle on the doorstep is a good bonus. A special mention goes to the night porter who is cheerful and friendly even in the wee hours...

Perfect location, less than 100mts from royal mile and from the Castle. Spent there 3 nkghts in a 4-mixed room. Rooms, although a bit small, were cleaned, with free lockers, and each bed has his own outlet and reading light. Not too many bathrooms and showers for the many rooms they have in each floor. Breakfast just for 1.5£.m (not...

Castle Rock Hostel is located in the heart of Edinburgh and within walking distance of all attractions. The hostel has all amenities that you would want when traveling. However, a lot of the people that stayed while I was there were very immature and loud. I was awoken many times by loud, ignorant people who had too much to drink...

We're really sorry to hear you had this experience. Unfortunately we can't control other people's behavior but we certainly do as much as we can to make sure everyone has a pleasant stay. Of course if we're made aware of such inappropriate behavior we will take care of things accordingly but we weren't made aware of this happening in the...

I had the best experience staying here for New Years. Hands down, the best hostel in Edinburgh. I stayed in a 8 dorm bed room with a fantastic view of the castle out one of the windows. The staff were all fun and friendly. The common areas were a great place to hang out. The only policy I disliked was...

Castle Rock provides directions from the Edinburgh airport on their website so it was incredibly easy to navigate to and from the airport to the hostel. Their directions were easy and we had no trouble finding the hostel itself. To our amazement, the hostel is located practically on the Royal Mile where sites such as Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral,...

one of the best hostel I went to. Perfect location, beautiful area, just under the castle. Friendly staff, they give us some good advise. Good facilities and really clean. We were in a 12 beds dorm. It was really comfortable and there is free locker as well. And what a beautiful building.

I had a lovely stay at the hostel which has a great location near the castle. We did a fieldtrip to Edinburgh and most of our trips were at walking distance of hostel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They also allow visitors to join you in the common rooms. They have such a lovely common room. They offer...

This is the third Hostel I stayed at during my 3 week trip in Europe. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night. But the impression leads me to this conclusion; this hostel is one of the best I have ever experienced. Room = This room was a 10+ person room. However, the SPACE was absolutely the best I have ever seen....

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
